Pennies have been made from zinc for decades now. And believe it or not, any time someone in DC discusses dropping the penny from circulation the zinc lobbyists show up to derail it. Zinc is still mined a great deal in Arizona. Australia has gotten rid of pennies. But cents still exist. They use a 'virtual' penny. That is, when you charge things, it is still charged to the penny.
