Most Unbreakable Sports Records (Edited 01/06/08 01:31PM by Seth)
There are many records, and many will be broken, as we saw last year with Bonds broke one of the greatest of them all. Which do you think is the most impressive record, as well as the one that will probably never be broken?

I think that there is a slight chance someone could get that.

No one will ever, ever, ever, hit more than 4,256 hits in a career.  Players just don't have the endurance to play that long anymore.  The only reason that record isn't celebrated more is because of the trouble Pete Rose got himself into.

1. John Wooden's 88 straight wins as UCLA's head coach  2. Wilt Chamberlain's 100-point night

I like Formula 1, but it wasn't easy to pick that one.  Yes there are less than 20 races, and yes it can seem like a parade sometimes, but when your car stalls, or gets stuck, you dont get pushed back to the garage to regroup, you are out.  all very good options of course.

#1. This is impressive because you lose a large percentage of starters each year to graduation.  88 wins in a row is crazy!

#2. Players just don't play everyday anymore.  I didn't vote this as most impressive because I think there were days he probably played hurt or worn down and it hurt his team.

I agree . Amd look at the list though .  You can bet that there were no drugs used for any of them . Unlike the primadonas of today

I didn't forget that one either. I only put the 8 on the list. You may be right though? That will be a record that will be very difficult to break.

100 points I mean come on.

I would have liked to see how close second place was with the records.

+1 thumbs upwell, kobe put up 81 last year so i think he has a chance to drop 100. he is young 2 so he still has more years on him what about brett favre's consecutive starts for a quarterback? or are these non-active?

+1 thumbs upCouldn't disagree more.  That has got to be the most overrated record in MLB.

A player could have a 160 game hitting streak and still only bat .250.

It WILL happen eventually.  Guaranteed.

This is really hard to me.  So many great achievements.  Someone needed to show some love, Gretzky's 215 is an awful lot of goals.  And Ty Cobb's career avg is just sick.  W/ pitchers as talented as they r now, I can't see anyone coming near that for a career.

DiMaggio's streak is another great one, but I think it can be broken.  And the athlete who does it will be the one who has a shot a Pete Rose's and Ty Cobb's record.

I don't think it's overrated. He's the only player in over 120 years of baseball to even get to FIFTY straight. Pitching is way too good now. They have specialist pitchers that they bring in now just to pitch to certain hitters. When was the last time anyone even got to 40? A part of me wants to see somebody break it, but I think it's gonna be a loooong time.

+1 thumbs upNot to belittle the accomplishment.  But there are plenty of other records in baseball that I promise will NEVER get broken.   Cobb's lifetime batting average will stand forever.  No way anyone will beat that.  And I don't thing anyone will get 191 rbi in a season nor will any pitcher win 43 games.  Pitchers don't even make 43 STARTS in a season anymore.  Cy Young's wins and losses will stand forever.

There are even records that I think CAN be broken, but it is more likely that a player will hit in 57 straight games than do them.  Like pitch 3 no hitters back to back to back.
The closest anyone has come to that was two one hitters where the one hit came in the 8th or 9th inning both times.
I'm more impressed with Walt Dropo's 12 consecutive hits.  (it is 12, isn't it?)
I'd really like to see the DiMaggio hitting streak get broken just because I sort of get tired of hearing about it whenever a player gets over 30.

Jerry Rice's receiving yards will be broken one day.  I don't know who will break it, but it will be surpassed, just like when Emmitt broke Walter Payton's rushing record.

Schumacher's 7 championships is probably THE most overrated accomplishment on this list, considering as long as he starts in the top 5 he'll finish there unless he blows up or crashes out.  F1 is follow-the-leader for the entire race.  We all know Earnhardt & Petty both have 7 championships in a division of auto racing that is a heck of a lot more competitive...right?

Ty Cobb's batting average...this is just unbelieveable.  I really can't see ANYONE ever coming close to this record, maybe some guys in the .330-something range, but I can't see any higher than that.

Nolan Ryan's 7 no-nos will be hard to break, but it can be done.

Wayne Gretzky's 215 point season was one hell of an accomplishment, but with some of the explosive players in the NHL today, it will be hard to crack but I believe one day it will be knocked off.

As someone pointed out, Kobe scored 81 points in a game last year.  If anyone is going to get over 100, he's the man who will eclipse Chamberlain.

The NCAA is very competitive these days, but this could easily happen with a team like the Tarheels of this season.  Not that I'm not stating they will be the ones to do it, but they are the type of team that would have the best chance to do so.

Ripken's consecutive game streak can be broken providing one player stays healthy his entire career.  I'm sure there are many guys who have tried, but the closest was Craig Biggio who had somewhere in the neighborhood of 600 consecutive games, but ended his streak a few years back when he was on-deck to pinch hit in the 9th inning and the batter before him was the 3rd out.
