NHL 2008/2009 Schedule Released, New Format Integrated
Read the Article: NHL 2008/2009 Schedule Released, New Format Integrated

The NHL released its schedule today completely re-formatted to give way to more inter-conference games. Now, teams will play 24 games in division (six vs. each team), 40 games intra-conference (four vs. each), 15 games vs each inter-conference foe PLUS an extra three games vs. a chosen inter-conference foe. A supposed "wild-card" team.
So Red Wing and Penguin fans will get to see their teams battle again EACH at home once. I think the other two wild cards for the Red Wings are the Islanders and Sabres??? maybe...help me out

Whats wrong with a home and home with the opposite conference. (30 games) Then 52 games against the other 14 in your teams conference? The NHL can screw up anything given the chance. I am not thrilled with playing Philly and Atlanta twice. But I like what TB has done so it would be nice to play them twice.

+2 thumbs up I think the schedule should be more balanced. It's ridiculous to be playing your divisional rivals so many times. I think exposure to all Arenas for all teams more than once helps fans get to see more players, more of the superstars. Spread it out and let fans all over the country see all these great NHL Teams and Players. I still also think The Blackhawks are going to surprise people this year, and The Sharks are finally going to rise to the top.

+1 thumbs upI like that I get to see Ovechkin this year.

I agree with Madison, it is very tiring watching the same teams play against your fav team.  I don't think Chicago will surprise anyone----hockey fans already know they will be good (or should). Also, I don't think the addition of Blake and Boyle will be enough for the Sharks to get over their play off hump.

Speaking of Boo Birds---------Dear Rob Blake------Better get ready for the Kings home opener on Oct. 12th and prepare to be booed heavily (not by me).

Well, I just looked at the Kings schedule and it seems that Barry "The Mullet" Melrose and his team will be making a visit to Staples in January. I am a little curious to see where these two last place teams are in the standings at this time. Go Kings!!

+1 thumbs upI noticed that the Kings had several Monday night home games this season, and many are during football season---great way to promote the game.

By the way I noticed that your team will be starting out the season in Europe. GOOD LUCK on that one! History has shown to be less than kind to teams starting the season out like this. (Both the Kings and Ducks had horrible starts, as did Vancouver when they played in Japan years ago.)

You know, I was thinking the same thing BUT, (I can't believe it!) they have 6 days off before their next game and that game is the beginning of a five game homestand that keeps them in Tampa for two weeks, so..... That's shocking that the NHL got it right. No excuses.

+1 thumbs upI like the fact that Detroit is playing at least one game against every team in the league this upcoming season. Having said that, I really wish that two of the three inter-conference teams they were playing were different. Pittsburgh is the one I'm happy with. Obviously with Hossa playing for Detroit this coming season, it's going to be a lot of fun watching the rivalry unfold, along with the fact that Pittsburgh is a worthy opponent (...at least they were last season, we'll see how they fare this year without Malone, Roberts and their boy Hossa. ...I'm sure they'll do fine).
The other two Eastern Conf. teams they're playing twice are Atlanta and Buffalo.
Not BAD teams I'd say, however I think it would be a much more fun game to watch (read: better ratings, Mr. Bettman... can't understand why he wouldn't figure THAT one out for himself...) and a better game competitively, if they played a Canadian team, or a couple of Original Six teams.
But... as I always say... What the hell do I know?
I'm just a hockey fan.
I don't run things.
Do what you do, Bettman...

Arent the King fans tired of booing him yet? First they booed him when he was traded to Colorado. LA could have resigned him. Man Kings fans are getting so lame and tired

I also like the idea of playing every team at least once.  Don't worry, the Pens will win their division once again and are sure to be the EC favorites.

5 million was too much for Blake. Many will boo him because he refused to let go of his NCT because he wanted to retire a King--------and then signed with a division rival. Not all Kings fans (me) will be booing. You should not be generalizing all of us. I believe as a ticket buying fan you have the right to boo anyone you want. I am sure that when Bertuzzi visits Colorado there will be plenty of "Boos".

+2 thumbs upThe Sharks certainly have no excuses this year. Can't afford to have another off year from Cheechoo and Marleau. Sometimes you get the feeling the inmates run the asylum in San Jose. Wonder if McLellen will be able to do the job.

Oh I agree. I did not mean to lump you into the same pot as the King fans who do boo. But its getting tired. I dont rmemebr LA booing the Great when he asked for a trade and was sent to St Louis. Bertuzzi IMO is a whole different beast than Blakey. When Blake comes back to Colorado the fans give a warm reception. He could have stayed in Colorado but got more $$ to go back to LA. I remember Forsberg going to Philly then when he was traded to Nashville and came back to Denver was not booed. Booing one is one thing for poor play or something on the ice. But because a player is traded or goes somewhere esls for more monsy is kind childish on the fans part. IMO

I definetely like this new (actually old) schedule better, each team should definetely see each other at least once. Plus by removing 2 divisional games, each game is more intense because the rivalries don't get worn down as much

Rangers wild cards: Stars, Ducks, Blackhawks

I like those 3...get to see Avery twice, a goony team twice, and a young, explosive team twice.

I think that the booing of Blake this time will be based on leaving for more money despite stating he wanted to retire a King and thus refused to let go of his NTC and the shabby play he showed us fans the last two years at 12 million.

It's better than it was.  That's for bloody sure.

It is about as good the schedule can get while having 3 divisions in 2 conferences.

I still like the idea of 3 Conferences of 10 teams each.  (West, NE, and SE)
4 games against the other 9 Conference teams.  And 2 against the other 30.  That makes for 76 games.  And make the playoffs league wide.

No, it won't happen.  But I think it better than always going East v West in the finals.
