+3 thumbs upStupid idea. Who cares about the 8th inning if you don't have guys who can even get you there?

What I would do, since there innings limits on the Big 3, is have Moose spot start for each of them at various times throughout the season (depending on what each players' innings limits are... it varies for each of them). That way they will all be fresh come the end of the season when they are needed most. (This is of course assuming that the Yanks stay healthy and are in the pennant race.)

BTW, can you post a link to an article where the Yankees have officially announced this? I'm not seeing this announcement in any of my Yankee blog feeds or on their website.

I think its a mistake.  The lure of him as a dominant reliver is too great for the yankees.  If he starts there I think he will stay there because he cannot be replaced there.

+2 thumbs upIf this is true he will be in the bullpen all season.  I would much rather see him as a starter because I think he has the stuff and the mental makeup to be a dominant #1 guy.  Can't deny his ability out of the pen, but I think he has more value for the Yanks as a starter.

I agree. The Yanks have lacked in both the rotation and bullpen, but IMO more innings is more valueable than more games!

I don't follow the AL East much, mostly because I despise it, but from a lot of what I've read on Chamberlin a lot of "experts" seem to think he doesn't have enough stuff to be a dominant starter but has enough to be a dominant closer.  If thats the case, then the Yankees made the right choice.

IMO theres only one true way to find out if he has the stuff, and that is to take the baby leesh off and let him Start!

I think this is the best move to make with a young arm like Joba. He has yet to throw alot of innings and why not take time with such a talent and ease him in , why rush when you dont have to.  The yanks have some old arms and atleast one long term injury is almost a given , so Joba will surely have his chance to move up. Good idea not to expect him to be able to throw 200 innings and moving into the rotation late could be perfect , he may hit his stride at the best time for the yanks in second half and stretch run instead of hitting the innings wall at that time which alot of rookie arms do. The reasoning for a pen start is all about workload and i think the yanks definately see him as a long term starter.  Just no need to push for more and more when ya simply dont have to thats how so many arms with potential have been ruined.

+1 thumbs upI wonder how many of those "experts" have actually seen him pitch in the minors. When Joba was coming out the 'pen in the majors, he only used two pitches. He has four in is repertoire. As of last season, three were major league ready. I am sure this season, all four will be refined. I can understand putting him in the 'pen for the first couple months b/c of innings limits, but damn, they better move him into the rotation at some point this season. I have a good feeling about him as a starter.

+1 thumbs upI think the only way Joba stays in the bullpen all year is out of necessity.  If neither Farnsworth nor Hawkins ( or any of the other young guys for that matter ) can handle the 7th and 8th innings they will have no choice but to keep him in the 'pen.  I have very little confidence in either one of those guys, frankly. But I agree with Clare- the guy has the potential to be the stud # 1 they need and he has to start eventually.

One of the smarter moves the Yanks have made in awhile. If they are really smart, he will remain there forever.

If I'm wrong we're in for some dark times. There is NO reason to put this guy in the rotation.
