+1 thumbs up

I could not say "thanks" enough to my Pops, not only for sports, but everything. Same for my mom.

As for coaches I had one that was such and ass that I almost stopped playing Little League. Look I knew early on that I was not a 5 tool player, a tool, but not a 5 tool player. And this coach made me feel like my being there was a complete waste of time and our teams poor play was keeping him from getting that Mangers job in the bigs. He was a younger guy along with the rest of his staff. It was more about winning for them than it was about winning and becoming better players. So I hope he has a lifetime of bad soup.

+2 thumbs up I playd the sports I wanted too like Tennis, Water Polo, Baseball, anything my brothers were playing as well. I think watching Pride Of The Yankees introduced me to the life of Lou Gehrig and that was an inspiration to me as an athlete and a Human Being.

#1 - I am a wordsmith and I really pride myself on being able to put an answer together; that said, there isn't enough space or time to tell you the depth of energy, effort and time that my father spent with me on the field of play.  He died when I was 13 and my world spun out of control...

#2 - At the age of 59 I am able to say with surity that I saw NO coaches in youth sport in my era that were so ego involved that they harmed kids.  Now, in my 30 years of coaching kids I can tell you that I've run into coaches that I've invited to stay at the ballpark well after the game so the kids would be gone that I might give them an attitude adjustment or convince them that they are not youth coaching material(at least once they get up).

My parents were divorced when I was 2. My Mom was my Dad; taught me how to catch a baseball, took me fishing, and to baseball and football practices/games. My Dad never even came to my games. Oh well.

My parents didn't have to force me, or put pressure on me to play sports, and they never would have. I fell in love with basketball, football, basketball, and hockey before I was 5.

Watching Larry Bird was like a poet creating a poem.  My cousin invited me to shoot out.  Was impressed with my bro's game.  Then I got addicted to basketball and the rest is history (from playing to collecting memorabilia and videos).

My parents have supported me 100% from the first day i started playing sports so that has helped with my love of the game. I have only had 2 coaches that almost made me quit sports all together and if my parents wouldn't have been there i wouldn't have played for as long as i did so I'm glad they were there for me . coaches def do effect children's decisions in life.

I chose other for answer #1 because there were more than one.My dad had a huge influence on me.He didn't push me to play but we were always at games. He instilled in me that I may not always be the best on the field, but I was always supposed to give my best.My dad died when I was in the 10th grade and his memory made me always strive to be the best. Then, after my dad died there were 3 high school coaches who meant the world to me.They taught me more about life. They weren't just coaches, they were friends.I owe them so much.

I owe all my sports knowledge to my Father: My Mother and Father split up when I was 4 or 5, and whenever I went to visit my Father, he was always more often than not, watching sports.

*He's the reason I became a diehard Bruins and Red Sox Fan. He's the reason I watched the Celtics in the eary 80's during the Larry Bird era despite my hatred for the sport.

*He's the one who introduced me to the Patriots, indirectly. He was in the hospital the weekend the Pats were demolished by the Bears in 1985. He never saw the game (despite having a bet on them), but I did, in the dark, worried more about my Father whether he would live or not.

*When I started playing little league baseball, My Mother went out and bought both my Brother and I baseball gloves. She made a mistake though.....I'm left handed, and she bought me a right handed glove. I played second base the first 5 games of the year by catching the ball, removing the glove, then throwing to first base. That changed once my Father found out and then bought me a left handed glove.

Bottom line is, I loved my Father and became fans of the teams he was and to this day still am. My Father died in 1996 when he was 48 from throat cancer. A lifetime of Bacardi & Cokes, and Pall Mall cigarettes did him in. He never saw the Patriots or the Red Sox win the Championships they have. Each time a Boston team wins.....the first thing I think of is my Father never got the joy of seeing it.
