Pirates sweep Astros, your take
News: (YahooSports) The Buccos turn the yellow rose of Texas black & blue.

The Pittsburgh Pirates completed a 3-game sweep of the Houston Astros to start off the 2007 season.  Prior to tonight, they hadn't swept the Astros in Houston since 1991.  They won each game by 1 run, the bullpen did its job, and the starting pitching was outstanding for the most part, although Tom Gorzelanny wasn't exactly lights out.  Now I know people have been very critical of the Pirates, so I want to know everyone's opinion on this series.  What does this show you about the battling Buccos?  Was it a fluke, or is this team showing that they're for real?

I definitely believe the Pirates are for real.  This was more than just a fluke series, when you're able to beat a team like Houston 3 in a row, you're definitely making a statement.

It's definitely a sign of things to come, however, I don't think they make the playoffs this year. I do think, though, they will finish above .500 for the first time since 1993. Last year's finish, the players being more relaxed and having fun, and the addition of some key players will have the Bucs having their best season in many, many years.

Also, I've been to about 30 pirates games in my life and they have never lost while I've been in attendance. I'm going to a few games this year, probably more than I have in any other year because I'm excited about this season and I hope that we continue the winning streak while I'm at the park. I wish I could get there more often.

I won't ignore the fact that all people responging so far are Pirate fans, including myself. But, I do think that, compared to last year, this team is showing a LOT more promise. I personally feel that they can take on the big boys now.

Who cares if they're all Pirates fans, I'd be the first to admit if I thought this series was a complete fluke.  I think we can all agree we'll be honest after the past 14 years have brought nothing but ridicule for being a Pirates fan.

That's true... we've been pushed down so low that we should actually be VERY pessimistic... the fact that we show optimism is very telling. WE ACTUALLY REALLY THINK WE HAVE A CHANCE!!

I don't know, but it cost me a lot of FanIQ points.  Not that I think the Pirates are bad, but game 1 I figured it was opening day in Houston, so I gave them the benefit of the doubt.  Game 2, I thought they wouldn't lose 2 in a row to start the season at home.  Then, of course, I thought they wouldn't get swept at home to start the season.  I didn't go with baseball sense, I went with what I thought was logic.

Moral of the story, stay away from logic.

The NL Central is a mediocre division, and anyone can beat up on anyone on any given day!  This is very sad for me to say being a true Cardinals fan!

Most likely it's a fluke.  Historically, we have to wait until Memorial Day to see who's for real and who isn't.  However, if the Pirates can keep it up, we'll have to pay attention to them.

At present I have to say it is a bit of a fluke.  I really want the Buccos to do well but a 3 game sweep of a very mediocre Astros team will not convince me that the Pirates will challenge for a top spot in the division.

we'll have to see how they look at home against the cardinals
