Well First, The league must have allowed girls so "guys" shut up!

Second, girls should be allowed to play in leagues up to the age of 12/13 with no problem.  After that there tends to be a real physical issue as well as a competitive issue that seperates the vast percentage of men and women in a contact sport - and basketball is a contact sport.  Yes, there are often women in age groups that can play with and at higher levels than men BUT, you can't write rules for the outliers you have to write the rules for the mainstream and hence after age 13 young ladies need to playe in ladies leagues!

+6 thumbs upIf a girl has worked at any game to the point that the guys are complaining good for her.  She has evidently worked hard at it.  Actually it is good for the guys to be put in their place like this. Sometime we become complacent as guys and don't work as hard as we ought.  This young lady is a wake up call for some.  Instead of complaining  work harder.

+6 thumbs upEspecially for the reasons it seems that are stated. Little Johnny is bieng shown up and either lil Johnny or lil Johnny's parents are losing sleep over it. I don't care if it is a girl or boy when I pasyed the better ones were chosen and that is the way it was played. And I was not usually one of the better ones. If this were not a league and was a pick up game there would be a lot of boy's wanting her on which ever side they were on.

The Video Reports and News Persons say they changed the rule because other parents were complaining that she was doing better than their sons and the league didn't want them to quit. What is she going to do to the girls league? They say scores are going down at 91-12, are they going to limit the ammount of time she can spend on the court? Tell her she can only get so many points and rebounds before she has to sit down? It is a specialized training facility called  The HOOP in Beavrton Oregon... What kind of specialized training is she getting? Let's just say I am glad Major League Baseball never told Jackie Robinson he had to play in the Negro Leagues because the white owners were complaining about him!

Just to rectify as well, According to all reports, It's not the boys that are complaining.... It's their Parents. Each Boys team only had to face her team 2 times a season, it's the parents around the league complaining about her.

I gotcha on the point and it is well taken. Is it possible the "boys" went home and said something to the parents? Being a parent, I can picture a scary scenario where things snowballed. Since none of us were actually there and everyone knows the news media is always 100% correct and unbiased, well...

I just found the concept of the story fascinating and thought it was worthy of sharing with all my good friends on the Q!

+2 thumbs upOne thing I haven't read is where the boy's are passing a petition for each team to sign saying let her play. I was rebel enough at that young age to take that adventure when I saw an injustice. At least until it got shot down.

Hell no. Thats one of the dumbest things i've heard. If she can play she can play let her. The only thing I wonder is why she isn't in a girls league because then there would be no contreversy in my mind here. But nevertheless they should not ban her because she can play.

No one is going to tell Alexander Ovetchkin he can't play because he score more goals than everyone else this year.

No one is going to stop Layla Ali from boxing because the others can consistently compete with her.

Well i'm sure you get the point by now. If this is the only way she can play then they have no right to deny her a spot in the league.

I played in a Boys floor hockey league up until the age of 12.  There was NO girl's floor hockey league, nor ice skating league, but the ice hockey had a rule banning girls, the floor hockey didn't.  I started playing hockey at age 4 and it was natural for me to want to play! Heck, my dad built a rink in our back yard every winter so I COULD play!  I had my hair chopped short so I could blend in, but by 12 the hair didn't make any difference, and it was my own cousin who "outed" me when we played against his team.

My point is, I understand this girl's will to play and play well.  Unfortunately, I also understand if she has reached "that age" and the boys have as well, they don't play against her the same way.  I hope they find a way around it, because if she really IS that good, she deserves to play and the team deserves to have the BEST players available to them, regardless of sex, color, or size! (Can you imagine if she was only 5'1" and 8 years old and able to play like that?) In my opinion, the parents need to "grow up".

+4 thumbs upI hope they can come to a conclusion where she can play(at least until she gets to high school!) It's sad when the egos of parents get in the way, and it's forgotten that it's supposed to be about the kids playing them!!

Growing up in the 1960's, girls sports were not promoted, encouraged, or even funded in school or outside school.  Girls were allowed to participate in P. E. sports, but not competition (for those of you who were born after 1975, Physical Education--it was required!)

If any child, female or male, can play--Let them play. It is time we stopped sticking our heads in the sand and trying to make school a "user friendly" place to be. What happened to hard work, studying, sportsmanship, competition, excellence in our schools? Now you aim at nothing, and that is precisely what you hit: NOTHING.

+1 thumbs upNot to be sexist, but honestly, boys and girls a physically equal in sports in the pre-pubescent stage. However, after the "fuzz" hits then there is a big separation. Therefore, I say let her play with the boys, but don't expect her to maintain that outcome to her level of play when they get a few more years older.

Would we be having this conversation if there was a boy who was 'too good' and not allowed to play ??

The simple fact of the matter is this - if she (or anyone) is allowed into the league, then there can be no rules to single her (or anyone) out for exclusion.     Period.

We're having this conversation because (trying not to sound rude) we can. It's not about any "rules", it is simply that it happened and it is controversial. We are having this conversation precisely because she IS a 12 year old GIRL.

Besides, it's a more intelligent poll than "I hate Veronica, are you on my side?"

+3 thumbs upIt's very possible that if girls had not been pushed into the kitchen for so long we could have had this conversation many years ago. If a 12 yo boy were to win the Betty Crocker Cookoff he would be destined  by the world  to be a master chef.  This  girl is of course,  is  destined to be a trouble maker.  What a world we live in!

it is just cuz it hurts a mans feelings when they get beat by a girl...i say let her play and send the loser boys home..cuz i would play harder(fair still) but harder to win
