Should all Professional sports teams be a community owned organization (like The Green Bay Packers)
Sports teams are owned by individuals who can do what they want with the team, ie. move them or sell them...do you think these teams should be owned by the community that they play in(like the Green Bay Packers) with final decisions made by a group of shareholders and not a individual owner?

+10 thumbs upAllow the "tiny" city of Green Bay to be the only team in the NFL to be owned by the city.  It has proven effective.  Unlike the last answer, many fail to realize that the Green Bay Packers have won more NFL championships than any other team.  Replace them championships with Super Bowls and there is no denying the fact that being publicly owned is not only a safeguard to prevent a middle-of-the-night move, but puts Green Bay a cut above the rest of the league!

Sure.  It'll never happen, but it'd be nice.

That would be a lovely thing to spend my tax money on...or maybe they could just not tax me and let Mr. Billionaire pay for it if he wants/thinks he can make money (which he will).

Why should all teams be publiclly owned? The Packers have been that way since inception. The rest of the teams have been held by a single owner. I remember when the Nuggets were like that, they could not compete for more than division championships, plus when they were in ABA they could not even play in a big time stadium. Plus with how sports is now a public owned team would need shareholds with cash. I am not surprised the Packers went from 1967-1996 without a Super Bowl appearance because of that.

+5 thumbs upSo you think being a publicly owned team is why Green Bay didn't appear in a Super Bowl in the 70's and 80's....I thought other teams had dynasties back then....Steelers, Cowboys, 49er's, undefeated Dolphins, and Redskins!  There are many teams that have never played in a Super Bowl, so I need to blame that on being privately owned!

Yes they have the most NFL titles, HOWEVER the majroty of those were before 1940. Being a public owned team has put them at a disadvantage. They are no the only "tiny" city. Green bay use to play half of their home game in Milwaukee. So in effect they were a state team. So dont tell me being publicly owned has not hurt them. If it didnt they would not have had to split their home games. (That stopped in 1993.) Not until the CBA was changed from the 1987 strike were the Packers even in competition for big name F/A's.  Plus there are only 6 teams to never appear in a Super Bowl. (2 are expansion teams from 1995 adn 2002)

+1 thumbs upI think it would be awesome if a "community" could invest (buy stock) in their hometown team to the point of owning them. But it shouldn't be forced upon the "community" either to do so.
