Should we legalize Marijuana? (Edited 07/05/08 03:17PM by sports_schmorts)

By my understanding, the country has many people in Prison for smoking Mary-Jane. I find that very strange. Alcohol is way more dangerous, but yet it is socially acceptable.

I myself do not do either, but know people who do both. And I would rather be around them a little high than drunk.

Besides, growing in it supervised Federal fields would do many things. Stop drug importers from shipping it. Cut down on drug dealers. And pay less taxes to keep Potheads out of jail. Then the Government could tax the crap out of it and our Social Security might just be saved.

There is little to no overhead. It is a WEED. It grows from the earth. It would not cost them much to produce it.

What needs to be regulated are our own pharmaceutical companies. My mother smoked pot her entire life. But her life was taken from her because her Doctors had her on so many different meds. The whole Anna Nicole story. But more tragic to me because it took my OWN mother at the age of 57.

For people who are skeptical, I suggest watching 'Super High Me'.

It opened my eyes and I don't even smoke it.....

Legalize it, regulate it, and tax it.  There is no reason it shouldn't be treated just like alcohol.  Stop with the victimless crimes!

You make some great points.  Sorry about your mom too, I see that with mine.  Not the pot smoking, but the meds they have her on is insane.

I will be around about 100 and some drunks tonight (and I say that with love, most of them are family).  But as always when it is time to come home after this big party we have every year, some drunk older man will not let go of my hand, my brother in-law will try to drench me in homemade shine, and hubby will get hurt.  I'll have a few drinks before fireworks and stop about 3 hours before I help let them off.  A floating dock and drinkin don't mix well.  Now get them stoned and the fireworks may go off slower, but I wouldn't be ready to kill loved ones when I leave tonight.   ; )

Pot should have been legal years ago.  I have written a few papers on the subject always with great reviews.  I however, do not smoke it, but know  aton of people who do.  I also know a lot of people that would be mad if it were legal!  They wouldn't be able to sell it for as high as they do now!

This subject has been discussed for years and probably will be for years to come.  I do not smoke pot currently or do any other drugs for that matter.  But I have smoked pot a few times in the past... for me, just made me tired but I know it has different effects on a lot of people.

I do think they should legalize it for a few reasons.

1) Put an age limit on it (yes, I know underage kids are smoking cigarettes and getting alcohol still),

2) TAX it heavily for recreational use which I would hope might eleviate taxing on some other things and

3) Control the production & sales of it... meaning it should be produced by licensed companies with regulations to sell to the public.... if someone wants to grow it for personal use, then it should not be sold to anyone else... it should be used only for themselves.   Additionally, if someone does grow it for personal use, it needs to be regulated on "how much" they can grow... obviously if they have an acre of it, it is for more than just personal use.   i guess what i'm saying is if someone wants to grow it and sell it to others, they should require a license like any other business and pay taxes like any other business.

+1 thumbs upMaybe not legalize it...but decriminalize it.  Just like most other things, this should be a states' rights issue...or even more local government...or individual business (like...if you're going to work for me you cannot do that...kind of thing).

+5 thumbs upI am sorry, but regardless for all those whom think it is not as dangerous as alcohol, I have to argue. Being a fire fighter, I can tell you regardless of Alcohol or that Ganja stuff, they are both EQUALLY dangerous regardless.

Everyone claims that it is not as bad, seeing it first hand, I can assure you it is. They say that being HIGH as you call it, makes you more alert and cautious because you are paranoid, well it causes just as many problems if not more.

Just so everyone understands thats my opinion, if you dont like it, or think I am wrong, please feel free to take a hit and throw me a PQ.............

+1 thumbs upSorry, but can't agree. I had a good friend who was a DEA Agent and learned all about the Drug Trade, and Pot is also linked to using more powerful drugs as well. You legalize it and kids will get their hands on it like they do alcohol and you will have 15 and 16 year old burnouts. Also you would just be putting more drivers on the raod high on Pot, we enough to deal with with Drunk Drivers as it is now. I think medically it should be used without question, but I see nothing positive about legalizing it, also you would free up more Drug Peddlers who would be free to sell it and they would be selling harder drugs as well along with it.

+5 thumbs upI SURE HOPE THEY LEGALIZE IT...WHY IS IT OK TO HAVE TOBACCO AND ALCOHOL BUT NOT WEED? LET ME TELL U GUYS SOMETHING...WHEN MOST PEOPLE THINK ABOUT PEOPLE SMOKIN WEED THEY AUTOMATICALLY THINK OF LOSER'S WHO IS 45 , LIVES WITH THERE PARENTS STILL, WORK MINIMUM WAGE, AND DOES NOTHING. THAT IS SUCH BULL!!!, LET ME TELL U, DOCTORS , LAWYERS , CONGRESSMAN , MAYORS , JUDGES , ATHLETES , MOMS , DADS , GRANDPARENTS , TEACHERS , EVEN PROBABLY BILL GATES, ALL SMOKE.  SOME EVEN DO WORSE THINGS. I HATE THOSE STUPID ANTI DRUG COMMERCIALS, THE WAY THEY PORTRAY WEED SMOKERS. IS SMOKING WEED GOOD FOR U? NO, BUT NEITHER IS TOBACCO AND ALCOHOL AND GUNS, BUT WE STILL KEEP PURCHASING THEM.

Okay, those who know me may be a bit surprised by my answer!  I've turned completely a 180 degrees on this issue in believing it is time to legalize the use M.J.

First, we are spending way too much money in the courts and the jail/prison systems for what is a minor infraction by users.  To legalize the drug and turn it over to the State and Federal government to tax for we would gain a great deal of funds for:  programs to make aware the harm in more significant drugs and drinking and driving; driving while impaired and the like.

Also, I would make it clear in all states that accidents while impaired under the use of M.J. would carry a very STIFF fine the first time and then the user would be looking at the potential of prison time.  Abuse of the drug and the right to use would be constrained when it comes to driving under the influence!

To legalize would reduce crimes of many natures due to the need to get the money to meet what is the higher price of pot---even with taxes the outlets allowed by the government still be cheaper and the pot, well---it would be MUCH better because it would be a "controlled" substance from seed to sales packet.  You'd know what you'd be getting.

Hmmm, can you see the sales posters in the shop(no tv ads by the way)!!!  I could see some really cool ads in the shops to advertise various types of available and their prices.

When I was a kid Chesterfield Cigarettes had a radio ad that had a song that was sung in a real 'blues' or 'dreamy' voice that went:  "Chesterfields, Chesterfields, Smoke Dreams, Smoke Dreams"  Weird but that's how it went---Can you imagine Pot Ads!!!!

+8 thumbs upI can't agree w/ that.  If pot is a gateway drug, cigarettes r the key to the gate, and they're perfectly legal.  And if that's the case, then beer is the gateway to more serious liquor.  There's truth to that, but I know lots of people that only drink one type of alcohol, be it wine, beer, whiskey, whatever.  Also, legalizing it won't make for more kids smoking pot.  The kids who want to get high r getting high now.  It's easy enough to get, ask any 15 y/o.  And some move on to other drugs, I know I did.  But I stopped doing drugs all together, b/c the time to grow up comes fast.

Also, I'll take high drivers over drunk drivers any day.  Pot doesn't impair ur vision the way alcohol does.  And I don't see how u wind up w/ more drug dealers.  There would be no need for pot dealers if we have legal places to get it.

At the very least, they should use marijuana medicinally.  It's already considered a controlled substance.  And the government DOES have pot fields, and huge ones at that.  They use them for research and such.
