Speaking Other Languages (Edited 04/19/08 10:21PM by Seth)

This poll kind of ties in with my "What is your heritage" poll.  Now that we're sharing our ancestry, let's share whether or not we can speak languages other than English.  Also, tell us if you were born outside the U.S. and English was not the first language you learned how to speak.

French is the 2nd language for me.  I also know a small amount of Spanish, but very little.  Also, I can read Slovak, but don't ask me to translate it.

In college I was fairly fluent in French.  But I haven't used it in a long time.  I also know a lot of Spanish words but I'm not good at linking them into sentences.

+3 thumbs upI can speak enough Spanish to survive.  The other day this little older couple beckoned me to them and they spoke zero English.  I was able to talk to them enough to understand (after a little work on both our parts) that the product they were looking at had some missing pieces.  You should have seen the look of complete suprise that broke on their faces when THIS red haired white girl broke out the Spanish.  lol.

1- I grew up in a bi-lingual home (Spanish and English) and learned both languages at the same time.

2- I used Spanish more because, living in Peru and Ecuador, nobody outside of our home really spoke any English.

3- I speak some Portugese (easy once you know Spanish), and took 4 years of German in school (of course I don't remember much of it).  For some reason they wouldn't let me take Spanish.

+1 thumbs up3 - I can understand a bit of Spanish and a TINY bit of sign language...but fluently (and I don't know if this counts) I speak what they call Double Dutch, which is kind of like pig Latin but it's way cooler.

***I lived in Germany for 18 months while with the Army and became fluent; lost it all within a year home---still can pick up 25% in War movies though.

***I took 3 years of Spanish in High School and retain enough to make the folks in Spain happy that I tried to speak their language while there...I pick up a some on Telemundo while at Mexican Cafes...but it is FAST

***I know a lot of very interesting terms and phrases in Vietnamese but I doubt the sexual and military phrases would come in handy anywhere in the U.S.

When I was younger I knew a lil Italian.  My grandma and aunt (her sister) always spoke to each other in Italian, but it was more so I couldn't understand what they were talking about.  They taught me some, but other than them, I never really had any reason to use it, so I lost most of it.  Also, I had a lot of Spanish speaking friends when I was younger and it's very similar to italian, so I wound up excelling in it in school, and b/c of all the Mexicans that r our workforce now, I've held onto that much better.  I wouldn't say I'm fluent, but I understand it, in both cases better than I can speak it.
