I went to Tampa in 2006 for a Sox away series and they averaged about 18,000 fans.  If they can't get over 25,000 in the place for each game this series, they don't deserve to be a first place club.

For a dome, the Trop is actually not a bad stadium either.  It's comfortable and doesn't smell like an old refrigerator like Montreal's Olympic Stadium did.
+4 thumbs upUh, no. They deserve to be a first place club because they are winning games. Attendance has nothing to do it.

#1. If they didn't play in the stupidest location maybe they would get a better turnout. Where I live and where the Trop is, it would take me at least an hour and a half to get there. They need to move the venue to Tampa where it belongs. They are not the St. Petersburg Rays....Pinellas County is filled with retired people that don't do anything. Very very boring area except for the beaches.

#2. The Rays played Boston at home 3 seperate times in 2006. The first averaging 25,556, 2nd getting 20,416 (the only series to be during the week, also during 4th of July), and the 3rd drawing 29,522. They have played Boston once this year and for that series they drew 32,900. The only thing that hurts this series is that it's during the week and it's leading in to a holiday weekend. But with the momentum they have, I think that more people will turn out for this one.

+1 thumbs upFirst, this is a football city and state. Always has been, always will be. No other state has more high school and collegiate level football talent.
Second, as Anthony mentioned, the Trop is in about the worst possible place it could be in the greater Bay area. If it were in Tampa, the Rays would draw easily 25% more every game.
Third, this is only the new ownership's Third season. The previous ownership cared little about putting fans in the seats and it showed.
Fourth, the Rays attendance is up 42%! through this time last year.
Fifth, the Rays are not the Red Sox or the Yankees.

Hate to disagree with you snb, but the Trop is a dump! The stadium needs to be in Tampa or at the I-4/I-75 corridor - so people from Orlando and up and down the West coast of the state can get there... it is in the middle of nowhere in St. Pete, parking is a pain in the butt and the place stinks as a baseball venue.

But I LOVE what the Rays are doing this season!

Compared to Olympic Stadium, The Trop is Disneyland.  Seriously.  Dump doesn't even cover it.  I saw the proposal for the new stadium in Tampa and I love it.  It would definitely be a significant improvement over the Trop, I can't disagree with that.

The Trop is the only MLB venue where I didn't have to pay for parking.  If you think it's a pain to park there, you obviously haven't tried to find a spot near Fenway Park about an hour before gametime. :)

Awesome, +4.

If attendance has nothing to do with it, neither does location.  Really what I was referring to was how the state of Florida tends to no-show for first place baseball clubs.  The Marlins have 2 World Series titles in their 11 year existence and can't draw flies.  "Waahh but the stadium is in Miami Gardens, it's so far from the city!"  I guess my point of view is jaded, being I drive 3 1/2 hours to Boston for Red Sox games.

I looked back at some info and just happen to have the attendance figures of the two games I went to in 2006.

04/29/2006 - Red Sox 9, Rays 6 - 27,415

04/30/2006 - Rays 5, Red Sox 4 - 26,690

Ah well, mea culpa, it was 2 years ago.  Nice crowds.  I enjoyed my time down there.

I hope the Rays continue to do well.  I plan on going back to Tampa next year and it would be great to see them remain competitive.
