The Drama Continues...

Ok.. Heres the lowdown on what happened last night.... My sisters friend Schuylar posted some very inappropriate things for a 5th grader on MySpace. They were pics of "big @$$ c0cks" and "giant jigglers."

And there were links to porn sites... very bad ones.

I caught my little sister looking at them. So I asked her where she had gotten a hold of these very inappropiate things for a 5th grader.

So she showed me the bulletins that her friend had posted on MySpace.

I had gotten very upset that my sister had a friend that had posted that crap.

So I called Schuylar and well here is the phone conversation..

Amie- Hey Schuylar

Schuylar- Hi

A- Alright Schuylar, I know you are a very intellegant girl but have you been on your MySpace lately?

S- Yeah I have.. why?

A- My sister was looking at the porn sites that you put on your bulletins.

S- I have no idea what you are talking about.

A- Schuylar, get on your MySpace.

S-I am.

A- Look at your bulletins.

S-I am. I didnt post em.

A- Well then who did?

S- I dont know

A- Have you given your password out?

S- No.

A- Well then who hacked your account without your password

S- Nobody.

A- Well then why do you say you didnt put those on there?

S- Because I didnt

A- I am not stupid. If no one hacked your account and if you gave your password out to nobody then how did they get on there WITHOUT you doing it?

S- I dont know. I just didnt do it.

A- Well.. you are just really upsetting me Schuylar.

"Click"

Then I got a phone call from her mom.

Shari "Amie?"

Amie- Yeah

S- Did you call Schuylar?

A- Yeah

S- She's crying.

A- Did she tell you whats on her MySpace?

S- No

A- There are links to porn sites and other $h!t on there.I caught my little sister looking at that. So I called her.

S- So?

A- SO? SO? YOU HAVE A 5TH GRADE DAUGHTER AND YOU ARE ALLOWING HER TO HAVE THAT $H!T ON THERE FOR THE WORLD TO SEE?

S- Yeah so. It doesnt bother me at all.

A- Okay. that just is just not in my virtues at all. my little sister just didnt need to see all that.

"Click"

So... Schuylar called me back and I just told her that she can be in denial about it but I wasnt going to believe her. Then I hung up.

Do you think that I was a bit too harsh because I got a phone call from the police this morning and the officer said if there was another report of me chewing someone out on the phone that I would be written up.

+25 thumbs upI'm sorry, but, in my opinion,  your little sister shouldn't even be on Myspace, especially  unsupervised.  Myspace is no place for a 5th grader for any reason whatsoever!

+5 thumbs upBut, what you need to realize, is you can't "parent" other children that have parents.  Why don't you let your parents know what your little sister is doing so they can monitor the situation...put parental locks on the computer or just stop her from using it without supervision?

What it really comes down to is how your parents handle the situation...not you.  Your sister isn't going to listen to you at this age without you and your parents all being on the same page...that's why it's called a family.

I can also attest to the fact that no other parent will listen to a teenager about how kids should be raised.  Most parents won't even listen to other parents...maybe your sister needs better friends...or just to be sat down by you and your mom to explain why it's inappropriate...followed by disciplinary actions if she's caught frequenting porn sites again.

Luckily (hopefully) I have a few more years before I have to deal with this as a parent.  My oldest is just turning 8...so maybe my advice isn't the best...just trying to use what my parents used on me...and what I plan to use on my children.

Hope all turns out well.

+3 thumbs upI put "yes" because I don't feel it is your responsibility to question what the girl did.  You should have either told your parents or called the girls mother.  The mother probably reacted the way she did because she doesn't want to answer to a 14 year-old about her parenting (she was probably embarrassed).

I wasnt trying to 'parent' her.. and also.. adding to that.. my parents are 'drunken crazy people' that dont care what my sister does. or me for that matter. so to her.. I am the responsible one.  I wasnt home at the time she gained axcess to the computer.. when I got home she was on it. So I did put locks on it.. so she cant get on to anything.. Also Schuylars mom and dad are spilt.. Neither knew about this until I told Schuylars mom. which really didnt matter anything anyway because she doesnt care. I just wanted her to know it was inappropriate.

First I want to tell you that I am the Mother of 5 children who I raised as a single mom ~ I am also Grandma to 23 lovely character building  children, 6 of whom are teenagers. That doesn't qualify me for anything except insanity. I never had to deal with the Internet problems with my children. The oldest is 33 and the youngest is 25. I thank God for that everyday.

Second, your little sister needs boundaries. If you are the only one available to create and keep those, then play the hand you've been dealt. If you are as sensible in that area as you sound, I know you can do it as hard as it will be.

I'm thinking the confrontation put her on the defensive. Hollering and cussing at someone is a good indication that the conversation will NOT go your way. If you had not included the information that the police were called, I might have given you the benefit of the doubt. That is a bad sign that things spiraled out of control during those phone calls.

I agree with Helen that no 5th grader should accessing certain sites. If your little sister MUST be on a social network, there are some that cater to younger people. Another thing I have learned is I only can "control" me...everyone else is outside my jurisdiction. That said, you certainly can influence your little sister to make better choices. From my experience, as soon as a "parent" figure says no to a pre-teen, that sets the wheels of rebellion in motion guaranteeing they'll do exactly the opposite of what they're told.

+4 thumbs upWell, Jesus...God bless you for doing all you can.  That not only greatly upsets me, but deeply saddens me as well.  I've never understood how people can do that to their children...and here I go probably making things worse by bringing it up.

I'm glad your little sister has a sister like you and I will keep you in my prayers.  Again, God Bless you.

It's called "phishing".  In other words, she at one time clicked a link somewhere through myspace and it brought her to a page that looked like she needed to sign back in.  When she did, the person got her email and her myspace password.  She probably didn't realize it, most people don't, especially if u don't look at ur profile page, which u don't have a reason to do unless u've changed it or whatever.

I seriously doubt ur friend was aware of this.  And w/ how long this has been going on, how r u not aware of it?

First of  all a fifth grader should not have a MySpace account.  Second, the parents should care what is posted there. Does this parent realize that schools look at these pages? Third, if Schuyler is telling the truth, then someone phished her account.

As for the phone call to the child, I would have gone straight to the parent first and if the parent acted the way they did, then you did everything you could have. Just keep your sister off MySpace until she is a little older.

+4 thumbs upMyspace is garbage!  Just like Yahoo Chat, ICQ, AIM, MSN Chat, and all of the others that came before it, it's being invaded by hackers and poon-squabblers!  Your best bet is to try and find ways of getting her off the computer, out from in front of the tv, and outside (with someone old enough, and trustworthy enough) being active, because heaven knows if she's eating the "chow" in the schools or fast-food, she's in danger of acquiring a "chronic thyroid problem!"  Seriously man!!!

If the police had any sense they'd have inquired a bit more about the situation, realized how mundane the situation was, and simply said:

"Sir, that [chick] has issues with parenting, and apparently with you ... I suggest you not call her in the future ... and in all honesty, if we're to be contacted about either of you, you should make sure it's you doing the calling, without contacting her, to avoid having your reputation tarnished ............. because you may be trying to do the right thing, but in this world ... being the way it is ... doing the right thing can still put you behind bars!  Have a good evening!"

I reckon that's why a bachelor's degree isn't required for the position ... in some cases neither is common sense.

MySpace comments and bulletins get hijacked all the time-- and not just young kids either-- "Spyware Writers" and newer virus writers have figured out ways to edit HTML commands to point to crazy things like spyware, porn sites, or even malicious viruses.

This whole issue revolves around marketing gone bad IMO-- these "spyware writers" get paid for either the information they collect from your PC, or each time you visit a certain webpage. Of course virus writers go hand-in-hand with this crap too, and they all know the most popular single website is....  you guessed it, MySpace-- and this is probably what happened with those "porn links".

In example, a good friend of mine had a bulletin posted "I got hot and nasty with this girl last night at the party"

I had to show him from my view that this is exactly what it said (which I knew couldn't have possibly come from him, seeing as he was out of town with his wife, and he's not the partying type anyway.)-- and for grins, I clicked the link-- sure enough, it had a link to a porn site and started loading spyware on my machine immediately (and dropped 3 viruses in just a few seconds!!!!)    Being in the IT field, I knew exactly what to do when this started happening-- pull the network cable and kill the spyware-- BUT this is the point--

MySpace is one of the biggest sources of spyware/viruses, AND don't believe everything you read from MySpace, ESPECIALLY from the bulletin areas-- Just be more careful about this stuff, just my .02.

You could call CPS and let them know that this 12 year old's mother allows her to view porn. Not sure any good would come out of it all, but her mom would be getting a visit, or at least a phone call.

WOW!! I found out 2 years ago when my daughter was 8...almost didn't make 9 that she made a myspace account and said she was 21.  I didn't have one at the time so I was mad.  I now DO have one, my schzit is on lockdown and got hacked and had to make a new page.  I have a lot of my Q Friends on my page and I can be as +pg-13 as I wanna be....maybe seeing you're looking out for your sister, YOU can put an adminstrative pw on the computer.  Here's my Question to ya lil lady, Where is YOUR mom in all of this?

I'm wondering why the cops got involved in this.

Last time I checked, police have better things to do that to get calls about someone "chewing someone out" on the phone.

Are the cops really that idle in Funk, Nebraska?
