TheShrewdOne's Thievery - NFL Franchise Players Part Bills (Edited 08/10/08 11:18PM by theshrewdone)
Read the Article: NFL Franchise Players

ESPN is doing an interesting poll and since I'm not very original, I'm stealing it!

Essentially, they want to know who the best player from each particular franchise is...all time!

Again, as with all my "thievery polls", I did not decide who to put on the list...if you want to get angry, yell at ESPN...or me for stealing their poll.

Bills Link

The Low Down:

Joe DeLamielleure, OL (1973-1979, 1985):
Six-time Pro Bowler who anchored the right side of line.

Jim Kelly, QB (1986-1996):
Led Bills to four consecutive Super Bowls. Ranks 14th all time in passing yards.

Andre Reed, WR (1985-1999):
Seven-time Pro Bowler ranks 10th all time with 87 receiving TDs.

Cookie Gilchrist, RB (1962-1964):
Led league in rushing TDs three straight years with the Bills.

Billy Shaw, OL (1961-1969):
Eight-time Pro Bowler helped lead Bills to two AFL championships.

O.J. Simpson, RB (1969-1977):
Led league in rushing four times. Six-time Pro Bowler.

Bruce Smith, DE (1985-1999):
First all time with 200 sacks.

Mike Stratton, LB (1962-1972):
Huge tackle of Keith Lincoln in '64 AFL title game, which helped seal Bills victory.

Darryl Talley, LB (1983-1994):
Two-time Pro Bowler who had over 1,000 tackles for Buffalo.

Thurman Thomas, RB (1988-1998):
Ranks 12th all time with 12,704 rushing yards.

You could argue Bruce Smith, but Jim Kelly was the QB.  I think you have to go with the QB.
+4 thumbs upWhy do you have to go with the QB?

Kelly, Thomas and Simpson were all close to the top of the list, but Bruce Smith is arguable the greatest ever at his position. None of the other guys can say that.

Currently Jim Kelly (my vote) is barely squeezing by Bruce Smith with 29.6% of the vote on ESPN.

You don't have to go with the QB.  I just think that the guy that touches the ball the most and is as good as Kelly was, deserves my vote.  I said you could argue Bruce Smith.  I wouldn't knock that vote.  I wouldn't argue too much if  you said Bruce Smith was the 2nd best player ever at his position (Reggie White).  In fact I teetered between the two.  Jim Kelly is my choice.  He doesn't have to be yours.

Ok Smarty.  I, was generalizing for myself in giving my opinion.  Let me clarify.  I, not you, I, have to go with the QB.  You, can go with whomever you, like.  My opinion is not meant to to tell you who you have to pick as your greatest Buffalo Bill.  You pick Bruce Smith.  That's a fine choice.  I, however, will go with the QB.  I, once again, I, will go with Jim Kelly.  I said that I think..  Think..  "that you have to go with the QB"...  My opinion...  again..  You...  You...  "don't have to go with the QB"....  They are both Hall of famers.  You cannot be wrong either way.  Especially when the decision is based solely on how important you feel that player was to the team.  As good as that team was, and they were very good, as evidence by the 4 Superbowls in 4 years.  I simply remember how good the offense was at that time.  They made more of an impression on me.  So by all means have your opinion, enjoy your opinion, stand by your opinion..  I certainly do all of the above for mine...
