TheShrewdOne's Thievery - NFL Franchise Players Part Chargers (Edited 08/11/08 02:38PM by theshrewdone)
Read the Article: NFL Franchise Players

ESPN is doing an interesting poll and since I'm not very original, I'm stealing it!

Essentially, they want to know who the best player from each particular franchise is...all time!

Again, as with all my "thievery polls", I did not decide who to put on the list...if you want to get angry, yell at ESPN...or me for stealing their poll.

Chargers Link

The Low Down:

Lance Alworth, WR (1962-70):
Set records others chased, leading NFL in catches, yards and touchdowns three times.

Fred Dean, DE (1975-81):
Sacks weren't counted until late in his career, but he was among the league's best.

Dan Fouts, QB (1973-87):
Six-time Pro Bowler led league in passing yards four years in a row (1979-82).

Antonio Gates, TE (2003-present):
College hoops player has made instant impact, four Pro Bowls in five seasons.

Jamal Williams, DT (1998-present):
Run-stuffer has been to three consecutive Pro Bowls.

Charlie Joiner, WR (1976-86):
A favorite target of Fouts, hauled in more than 9,000 yards in 11 seasons with team.

Ron Mix, OL (1961-69):
Hall of Famer was first-team All-Pro in each of his first nine seasons.

LaDainian Tomlinson, RB (2001-present):
At least 1,200 rushing yards first seven seasons, already third all-time in rushing TDs.

Junior Seau, LB (1990-2002):
Made Pro Bowl in 12 consecutive seasons with Chargers -- 47 sacks, 15 interceptions.

Kellen Winslow, TE (1979-97):
Prototype pass-catching TE, led NFL in receptions twice, 45 career TDs.

+3 thumbs upWith me it came down to Seau or Winslow. Both were at top of their position for long careers and played on some greatteams, yet neither won a ring as a charger. But 12 pro bowls is a pretty incredible number and i have had luxury of watching Junior his entire career. He is a 1st ballot HOF guy in my opinion and he apparently isn't done yet. he gets my vote. Dominated his position for over a decade.

+1 thumbs upObviously LT is winning on ESPN...52% of the vote.  I normally wouldn't vote for him just yet...but he has been playing for 7 years already, so I think it's enough to say he's their best all time player.

+3 thumbs upWhen the Chargers win something I will pick LT...Kellen Winslow had one of the single greatest games in NFL playoff history.  In a 1982 (1981 season) playoff game against the Dolphins that became known as The Epic in Miami, Winslow caught a playoff record 13 passes for 166 yards and a touchdown, while also blocking a FG with seconds remaining to send the game to overtime.  What made Winslow's performance all the more memorable was that fact during the game he was treated for a pinched nerve in his shoulder, dehydration, severe cramps, and received three stitches in his lower lip.  Now thats tough!

+2 thumbs upI wanted to vote for Dan Fouts but it was hard for me to ignore the fact that LT already has 115 Rushing TDs and 10,650 career yards rushing. LT needs only 9 TDs to pass Marcus Allen for 2nd All-Time amongst Running Backs, and he's only 3,000 yards away from cracking the top 5 All-Time in career yards gained. After his 14 year Hall of Fame career, Emmitt Smith holds the top spot in both of those categories. Like you said, LT's career spans just 7 years so I imagine he will challenge both if he can stay healthy.  It's a tough choice between LT, Dan Fouts, and Junior Seau. I just wish they were all playing together on the 08 Chargers. Charlie Joiner should receive some votes on your poll also.

+1 thumbs upIt isn't much of a poll. Considering that the past Chargers have zero Super Bowls(one AFL title), I'd go with LT. Antonio Gates wouldn't have much to catch, if teams didn't commit more players to stopping the run. It gives Gates a better chance at seperation, and they don't have much for WRs on that team. Chambers might be ok, but LT is the engine for the Chargers.
But, looking at the fact they're not even a .500 team....they better hope LT does it in the next 2 seasons.
After that, history has them falling down....just like in 1966, 1983, 1995....5-6 good years, then long stretches of nothing.

+1 thumbs up Get over yourself man....All you wanted to do was act like you know what you're talking about....Move on to something other than Wikipedia for your facts...Raiders fans talk about how "We, we've won a Super Bowl at least"....Not since 1983 though...Antonio Gates will catch the ball whether the Chargers run or not, and Chris Chambers is a guy who can pick up  1,000 yds receiving in a full-season...Enjoy going 4-12 in 2008 again like you guys have in 2003(4-12) 2004(5-11) 2005(4-12) 2006(2-14)2007(4-12)...Get over the bitter pain of the Chargers domination these past few years. You guys were great, but only in the 80's...How does that make the Raiders more prestigious? You really think Jim Plunkett was a better QB than Dan Fouts because he won 1 Super Bowl???? You really think "The Snake" is better than Fouts because he won 1 Super Bowl??? Take a look at which team led the league in NFL INTs last season...Offense??? The defense has been winning games for the Chargers of late...

So, I'll file your comment under "it doesn't matter, you're a raider fan" retort. Pretty basic comeback, saying we haven't won since 1983. Does it hurt to know your team hasn't won since 1963?

BTW, here's the second bucket.
Your winning streak has been what, 4 years? Before that, how long was it? Another ten years?
With my comments, I kept it focused on San Diego's window of talent....and the fact is, they need to do it now, or they'll go down in history like Fouts and company. Good at stats, poor on true quality.
How many QBs go into the season saying, I don't care about the super bowl, just let me pass for 50 TDs. None.
How many Linebackers go in saying, I just want 20 sacks, heck with the playoffs?
Pure and simple, unless a team realizes what it's playing for, settling for less than the goal, is trying to put a good light on failure.
Fouts failed. Kellen Winslow failed.
Every year, every team has the same task at hand. Win the Super Bowl.
LT, with the present players, has had several years' worth of tries. Last year, he got the best shot, but too much of his team was shot up.
How many more shots will he get?

+1 thumbs upNo it doesn't hurt that we haven't "Won" a Super Bowl....Not nearly as bad as being 19-61 over the last 5 years. Also, your'e the one who used the "BASIC" Raiders vs. Chargers argument first....You noted it in the 2nd sentence of your 1st comment...I'm just so sick of hearing "Bitter" Raider fans like yourself use the ol' "Have you ever a Won a Super Bowl" B.S.  Don't you guys have any "NEW" arguments yet...You can't keep holding your glory from 1983 man...You were 11 years old...Look at your calendar because it's 2008....

Not this year.
Actually, if you look back at your stats, Oakland beat both KC and Denver once each, in the season.
If the old system of tiebreakers was still in play(head to head, then tiebreaker of points scored), Oakland wouldn't have tied KC. Oakland actually outscored BOTH denver and KC last year on the head to head.
Also, for the Plunkett, I love the fact that Plunkett has more rings than Fouts....all that yardage got him a nice seat next to Marino, as one of the biggest passers....but the biggest choke-artists in the playoffs.
Heck, even the commercial with fouts and Stabler illustrated it. Fouts could brag about his yardage....but stabler could give him the finger, with a ring on it....something Fouts couldn't do.
Btw....since you think this is San Diego's year, what happened last year? They were supposed to do it then, and still couldn't get past the Patriots.....even with Brady sucking badly.
Lastly, where do I send the flowers, when Merriman's career dies?

+1 thumbs upas for
