TheShrewdOne's Thievery - NFL Franchise Players Part Cowboys (Edited 08/11/08 03:01PM by theshrewdone)
Read the Article: NFL Franchise Players

ESPN is doing an interesting poll and since I'm not very original, I'm stealing it!

Essentially, they want to know who the best player from each particular franchise is...all time!

Again, as with all my "thievery polls", I did not decide who to put on the list...if you want to get angry, yell at ESPN...or me for stealing their poll.

Cowboys Link

The Low Down:

Troy Aikman, QB (1989-2000):
Super Bowl XXVII MVP won two other SBs in his career. Six-time Pro Bowler.

Larry Allen, OL (1994-2005):
Paved Emmitt Smith's way at guard. 11-time Pro Bowler.

Tony Dorsett, RB (1977-87):
Seventh all time with 12,739 rushing yards.

Michael Irvin, WR (1988-99):
"The Playmaker" had 74.9 receiving yards per game, 10th-highest all time.

Bob Lilly, DT (1961-74):
"Mr. Cowboy" had a 29-yard sack of Bob Griese in the 1972 Super Bowl.

Mel Renfro, DB (1964-77):
CB/kick returner made 10 Pro Bowls and had key INT in 1970 NFC title game.

Emmitt Smith, RB (1990-2002):
All-time rushing leader in attempts, yards and touchdowns.

Roger Staubach, QB (1969-79):
No. 25 all time in passer rating (83.5). Six-time Pro Bowler and two-time SB champion.

Randy White, LB/DE (1975-88):
Nine-time All-Pro and Pro Bowl linebacker. Double-digit sacks in three straight years.

Rayfield Wright, OL (1967-79):
"Big Cat" was a six-time Pro Bowler on the offensive line.

Yeah, you better just go ahead and link to all of the "Emmitt argument polls"  to save yourself the hijacking, because I'm about to get it started.

Not only is Emmitt the choice here, he was a better RB than Barry Sanders.
+6 thumbs upAnd drugs are bad for you. But you don't care, because you're obviously high right now. No one could ever say that with a clear mind.

Why do I feel a heated debate coming with this one?  Maybe even a possible poll hijacking...oh well.  Emmitt is obviously winning on the ESPN side 51.7%...and I can't argue with that.

+3 thumbs upThis was a very tough call. The Cowboys were perennial Super Bowl contenders during my entire youth...and to me Roger the Dodger was the best QB in NFL and still played at an elite level when concussions ended his career. he was Mr. Cowboy. Naval officer. Super Bowl Champion. But the reason I gave my vote to Aikman is that Troy sure didn't inherit any post Staubach/White rosters... he inherited a disaster. In 89-90- Cowboys were awful. But Jones and Jimmy came in an executed their plan to perfection. The house cleaning was painful, but Aikamn hung in there despite taking a beating his 1st 2 years and then had a run of success that has rarely ever been matched. he was the master at managing games. many games his numbers weren't great. But when you can hand off to Emmit and dump it to Novacek and move the chains... why go deep? But Troy could also "air it out" when he needed to and made his receivers look good. ( remember harper after Aikman?) That is a great list. And all could be deserving. But with rock solid stability Aikamn captained the Boys to a dominant run in the 90's and the best run of a long time successful team.  I honestly think Cowboys could have stayed contenders minus Smith or Irvin, and found replacements... but without Aikman, they would not have added 3 more trophies.

+1 thumbs upI'm going obvious with the old school choice here. Mr. Cowboy and Mr. "First Ever" Cowboy Draft Pick-    Mr. Bob Lilly......  He was and will always be the epitome of the Dallas Cowboys Franchise!!!!

+2 thumbs upNot only does Emmitt have more yards and rings than Barry, he also never walked out on his team and fans a month before the beginning of the season with four years left on his contract.

...but let's respect Josh, this poll isn't about Barry Sanders.

+2 thumbs upThe yards and rings come from an obvious source, and it's not "more talent". The contract/retirement issue is COMPLETELY irrelevant. And I'm sure Josh doesn't mind. He knows Barry's better, too.

+1 thumbs upI'm an Emmitt guy...but when even Emmitt says that Barry is better, you lose all leverage that you once may have had...so I must give my props to Barry.

+2 thumbs upWell, there are generallyy two objective measures by which you can use to determine "whose better" when dealing with athletes... Stats or Championships.  Hence the Dan Marino/Joe Montana "best QB ever" argument (which Tom Brady may have already made moot).

I was simply pointing out that Emmitt has Barry in both areas.  If you want to go by "talent," or "what your eyes tell you," than you are making a subjective argument over who you believe to be better.  By the nature of a subjective argument, I can't technically be "wrong" (or high) simply because I degree with your point of view.

+1 thumbs upI prefer to go with the "Quality over Quantity" argument.

Barry had more yards per carry, more yards per game, and was also a better receiving threat out of the backfield. Not to mention the fact that Emmitt played in an offense full of Hall of Fame caliber players, while Barry's best teammate was... who? Sure, Emmitt put up bigger career numbers. But not MUCH bigger. In 5 extra years, he ended with only about 3,000 more yards. Awesome job, Emmitt... real impressive. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that if Barry wanted to, he could have gotten those 3,000 yards in 2, maybe 3 seasons, had he continued playing.

p.s. The "Championships" argument is a tired one. I can give you a bunch of reasons to consider Brady the greatest ever, without even mentioning Lombardi Trophies.
