+1 thumbs upAt home it's DSL, and it works great.  At school it's a LAN, and there's some days where dial-up looks good.

What did you do before high-speed? There was no choice but dial-up.

When I finally got my own computer there were other choices besides dial up.

+3 thumbs upMe neither...I have high-speed, and i still can't stand waiting for some pages to load. It should be instantaneous!!!!! For the price I pay for it, when I click on a new page or link it should be there before my finger leaves the mouse button.

+2 thumbs upI have DSL but I had dial up until about a year ago.  I live in a very rural area and dial-up was the only option until 2 years ago.  I would hate to go back to dial-up now.

At home I have the local cable provider at 5 meg;

for my lap top I have the Verizon Provider and it is QUICK...don't know the speed but it is fast and I really like it.  We were going to disconnect the cable at home and use Verizon for the Dell as well...but our son came home and that would cause usage problems...so, we have both!

+2 thumbs upHigh speed internet thru our digital cable.  When the cable goes out, which seems to happen more then not when the sun is out and not when there is a storm near, I become one unhappy scorebot

I have a T3 hookup I went to that from dial-up and I thought my comp was busted because things came up so fast, I believed it had to be already in memory. The only way I would have dial-up now is if that was all that was available.  Nowadays the service is faster and has more bandwidth than the mainframe computers network did at college only 4 to 5 years ago. Now I don't know how I would deal with snail dial-up.

+2 thumbs upI've been fooling with computers since they figured out silicon chips it seems, like the mid 70's. Back then high speed was considered how good your cans and string was waxed. If you weren't on a network and knew how to program using punch cards, you were sadly on your own. 1st modems were 300 baud, not 300k mind you, but 300 bits per min Programs over 1000 lines took about 3 hours to process and about 7 days of troubleshooting, debugging(new punch card), cussing and threatening to burn the damn thing to get it to work right.  So today it take seconds to download a few megs, so isn't technology great.

   When we received our FIRST computer onboard the USS Fort Fisher back in the early 90's, it was a Zenith 248!  We had on ole' Chief that told me, and I quote "You will NEVER in a million years, fill this computers memory up"!!!!!  Where is that dude today?  Most likely still using a typewriter!

I can relate with him. Early programs were designed to use much less system memory as it was "EXPENSIVE!!!" With the advent of modern home computers the cost per KB is extremely cheep. Back in my old Univac days 10KB of memory would cost almost $1 per byte or about $10,000.  Now if your system doesn't have 2GB you are "SLOW!!!"

Wasn't many years ago extra disc drives cost $200. Now a 3 1/2" floppy drive is about $10 to $20. Wild stuff we have now. I can't wait to see the next huge leap from today's CD & DVDs.  Old HDD systems were freaking huge in size and small in actual memory.  Tape drives are still used in the business world  for data storage because of cost. No we are very lucky today with our home systems. Many are more advanced than  some large corporations because of the cost to refit or refurbish old main frames.
