+6 thumbs upI have to go with the Grateful Dead, but you can dress up like dirty hippies and dance in circles for days with pretty much any of the bands listed.

Garcia made the breast pocket black t-shirt a piece of iconic clothing, but more importantly invented almost everything you've heard on guitar since him.

Don't know if anybody has ever heard of or seen these guys: RAQ---but they play some face peeling tunes... definitely worth a live listen if they are in your area

I've seen or heard 14 of the bands listed.  I've been to 12 Grateful Dead Concerts in my lifetime; 10 of them herbally and/or chemically prepared for a "Full Concert Experience."  Of the 14 listed I still have to put the "Dead" at the head of the list because they are so egaging of their audience.  Virtually no one sits at their concerts if that is feasible.  They stand, sway and dance; they talk with one another about the music and experience; they go to the "support tables" and buy things; they dance around the venue to the songs with groups of people or by themselves and sometimes end up joining new groups of people who become lifelong friends.

I have four people that I still communicate with that I've met at "Dead Concerts" that live all over the Mid-West and I'd have NEVER met them except for the Experience of "The Dead."

The music still stirs in me a sense of freedom, movement and joy!

+2 thumbs upI agree that crap like DMB (and his underlings Jack Johnson and John Mayer) is more GAP music than it is real rock, but it has to be included.  He has an army of jaded fans.

I'd have to go with The Allman brothers...Duane Allman was a phenominal guitar player...John Mayer is a good guitar player (watch his Austin City Limits gig) as well although I don't like the bulk of his work.

+1 thumbs upNever really been into this kinda music.  The only one I can say I really like is Primus, but I've never seen them live.  I absolutely hate DMB.  He'll say a bunch of crap that only makes sense when ur coming down off a 3 day high, reevaluting ur life over an ill-advised steak n eggs at ur local Waffle House.  But I'll go to his concerts.  Not for the music obviously, but for the thousands of college girls who r there for the same reason as u.

You have alot of chutzpah to admit to this, But I agree, when you find yourself at a place where not even the music is good, you must rely in your animal instincts and sniff out (what I like to call) BoDussy.

It's like going to Walmart.  U know it's evil, u hate most of the people there, and it goes against everything u stand for as a decent human being.  But damn if it doesn't have everything u need.

I was originally gonna compare it to a bar u can't stand but has a free pour going on.

LOL @ BoDussy...

Skynyrd is too heavy to consider them a "Jam Band" but they and the Marshall Tucker Band would def. be 1/2 if I made a Southern Rock poll.

+3 thumbs upI'm going to have to go with The Roots. They put on a show that has been unmatched by any others. Not only do they play some classics (they did Black Sabbath's Iron Man and Jimi's Purple Haze), they also play songs that were created by synthesizers and hip-hop samples. Not to mention, if they have Rahzel with them, you get the Human Beatbox as well.

+1 thumbs upGood call.  Saw the Roots at Villanova with Rahzel and Scratch... a beat box battle ensued... and Questlove is no slouch on the drums

+1 thumbs upI'm going with Oysterhead. Les Claypool, Trey Anastasio, and Stewart Copeland. Three masters of their craft. I'm not sure Primus should be on the list though. All Les' other projects definently should be, but I don't think Primus should. Just my opinion. Great poll too.

I don't like Dave Mathews Band either...but they are very good musicians.  I just don't like his voice and their style of music.  I do like Jack Johnson and some John Mayer and they are both good musicians also.

They're the only artist that is both, because they have plenty of rock opera lyric-less 'Jams' to go with some of their other songs.

+1 thumbs upAs a veteran of over 300 Dead shows this argument should start and end with them.......all others "jam" bands are inspired by the tracks the Dead laid for them.  Blues, country, rock, bluegrass, you name it, The Dead played it...and played it well.  I was at the last Dead show ever at Soldier Field in Chicago and the second set was one of the most amazing things I have ever heard.  A free flow blues jam that had 70,000+ people on their feet.  Rest in Peace Uncle Jerry....and Keep on Trucking Deadheads!
