Big Ten Finally Moving Closer to Adding 12th Member

Big Ten Finally Moving Closer to Adding 12th Member PhotoSwitching gears to college football for a moment, the annual Big Ten preseason issue has presented itself yet again. With the Big Ten Network now in place, the conference is moving closer to adding a 12th member.

"I think we need to look at it in the next year," he said during a wide-ranging interview with Register reporters. Adding a 12th team likely will be revisited because of the network, which is scheduled to launch Aug. 30, Delany said. An additional big-name university in a large television market means more exposure for the network and its sponsors.

"It changes to some extent how you think about it," Delany said of expansion. "The broader (the network) is distributed, the more value (expansion) has.

For a period of time I was content with the Big Ten remaining the Big Televen and holding out until Notre Dame finally gave in and joined the conference. That's not going to happen. With more money, and more credibility in crowning a conference champion it's time for Jim Delaney to make a decision.

Aligning the two divisions could become a huge clusterf*** (just East and West?) but the days of the top two teams not playing each other have to stop. It shouldn't be so hard to follow the lead of the other leading conferences. Big Ten Title Game at Soldier Field would be a hit.

We've asked this before, but since it's been roughly a year, let's do it again. Who should the Big Televen try to add?

Who Should the Big Ten Add as the 12th Team? (Edited 07/26/07 09:56PM by Pat)
Read the Article: Big Ten Finally Moving Closer to Adding 12th Member

The question arises every preseason. Now the Big Ten is actually moving closer to this move with the pressure of the Big Ten Network.

Who should be the 12th member? (Assuming Notre Dame continues to say no)

Interesting. I hadn't heard their name mentioned, but that'd be a nice get for both Louisville and the Big Ten.

Assuming no Notre Dame, I think West Virginia would make a good fit although I don't know if Morgantown qualifies as a large television market, but the team would fit in well.

REALLY interested to see how they would determine divisions. East/West could put OSU, Michigan, Penn State in one division. I can't see that happening. Maybe they go more North/South, split OSU and Michigan but still make them play each other every year since they'll do 5 division, 3 other division each season (you know they won't give that up).

+2 thumbs upNo offense to those that have attended WVU (ok maybe a little) but I know the Big Ten is very concerned about the academic resume.

Also, I think they will only keep up this 11-1 stuff for the next 2 or 3 years then it will be 7-5, 8-4 or 9-3.

If they're stealing a Big East school I'd root for Louisville but I know WVU and Pitt have both been rumored in the past. But then again being at OSU I've heard rumors about different 12th teams ever since they added Penn State.

So who joins the Big East in a team defects, or who would replace Iowa State in the Big XII.

Note: With Temple set to join the MAC on full status next season I think, they will have 13 teams and be in a position to let a team leave to the Big Ten. Not that I have a MAC team I want to see in the Big Ten but it seems like an easy scenario. Then again maybe the Big East would just take a MAC team if they lose one to the Big Ten instead.

The Big East would then steal another Conference USA or MAC team and change there name to the Little East.

I think the most realistic scenario is a MAC school leaving to join the Big East. Ohio State would block any Ohio school joining the conference.

I'd obviously like to see Miami jump to a bigger conference, but the Big Ten is unlikely even if they're probably the most capable school to compete with the conference in ALL sports, not to mention add to the academic standards.

Notre Dame or no one.  There is no real need to add a 12th team, so why do it?  There doesnt need to be a conferance championship game.

I'd like to see ND be a part of the Big Ten, but there's no way they'll give up keeping all their proceed money from games, bowls, and NBC TV revenue.

You're content with just going by tie-breakers and potentially finishing 2nd because you didn't have a shot at the number one team?

Then they might want to learn how to count, since last time I checked 11 or 12 did not equal "Ten".

This is why I picked Iowa St. I think of the options out there, they are most compatible academically (of course, this is a very uninformed opinion. I have no idea if the numbers support that). But, I am coming around to Syracuse. I think it is pretty good academically and would add a new TV market, where Iowa St. would not.

Can I change my vote to Syracuse?

+1 thumbs upHow would the Big 10 just steal another team from another conference? Dont they have some kind of obligation to that conference?

I think Delaney (and myself) see Syracuse as the best option for television reasons. They have a lot of ties to the big eastern television markets, they themselves have one of the best communications programs in the country and the university seems to fit a good mold for the Big Ten. Not too mention fairly solid athletically (obviously down in football right now).

Plus the rest of the Big Ten wouldn't mind having another reason to go recruiting in New York.
