+5 thumbs upi have to go with the "King" on this one.. most wins and most starts in NASCAR history, that should speak volumes in itself, he won NASCAR races on the dirt, on the pavement. and 27 wins in 1 season.. i think his accomplishments just speak for themselves..

+3 thumbs upI think Bobby Allison because he did more with what he had than any other driver in history. He won in a Matador.

David Pearson's NASCAR Statistics:

Racing Career: 1960-1986
Starts: 574
Wins: 105
Top 5s: 301
Top 10s: 366
Poles: 113

His overall win record of 105 places his second only behind “The King”, Richard Petty whose career wins total 200. His winning percentage of 18.29% is number one for those drivers competing in at least 240 races.

Richard Petty said about David Pearson "a better pure driver than I am and probably the best pure driver ever." Petty continued, "he drives smart and hard and he has to be one of the best ever. I respect his record, which is the best ever."

+3 thumbs upNo doubt he was great, I just say you can not possibly compare them from different times, rules (EVERYTHING) is different!
I have a lot of respect for Pearson, and Petty, But line em up today, and I am not sure even they could have that much success!
Just a opinion, that is all!

+3 thumbs upi agree, but i also bet if you threw Jeff Gordon into an old Daytona Charger that Petty drove for some Championships, i bet Gordon wouldnt be able to drive it as well as petty did.. the old cars were so much harder to drive then the cars of today..

+2 thumbs upI could not agree more...  The way technology and tracks have changed over the years, it is very difficult to  compare drivers of today with drivers of the past eras.  From dirt to paved tracks, from short tracks to super speedways, from souped up street cars to engineered race cars; how would you even start?

it was definently dale, when petty was winning everything racing was not as popular or competitve. dale started at that time and was winning, and he was still winning when the sport had evolved into what it is now, against the toughest competition.

so your saying the racing back when Petty was racing was not as competitive?? how do you figure that??
Petty was one of the pioneers getting NASCAR to where it is, the "popular" drivers are the ones who helped push it into the public eye and get it more out there for the public, but if it wasnt for Petty, Allison's, Yarbrough's and the others before Earnhardt, it would not be where it is today..

im not really saying it like that, of course it was competitive, but  racing was limited to mainly the east coast then. when rod osterlund made his way from california, he brought doug richert to someday be dale's crew chief, neither of them new much about Nascar racing, only seeing it on television a few times, and look what they did, their second year in the series dale won the title. im just syaing that there were better drivers and teams who were out there but hadn't yet got an opportunity because nascar wasnt as popular as it is now.     and of course petty, allison, yarborough, and roberts were the pioneers of the sport, but when dale was rising to power nascar was getting more and more exposure due to the advances in broadcasting, and technology
