+4 thumbs upwith no dis respect to howe, this question wasn't who was the best hockey player, it was who was the best for the wings, and steve built the team around him and made the players around him better, he played for the logo on the front, not the name on the back
Steve Yzerman

+3 thumbs upYzerman was what a captain should be. He showed up night in and night out, put is body on the line was true team player...how many players would alter their playing style for the benefit of the team to become a more defensive player when have the offensive skills he had. He was the "man". Even though I chose Howe, which is purely on stats, Yzerman will most like be known as the best captain ever in the NHL if not already

Gordie Howe played just about his entire career for the Red Wings. If he is a better hockey player then Steve Yzerman, then he was obviously a better Red Wing. Duh.

I don't see how any halfway knowledgeable hockey fan can pick anyone but Howe here. Well except for Crackersexwife who gave a reason for why she picked Steve Yzerman.

Well i'm all for Yzerman. I think he is playin pretty good for now. I don't think players should be ranked on how they used to play or when they were good. Should be year by year cause man they do get old and don't play well every year... so ya i change who i think can be a good player for the team as they play durin the current time they are playin. ya howe was good, and messier but if they can't keep up the game then like other players. they become the ones that were good. lol thats what i have to share :P

So you want to rank players by how they play year by year right? Then Steve Yzerman should be one of the worst players on your list. NEWS FLASH! HE RETIRED 2 YEARS AGO! Thanks for showing everyone how big of a bandwagon jumper you are.

I'm trying to recall that same mark who left new york to play for vancover only to come back 3 years later. That same mark that had 4 runs with three different teams. Really best captain ever, do we even need to go in to detail of some of the players some of the greatest ever he was surrounded by his entire career.

I'm not sure what your point is. None of that has anything to do with whether or not he was the greatest captain ever.
