+6 Lou Gehrig and Mario Lemieux are my #1 and #2. Lou Gehrig is just not only one of the greatest Ball Players ever he was the epitome of courage, class, and inspiration. Just the very best of qualities of Athlete & Human Being. Terminal Disease is all that stopped the Iron Horse, and his farewell speech is the legacy that embodies the man. Mario Lemieux is much the same in many ways. Both are icons of the sports world and off class.
+3 Vince Lombardi(NFL), Gordie Howe(NHL), Babe Ruth(MLB), Julius Erving(NBA). I know there are others out there but these guys were the first names to pop in my head from the "big four" sports.

Sorry about that Ed. I agree that it should be the first 4 that come to your mind.
+4 BOOOOO for the Reggie Jackson selection. If you MUST put the all-time strikeout leader on there, at least put Nolan Ryan, because he's on the RIGHT side of the record. Reggie Jackson is another classic case of a Yankee who's overrated because of a couple good games. He's the Adam Dunn of his era.
+3 Satchel Paige and Wilt Chamberlain are my other two. Satchmo once had his infield sit down crosslegged while he struck out a batter (if memory serves it was Josh Gibson, who was a hell of a hitter in his own right). That takes some nads. Dude was a showman, not just an athlete. Plus he was insanely good.

+1 I thought he was the king of self-promotion and well, he'd figure out a way
+1 Wow... best choice yet. One of the best athletes of all time, and obviously a pioneer in African-American athletics. I'm a little disappointed that I forgot about him.
I really like this pole: 1. Tiger Woods ~~ Because he is the best at what he does, and a credit to his race, community, and the sport.
2. Lance Armstrong ~~ Over came life threatening odds to represent the U.S. in a feat no one else will ever do.
3. Other ~~ ( Richard Petty) acomplished something no one else will, and always waited to leave the track only after his last fan left. Giving back to his fans.
4. Other ~~ (Jerry Rice) All time leading receiver, that was a credit to the sport setting an example of true sportsmanship.
Now I know that all of us have our own ideas, about Sports Superstars, but the real stars are the people that accomplish their feats all the while setting a great example of sportsmanship, citizenship, and love for the sport and people being more important than the paycheck.

Richard Petty is a great one. Of all sports records right now, with a few exceptions like hittin gsafely in 56 games, his records might be the most out of reach. 200 career wins? no one will ever come close..
