Why are gas prices still going up? (Edited 08/01/08 11:52PM by Seth)
The prices on fuel for the last 3 years seem to have steadily risen. Why? If it hasn't hit $4.00 in your area yet it will.

+3 thumbs upFor the longest time I wasn't worried about rising gas prices.  I always looked at it like the rst of the world had it worse off.  Some countries in europe where paying the equvilent of $3.00 per liter which equaled about $6.50 dollars per gallon US.

Now that we've discovered oil in North Dakota we should drill.  We should have been drilling in Alaska and of our coastline  for years.

Walter Sobchak: You mean... beyond pacifism?

Donny: Are these the Nazis, Walter?
Walter Sobchak: No, Donny, these men are nihilists. There's nothing to be afraid of

+2 thumbs upWell I don't know about ruinning alaska but we have vast reserves that can be used in times like this. Maybe our government should take over the oil business in this country. Regulate it's price. I don't know the perfect way to fix this but it seems like the corporations build cars. The corporations control the prices and the government try to deal with it. Remember when diesel was the cheap alternative to gas. What happenned? Now diesel is more than gas. Just seems that us as consumers are being taken for a long ride with no end in sight. Somebody(everyone) needs to do something. Improve mass transit, mass produce biodiesel. I know I'm rambling now but we can't afford rising gas prices right now.

+1 thumbs upSomeone sent this e-mail to me that said we shouldn't buy gas from certain stations because they are run by a group that funds terrorists.  Maybe true, maybe a made up story.  Well if we put those guys out of business then there will really only be one oil company and then they can charge whatever they want.  After all where else will we get it? It doesn't matter where we drill if only one company owns everything.

The Dude: (interrupting) Walter, Walter, what's the point, man?
Walter Sobchak: There's no reason - here's my point, dude, there's no f@$#%&*@ reason why these two...
Donny: Yeah, Walter, what's your point?

+7 thumbs upI don't know that I agree with this.  In order for that to be true, either demand would have risen dramatically or the supply would have decreased dramatically.  I don't think either of these has happened to the degree that would cause the prices to rise as sharply as they have recently.  The oil companies take advantage of every "political" situation they can to dupe the public into thinking that there will be a decreased supply of oil.  Often, the news reports will even say that prices have risen in "anticipation" of something that may occur.  I am all for companies maximizing profits as long as they are not gouging the people.  In a poor economy, I believe these companies are being irresposible.  Many people are to the point now where they cannot even buy enough food for their families due to the increase in food prices because of the increased fuel expenses food companies are facing.

+2 thumbs upGovernment- doesn't anyone find it strange that our wonderful government has decided to step in for the rising cost of food that is made from wheat and rice..... but they just shrug their shoulders at the OUTRAGEOUS gas prices.   And the quarterly numbers just came out and Exxon reported $11 billion dollars in profit.  They have us all grabbing our ankles.

+1 thumbs upThat number of $11 billion is the highest 1st quarter profit number ever posted by any corporation.  Everything in this nation is effected by the rising price of oil, and while complaining about it is like pissing against the wind, it doesn't make it ethical, responsible, or sound policy in a struggling economy.  I am fortunate because I work from home and don't have a daily commute.  Anywhere withing 10 miles I travel by bike.  Supply and demand is hardly the issue.  It's more like supply and dependence.

We're probably headed for a recession-- thanks in part to OPEC control, Oil refineries' greed, and (unrelated to this topic) the greed of making shady mortgage loans.    Actually this may not turn out to be a bad recession, but it makes for a heckuva example of how severe corporate greed in a couple of business sectors can combine to impact the US ecomomy.
