Why was Clint Bowyer asked to switch his car number and sponsor for 2009?
Clint Bowyer will be moving from the #07 Jack Daniels/Direct TV Chevy, to the #33 Cheerios/Hamburger Helper Chevy for the 2009 season.
In my opinion; General Mills requested, upon changing their sponsorship from Petty Enterprises to RCR, that they wanted Clint Bowyer as the driver and not Casey Mears due to his previous sponsorship with Kellog's at HMS!
So I'm asking you; who or what caused this change in your opinion?

+11 thumbs upit's not beyond sponsors to request or want certain drivers, however, not all do.  my take on this is that it's due to who is better at qualifying a new car and keeping it in the top 35.  i wouldn't want mears to drive my car, but it's not because he eats frosted flakes, it's because he doesn't eat his wheaties before he hits the track.

+3 thumbs upI answered stating I agree with your opinion but it's not showing up. Great topic!

You are the "Clint" expert here and I'm too tired to think of an opposing view

+2 thumbs upthe reason is, is because Clint Bowyer is a bitch driver.. lol.. lol. what it is im sure is that Cheerio's and all that dont want to be associated with the #07 everybody knows the 07 is a standard thing with Jack Daniels.. so they dont want they "FAMILY" values tarnished with an 07 on the side of it..

While I'm a fan of conspiracy theories, your's isnt the reason that Clint Bowyer is being asked to move.  Because RCR is expanding to a 4th team, that car will have to qualify on time for the first handful of races in order to make the field in 2009.  Out of all the current RCR drivers, Clint Bowyer is the best when it comes to qualifying, thus he gets the "short stick" and is being moved to the 4th team.  It's a win win situation for RCR as Bowyer should have no problem qualifying for the races and staying in the top 35.  The only thing that could throw a wrench into there plans would be if qualifying was rained out, especially early on in the season.

I can understand the reason General Mills gave.  They wanted Bowyer instead of Mears.  Why, you ask?  It's because they wanted a driver who would represent them well.  I know Mears is sponsored by Kellogg's with HMS right now, but let's be honest, he's not the greatest driver out there.  Bowyer will get Cheerios more recognition and will represent them better because he's a better driver, and can be guaranteed to get good finishes every week, whereas Mears might get a top 10 once in a blue moon.

+4 thumbs upWhat?  Now the sixteen people with 07 stickers on their back window will have to change it.  Just kidding.  It's not like when JR. changed numbers or Tony changes this coming year.

+3 thumbs upInitialy I heard that Mears would go to the 33 and RCR would petition NASCAR to move the 07 points to the 33. So like you said Clint would be the guy needing to qualify either way? So why switch numbers if it wasn't a sponsor or merchandising decision?

clint keeps the car up front and in view of the cameras... mears doesn't.  i'm sure Jack Daniels/Direct T.V. is not too happy, but RCR did what it needed to obtain General Mills as a sponsor.
