Would Javy Be A Good Backup Candidate? (Edited 12/21/07 03:26PM by Seth)
Read the Article: How Will Bullpen Look In 2008?

This pertains to Braves fans, but we would love to hear anyone else's opinion.

One of the questions in the Braves Mailbag came from a fan wanting to know why former Braves catcher Javier Lopez wasn't being considered for the backup catcher role in Atlanta next season.

Like the writer states, if management wanted to bring more females to the stadium, then Javy is the way to go.  Other than that, I don't see the fuss.  I have seen this question pop up a few times now.  Other than the sentimental side of it, are these people serious about wanting him back?  Do most Braves fans want him back?

I had no idea that Javy had been passed around like that.  I would be worrying about his knees tho, along the lines of Piazza now.  I saw Richmond down here in Durham back in the playoffs, I think we have some good talent, concerning the rest of the article.

+1 thumbs upJavy was great and i'm sure he'd do good for a while but he's pretty old why not get someone who would improve rather than retire

I don't think that the Braves organization is considering him, I just keep hearing fans ask about him.  And I agree.

Who is Richmond?  With all the talk about Clint Sammons going on, I've missed any other top catching prospects in the organization.

Sorry meant the Richmond Braves, team as a whole, when they were in town playing the Durham Bulls.

I'm no Braves fan by any means, but Javy still has something left in the tank.

+1 thumbs upI'm happy with Pena already. Javy just can't get it done like he used too. I wish him well where ever he plays but I hope it's not in Atlanta.

If Javy has truly improved his defense then he's my pick to be Brian's back up. I know he has worked on his d this offseason and is reportdely in better physical shape than in 04. His bat still has plenty of pop, although I dont expect him to reproduce his gaudy 04 numbers by any means. He can be very potent off the bench and when MCCann is ailing... if he stays defensively sound behind the plate.

I sure hope you are right.  I was never a Javy fan.  I enjoyed the huge year he had as a Brave, but other than that season, his offense never made up for his poor defense.  Greg Maddux was one of the first pitchers to use his own catcher.  It just so happens that Javy was that catcher that Maddux didn't want to use for the first time.  That is saying something.  Cause Greg could pitch to a garbage can and get most people out, but he had no faith in Javy.

I really, really hope that he has improved and he can benefit the team off of the bench (if he makes the club).  Because if he makes the team and struggles in his backup roll, then we will be wasting time and space that could be used by Clint Sammons or Brayan Pena, two young guys that are ready to come up to the bigs.  And being in a backup roll would be great for them because it would ease them into the Majors.

I will be pulling for Javy.  And Bobby Cox has been known to bring out the best in "washed up players".  So maybe this is going to work for the better.

+1 thumbs upI'm with you on the fact that Javy's never scared a baserunner in his life lol. I've been encouraged by his reported physical condition and his desire to be a back up for McCann. I remember Greg choosing not to use him and his d being a major liability but I think he could offer a little more o than Pena or sammons at this point. Thus allowing the youngsters more time to become well rounded catchers in the minors. I dont see him being handed the spot, so if he gets it, it'll be because he outperformed Sammons and Pena IMO.

I have to say, that's an excellent way to look at it.  You made me a little more optimistic about this situation now.
