+6 thumbs up

I was voted "Teacher of the Year" twice by the students.  I was elected Vice President of the Union the first year the faculty had a Union(I turned down the presidency).  I had a National Championship Forensic(Speech) Team for Community Colleges (small schools).

BUT, some Administrators referred to me as a "Central Negative" because I often challenged virtually every decision and program until they could show the benefit over cost or the impact for student/faculty versus the College/Administration.  In other words, I was a pain in the butt===but they respected my position because it kept them honest!

+2 thumbs upNot exactly sure what is meant by "Company Man", but I did my job +, my work day didn't end at the end of the day and it didn't begin at 0800 like most.  I worked from 0530 until I fell asleep at my desk for 6 years and didn't get a damn thing for it.  I'm not at all bitter though, not EVEN A F$%^&@#$ little bit toward those ungrateful p#@$#s of low flung c#$p!

+2 thumbs upI am a UNION MAN first and foremost!!! But, my job is to make the Contractors money so that they continue being Union Contractors and I do my job well- and they pay me well to do my job. I believe in giving an honest 8 hours work for 8 hours of pay.

Today I put in my 8 at the office, took 3 calls after I got home, and now it's 12:45 am and I'm working again.

Granted, days like this only happen when I am on call, but motivated by pride in getting the job done right, not by any loyalty to the company.

+1 thumbs upI'll do my 8 and skate but I take pride in my work, when there IS work.  Pretty slow in the surveying and engineering field!  Dam housing market...got everyone scared to building anything unless its Phase 2, 3, 4, etc...

+1 thumbs upI am (as Hskrdave just supplied this answer) a "Lifer".  I have been with my company for more than 10 years and given them my blood, sweat, and tears.  I work hard when I am there, but am glad to leave when that time comes.  I stay late when I have to, change shifts when needed, etc.  I take pride in my length of service to my company and in the knowledge I have accumulated about my job, but when I'm home it's out of my mind.

I work for the government so I don't even think about my job when I'm there.

I have to follow certain guidelines to stay in compliance, but I like to do things my own way when possible because it works best for me, which in turn works best for the company.

Kinda have to be.  But my loyalty is to the job itself, not the politicians who oversee us.

I have worked almost 22 years in the same position. The first 15 years were with a company that was bought out by a much larger more famous company 7 years ago. I didn't realize how much better I had it with the old company. I went 15 years with the old company and only signed/filed about 4 or 5 grievances. I had some opportunities to move up to a salary position. But was never really interested. Good thing I wasn't because in the 7 years since I have lost count of the number of grievances and clashes with management I have had. If I had been in management I would have been long gone. Most of the complaints were contract violations due mainly to the fact the new company immediately began cutting people we went from over 2700 people in 01' to about 500 today. For 15 years I was a go along with the program. Since then I have learned I am only number and doesn't matter what or how much you do in the end, you are disposable. So now I would think of myself as a Renegade, If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything.

It all depends on what time of the year it is.  I work in retail and the spring and summer months are alot more busy then the fall and winter.  I stick around longer then my shift goes...somesay against my better judgement...to make sure that everything is full, stacked well and looking up to standards.  I work salary and tend to put in alot more then 45 hours a week from early May thru Labor Day.  When September rolls around and the place isnt as busy, I dont stick around once my shift ends nor do I find myself going the extra mile as much.  Dont get me wrong, I take pride in my work and you'll never see anything empty on my shelves when I leave, but once in awhile I like to make up the time that's coming to me, seeing as I dont see it show up on my check.

I am considered the rebel in my profession. There are rules to be followed, and generally I follow them by my interpretation. Because there is no black and white in customer service, only gray

A supervisor once told mr that he wished he had my work ethic. It was no surprise thar other workers would come to me with problems or that management would ask or depend on me to help out when and where needed. I have 2 things I have never had to be asked for twice and that is to come to eat or an opinion. When lied to I became angry and would tell whoever was guilty that when you blow smoke up my ass I would see it come out my ears. Once when real upset with owners in a meeting I asked for I told them I felt like the boy who beat his head on the ground and when asked why he said "Because it feels so good when I quit. Then I asked if they were tring to make me quit. Everyone felt as I did and by being honest I felt the resect of workers amd well yes management will and does take advantage . With benefits wages and security they also deserve your loyalty.

I was a whatever it took to a what ever it was person. Who felt loyalty to job because of benefits, wages, and security. Was also person who felt like he has respect of co wofkers as I was honest and would express diference's that needed to be worked on. As I believe the most important tool is communication.
