mom can we.. no.. mom can I have.. no..
Is there a food or a "treat" that you would want as a kid at the grocery store, but your parents would say no.. either cause it was bad for you, or too expensive, or other reasons?

What are they and do you buy it now for yourself?  what about for your kids?

+12 thumbs upThat's how we met... I asked if I could get some of this and she said "Do you have any money?"

The rest is history.

+2 thumbs upMy mom would NEVER buy sugar cereal, soda, or candy of any sort. Our "treats" were yogurt, raisins, homemade granola, and the occasional box of Honey Nut Cheerios. NOW she buys sugar cereal and Pepsi all the time.

Once in a while when my dad worked day shift at the mine he'd stop by the convenience store on the way home and buy us a bag of popcorn and a little candy bar. We loved it when my dad worked day shift.

+3 thumbs upThe biggest complaint I had in growing up is that we never had anything to drink besides water, milk and powdered tea.  As a result (I call it post-childhood-beverage-deprivation) at any given time I almost always have more to drink in the fridge than i do food.  And name brands in general.  We always had "store brand" stuff and we all hated it- especially cereal (freakin "Toasted O's"!)  But there were 5 kids and 2 adults so I know the cheaper price was the reason.

+1 thumbs upWhen i did ask for stuff, it wasn't very often but my mom would buy it for me. I knew better not to ask for things because i wasn't getting it. I don't have kids yet but i know my mom is going to allow them to ask her and get everything they want from her because that's exactly how my grandmother is now.

+2 thumbs upI call it pop when I get it from a fountain. I have no idea why but in Jess's little world, bottled/canned is soda and fountain is "fountain pop".

+1 thumbs upOh - and to answer the other part of the question...
Yes, as a result, my house never goes without some sort of candy and I have a Pepsi addiction I try at least once a month to kick. I don't buy sugar cereal though and I don't let my daughter drink any soda and I stash the candy so she can only have a little bit once in a while. Yea, I'm that mean mom.

+7 thumbs upMy brother and I used to want all of the cereals that had the good toys in them, even if we didn't like the cereal.  Mom always said no cause she knew it would be wasted food.  Now I go buy all of those cereals with the good toys and take the toys to my moms house and leave them on her from porch when she's not home.  Kinda freaks her out.

+1 thumbs upI would grab at everything sweet, and my mom would tell me to put it back.  Occasionally she'd buy me something, but it was a rare occurrence.

It's one or the other, make up your mind Jess...and the correct answer is POP!  A soda is what you make with ice cream and POP (not root beer, that's a float.)

Now back to our regularly scheduled fiasco, already in progress.

+1 thumbs upok well here's the deal - I used to call it all pop. But I have smarta** friends and family, and every time I'd ask for a pop I'd get a "pop" along side the arm or something...so that broke me of it. Maybe the "fountain" in front of it gives me the confidence that I'm not going to get punched.
