What do you say?
When I go to Memphis every year, we ALWAYS have the conversation about what we say vs what they say.  We poke fun at each others accents ( they have one.. not me) and we discuss the different ways that people say and call things.  They also talk funny, my uncle LOVES vowels, he makes sure that they are the main letters in a word.  For instance fourth of July is pronounced FOrth of JUU-Lie...

So I ask you... what do you say?

My parents were from the South and after military life, settled on the Gulf Coast of Texas.  Now, I'm in Indiana for almost 18 years!  I use both.  Mama has since retired and moved back to Tennessee.  If i'm down there long enough, I talk like them.  I would have made a great translator because I tend to lean toward whatever accent I hear.  I was a transcriptionist in a hospital for a long time with doctors from all over the world.  Guess I learned to listen there!  Anyway, my Southern family makes fun of me when I'm there.  They say i've acquired the bad habits of the Yankees!!! LMAO

I have lived in Northern Michigan for the majority of my life and a year ago I moved to South Carolina.  Almost everyday at work there is a comment made about my accent.  Here I am, not aware that I have an accent and these freaking people make comments on a day to day basis!  I am sticking with I talk normal and everyone else has the accent! lol
And for the record, Becky, it's POP!  =)

I travel to Minnesota regularly, and on one particular trip, I saw a sign near a farmhouse that said "Boat for Sale".

Since I was looking for a new boat, and I had a few minutes to spare, I stopped.  Next to the sign there was an old tractor and an old pickup truck.

The farmer came out to greet me, so I asked "What's with the sign, I don't see a boat for sale".

The farmer said "ya sure, dat der's a truck, and dat's a tractor".  I said "I know, but where's the boat"?

He said "I don't know what you're talking about fella, but dey are boat for sale".

Yes schmorty, you guys up der have an accent.  Now pass me a pop.

In Iowa we have several different accents.

In the North we have the people who are affected by the Minnesota accent bleeding across our border.  South we have a partial Missouri twang, which is similar to Arkansas, just a little more intelligent sounding.

In the middle we all sound normal.

Diet Sunkist is the only carbonated sodapop drink that matters.

I am from the Southeast which is a slightly different accent than from the inland South.

I don't call a Taxi because we don't have any.  Small town, you call your friend if you need a ride and if they can't come get you they will call someone who can.

Vowels are great, without them you can't pronounce any words.   (Vwls r grt, wtht thm cnt prnnc n wrds....SEE)
Even though I say y'all, I  have no discernible accent to speak of.

GA Girl. I say yall and sometimes you all depending on my mood. I may just say you since it is already plural, depending on who i am talking to. I would never say pop. If i ask for coke, they are going to bring me a COKE or maybe a pepsi if  no COKE. what kind of coke means diet or caffeine free to us. I rarely even say soda, "we" say drank: Bring me a drank out the fridgerator. What kind? see.
Instead of fixin to, my friends fave term is "finna": I'm finna go to the store.
And for the record, grits are awesome if they are cooked right. please dont add sugar, jelly, or cheese though.
