I remember this from my grandmothers house. You shared a phone line with a nieghbor, if the nieghbor happened to be on the line you had to wait until they were off the line to make a call or get one. The funny thing is that you could listen to or join in on the conversation. Needless to say, my brother and i and a few of my male cousins always got our ass's beat for getting on the phone when the nieghbor was on the phone and listning and adding our 2 cents worth which was usually adding a cuss word or two.
#13 | 29 days ago

I got 8, but you have to remember where I live it takes a while for the new technology to make it this far south!

You know, Bart, most of the 14 things I remembered were because of my grandmother's house, too.  Just because we're 48 doesn't mean we're old...I think we just had old grannies!

#22 | 29 days ago

I remember 5 of them.  In fairness, I "remember" the metal ice trays because my grandmother had them in her basement freezer from decades ago!  I actually still go to a diner that has little jukeboxes at each table, which is cool.

we had a line like that in the city, out at the cottage in the country we were on a party line where everybody who was on the line had a different ring. One person might have 3 longs and a short, the next cottage might have 2 shorts.....it wouldn't take long for us kids to figure out who had what code and we could catch all the neighborhood gossip.

I got 3. They still have a couple of Drive-in theatres where I live, and candy cigarettes and sugar water wax bottles were still around in the early 90's.

Oh yea thats right. I forgot about the rings. My grandmothers was 2 short rings and the lady next door was 3 long rings.

I remember 5...

Candy cigarettes
Wax bottles with colored sugar water
45's
Drive-Ins
Roller Skate keys

The candy cigs were my favorite!! And does anyone realize that they dont call them candy cigarettes anymore? I believe they are now simply called candy sticks.

I remember all 25 and could add some.  Those old ringer washers hurt like hell if you got your finger in them.  The wax soda pop bottles were great as were candy cigarette's.   The metal ice trays sucked because your fingers would stick to them.   Ice cold soda in bottles was the best.  Howdy Doody was cheesy but hey we only had three channels back then on a black and white TV with a rabbit ear antenna.

I just heard about the initial excitement from people waaaayyyyyyyyy older than me...of course, I don't personally remember the invention of any of these things...color TVs, VCRs, microwave ovens, and Polaroid cameras.  And my first car stereo didn't have an 8-track player in it either...I swear!!!   <fingers crossed behind back>

I did get my fingers caught in the ringer. And yep the 3 channel system sucked.

I know all 25...but only REMEMBER 23.  I grew up (and still live) at the NJ Shore....60 miles from NY, 60 miles from Atlantic City and 60 from Philly.  We got CABLE TV in about 1970, which took us from 5 NYC Channels all the way up to 12 CHANNELS!!! We got the Philly channels, too.  I think it cost my parents about $8/month....but we had a picture WITHOUT snow....and Dad didn't have to go up on the roof to adjust the antenna.  I'm 46 now.....it seems like a LONG time ago...

I got 13. How about those early microwaves that weighed about 200 pounds and drained the whole street of power just to heat up a cup of coffee? Or clock radios with the numbers painted on little rollers?

I remember all 25,   my fingers getting stuck to the metal ice trays that was after we traded in the ice box for an electric one.  Remember the ice man delivering ice and the milkman the milk in glass bottles.   Going to the store and getting black jack and wax bottles and candy cigs.   a little later we got  a tv and boy was Howdy Doody our favorite.  My first skates had a key.  My first record i bought was a 33 1/3  record and the rest were 45's, my daughter still has most of them.  Had a phone from the time i was seven and the first one you had to wind the thing and the operator said  "number Please".  Oh yes  as a teen we had at least 6 or 7 families on our line, but by then it was the rotary kind.  Fun times at the drive-ins and  diners with the mini juke boxes on the tables.  I have washed clothes on the wringer type washer and hung my clothes outside.  I remember helping my grandma wash in a big black wash pot outside over a fire and scrub board.  The very best  of times.  mimeograph paper in high school.  I was honored with  the privilege  of running of  work assignments and test for teachers.  Loved the smell of the ink.  Pop in a machine was cold and very good, not weakened down like it is today.  My dad would take me to the movies on Sat. afternoon for the matinee,  westerns usually and oh yes there were news reels.  Studerbakers,  Packers and Hudsons  They were back when you could tell the difference between the makes.  We got all kinds of goodies with green stamps.  Even in washing powders was always a dishtowel or washcloth or glass.  Of course i  PF Flyers for gym.   Hi Fi's came along after i was married. pea shooters and cork pop guns and butch wax were for the boys, and you made a picture inside with your Brownie you had to put a blue flash bulb on it.  Christmas always smelled so good.  We would put up our real cedar tree about 2 weeks before Christmas and with 5 kids some body was always peeling an orange or tangerine   Mmmmmm  I am getting homesick now, i will quit.
