Should I stay or Should I go?
Should I stay or Should I go? PhotoShould I stay or Should I go? Photo

So the rumors are already flying. With the numbers Tate and Clausen are putting up this year a lot of people are talking that one or both of these Notre Dame players might leave early for the NFL. So what is your take, will one or both leave? Would it be better for them to stay or leave? Will what Tate decides to do be based on Clausen's decision?

Neither one of them is ready yet, JMO. They are not mature enough skill wise, pressure wise etc, to be in the big leagues. They would both be swallowed up like little guppies if they try to swim with the sharks too soon!

If I was a ND fan, I would say stay.  But, with injuries to Gresham and Bradford of OU, they may be too scared to stay.

They should stay if only out of respect for Fat Charlie.  Charlie's only chance of keeping his job is to finish strong this year, keep the dynamic duo and allow expectations to rise about next year's possibilities.

Well, they should go, no one likes the Irish anyway.  Maybe they'll end up on a good team in the NFL...

j/k, Love the Irish.

I'll always answer this the same way, finish your degree.  Take out an insurance policy if you have to, but finish the degree.

Leave, their is not agreement with the league on player salaries.  They will make more money this year than they can by staying.  The only direction a potential high draft pick can go is down.  Ask Leinart, ask Bradford in 6 months.

With the money these guys make, they can always return and finish getting their degrees.  Sometimes their name recognition is worth more than a degree.

Both young men should do what is best for themselves and their families.

Fans should be OK with whatever their decision is.

They should stay but wouldn't be surprised if they jumped.........The Bradford situation is probably on their minds. Personally, I think they should stay so both can hone their skills and be better off in the long run. Too many go for the quick buck instead of thinking long term.

Tate is awesome and should go...Clausen could still use some work but the QB class this year is not NFL-star material IMO...if he waits, he'll be ok

to much chance of getting hurt if the chance is there you have to take it you can always come back to finish school
if you see a stack of cash sitting on the road dont drive around the block and expect it to be there when you come back around if you make it back around

Cool, a NDSU Bison fan.

I respect your point, and this season is loaded with examples to support your opinion. Still, I'd encourage them to finish, not necessarily use up their eligibility, but get their degree. If you're 3 years out of HS, you're not mature enough to handle a 7 figure income anyway. The NFL is littered with more 3 year and done guys than anything else, so finishing their schooling is very important.

Clausen could use more experience...not every rookie qb can come in like Matt Ryan or Joe Flacco.  Just ask Sanchez! But Tate is becoming a beast.  He might go.  I'd rather see them all stay in school, but the lure of the big bucks in the NFL can sometimes be to much.

I THINK they both should stay. I'm not big on players leaving College early because MOST don't make it and are a HUGE waste of money. With that said, I THINK they both will leave. Tate will get drafted in the early (1st- 3rd) rounds , Clausen will go in the later (5th - 7th) rounds!

Tate is probably ready to go, but I have a feeling he'll finish out his Senior year and get his Degree. That's gives him another year to get even better and and be picked as a higher draft choice. Clausen, he's not quite there yet...he gets frustrated easily and another year will polish off his rough edges.   Thumbs up Kevin..great poll. GO IRISH!!

Thumbs up that they both stay!!!     Good answers!!!

So first as a ND fan, I hope both return, but will not blame them if they don't.

For Clausen the reasons to go are many, let's start on the field. ND will only have 1 returning starter on the O-line, His numbers have really improved his draft stock. If he were to return and get hurt or not put up the same kind of numbers his draft stock drops. If he does return he would probably be the front runner for the Heisman next year and with some improvements on defense, possibly compete for a National Championship. Jimmy is a guy that likes the spot light and the lights don't burn any brighter than in the NFL. But the biggest factor might be his coach. If Jimmy believes that Weis won't be back or were to be fired. Jimmy is gone, I hope that the AD at ND realizes this fact most of all. This is the one thing that ND can control.

For Tate there are 2 factors, the return of Michael Floyd being one. Floyd was putting up sick numbers before his injury and Tate's stats suffered because of this. The other factor being Clausen, if Jimmy goes so does Golden. I think that it is possible that Golden might leave even if Jimmy returns. But we will just all have to wait and see how things pan out.

You are way off on the QB class for this year.  This class is absolutely stacked with the big names like Bradford, McCoy, and Tebow, all three likely to be taken before Clausen, as well as guys like Tony Pike who are built for the NFL.

Bradford might be considered "damage goods"; What will Tebow be used as? Most "Experts" seem to think he won't be a NFL QB....but on the face of it you are right.  Another reason for Clausen to stay another year.

I always think the players should stay, but I think Tate will go.  I don't think his stock will be any better than it is right now.  As for Clausen, he needs to end this season strong and have a good senior year for him to have a shot at the earlier rounds.

Even with the injury to Bradford, he would be picked ahead of Clausen if he were to come out.  The same thing with Tebow and Colt McCoy.  There is a ton of other competition from some smaller programs, i.e. Dan LeFevour, Tony Pike, Max Hall, Daryll Clark, Jake Locker, Tim Hiller, plus a load of juniors that could make the jump to the draft.
