Who is better in 2010? The Indians or the Pirates?
My two favorite MLB teams are the Indians and the Pirates.

Both teams finished 2009 terribly after trading away their best players.

So who will have the best record in 2010, the Indians or the Pirates?

 The Pirates just traded a mediocre bullpen pitcher, Jesse Chavez, for a top-tier 2B coming off injury, Iwamura, who hits around .300 and would be a perfect 2 hitter after McCuthcen.

Plus, the Pirates will bring up Tabata on June 1st and will have a top level outfield again.

They traded a lousy reliever for a so-so second baseman.  They'll have a top level outfield if they don't trade McCutchen or Milledge when they bring up Tabata, which knowing the idiotic Pirates is exactly what they'll do.  This team makes me suicidal, and I refuse to pay for tickets to see them until they prove to me that they give a rat's ass about being contenders.

Wow - chill out. ease up on the suicide references. Its just a game. I have fun every time me and my peeps go to any baseball game.

And this move looks great. Seems like the Morgan, McLouth, Sanchez, Wilson and the trade to bring in Delmon Young look like very positive.

And whats with the language? That's a big turn-off.

 It's just a game, but it's been SEVENTEEN years of complete and utter embarrassment, and until they prove that they actually care about winning, the Pirates don't deserve one red cent of my money.  I want to see a winning team, they've been an embarrassment to professional sports long enough.  I can spend my money on better things than Pirates tickets until they start putting a competitive team on the field every day of the season.  Until that day comes, I refuse to go to PNC Park.

 Oh and for the record, if they're planning on using Delwyn Young, why are they trading for ANOTHER second baseman?  The trade for Iwamura was no different than the lousy trades the last 2 GMs pulled off over the last decade and a half.

 Hey, I don't really know but I've been a Pirates fan for over 50 years and you've just gotta believe.  Did you know that Bing Crosby used to be a part owner of the Pirates and Bob Hope was a part owner of the Indians?  Well, Bing always got the best of Bob in their "Road" movies, so that's one reason for thinking the Pirates will be having the Indians walk the plank in 2010.

You'll have to excuse me for not being very optimistic after the last 17 years.  I do believe...that they'll hit 20+ consecutive years of losing before Bob Nutting even hints that he gives a crap about winning.

Yet none of those teams have had as many consecutive losing seasons as the Pirates.  The Rangers had a winning season this year, the Texans are a much improved team this year, the Blue Jackets just made the playoffs, the Thrashers just won their division 3 years ago, the Bobcats have only been around for 6 years now, the Clippers were in the playoffs as recently as 2006, the Padres were fighting for the NL Wild Card 2 years ago, and the Grizzlies were in the playoffs 3 straight years, most recently 2006.  They've ALL been better than the Pirates since the Pirates last had a winning season.

Both teams have problems, but it appears the Indians ownership actually wants to field a winning team. Cant say I see that on the agenda of the Pirates owners anywhere. Small market size is a convenient excuse they use, they could field a competitive team - maybe not a world series contender, but a competitive team.

 I have said on this site many times that the Pirates are an embarrassment beyond all speaking. This is Pittsburgh, home of the reigning champions in both the NFL and NHL. I don't want to hear about how those leagues have salary caps. That doesn't make all the difference. That doesn't excuse 17 consecutive losing seasons. Even the Expos/Nationals franchise has had more collective success over that stretch. I wish the ghost of Roberto Clemente would haunt Nutting every night.

That being said, the Pirates do have a lot of promising young talent-- of course, we'll have to see how much they actually hold on to. I think they will post a better record in 2010 only because the National League is overall weaker than the AL. They get to play a lot of games against the mediocre Reds and Astros in their division. They get six games against the Nationals. The Indians have to contend with the Tigers and Twins in their division, and of course have a half-dozen each against the Yankees and Red Sox. They also get to play the Royals a lot, but that series will probably split right along the cutting edge of ineptitude.

I agree - I think its another example of how the Pirates actually used the Yankees. In the most recent examples, the Pirates gave up Damaso Marte (very good), Nady (a complete bust) and got back Tabata, Ohlendorff and several other pieces. On those exchanges alone, the Pirates have the upper hand on trades made with the Yankees.

Let people say the Pirates are Triple-A for the Yankees - the Pirates are getting the better of the Yankees management.

Because growing up with my Dad as a huge sports fan in Youngstown, Ohio, we support Northeastern Ohio teams - except the Browns - any team that ran off the great Paul Brown deserves to have its fan root for the team he went to next - the Bengals.

Who could love the Reds that had an owner like Marge Schott for so many years???

Ah, well that makes sense =) Schott was an idiot, but I'd have to say current Reds ownership is (slightly) smarter than the folks who run the Indians, not that either one is in great shape right now.

Yet they've won a 3 or 4-game series in Houston (at most) 3 times this decade.

People still go to games.  Attendance in 2008 was actually UP for home games as opposed to 2007.  Nutting also owns a very popular ski resort.  He makes a good profit with the team and his ski resort.  In his mind, he's still making a profit, so why should he bother putting together a winning team.  THAT is why he doesn't care about winning.  He's being a very clever businessman, and only gives a crap about the money in his pocket.
