If you had asked this question 6 months ago my answer would have been "I don't think so"...but fortunately I would have been wrong, I've yet to see him go off the handle on anyone or thing this year and his drive to compete and win is still there.  Smoke has matured alot this season and I think he's going to be a very successful owner/driver...

I have always been a Gordon fan. However, Tony is an extremely talented Driver/Owner whom I have always had the utmost respect for with his abilities to drive any kind of car and the fact that he is BIG in the CHARITY work. That is AWESOME!!!!  As of last Saturday night, he is also $1 Million richer!! Nice driving Tony! He is just outside of the points lead. He will win a race very soon!! I almost forgot, he also drives for the bow ties!!!

I think he has better organizational skills that killed some others like Darrell Waltrip late in their career. Overall, Tony Stewart appears to be the exception to the rule on owner drivers. This is the same man who took a failing Eldorado Speedway and put it back on the map. From that stand, he appears to have very good business sense.

Could he break the streak on driver/owners. The last driver/owner to win a championship was Alan Kulwicki.

Hey Larry, not to be a smart ass, but I think you meant Eldora not Eldorado. But I get the picture and do agree with you.

he has always been a great driver,he just dident know how to handle it,he will win a championship with his own team,it will take a couple of years      good luck tony!!!!!!
#7 | 185 days ago

He knows how to win, and he's got the pieces in place to prove that you can still be a successful owner/driver in this day and age.  The All-Star Race was just the beginning.  He could very well be ht next Alan Kulwicki.  A lot of people questioned him when he rejected Junior Johnson's offers, and he proved everyone wrong.  Right now Smoke is on his way to doing the same thing if he keeps this up, and he's already proven people wrong with his season so far.

Tony can make good of whatever he does. He may find out what Rudd, Rusty, Waltrip and others have found out though. It's easier just to drive the car.

tony has proven to be a better team owner than he was as an employee at JGR or even as a team mate to the younger driver's there. tony's whole attitude has changed even his style of driving, and of course he isn't out there wrecking cars on purpose now that he has to open the wallet and pay for the car and the fine.tony has always been a great driver and could be on any given day be a great interview,he was hot headed and i don't think that the temper has suddenly gone away but as far as car owner/driver tony is the only thing between him and success as car owner/driver,if tony continues to drive the way he has this year then i believe before the year is out we will see tony standing in victory circle, and i would say within 3 years win the cup for a third time.

what is this ur first yr watching. Probably a Gordon fan.Im from Speedway,Indiana where the 500 trackis its not in Indianapolis.Tony has showd over the yrs how GOOD a Driver he is. he was just tired of team owners telling him what he could and couldnt do like drive a Toyota-PaaallleeeaaasssseeT.his move you should notice  his maturity, dedication and being hands on in the garage.Get out of the frig and maybe youd notice a race once in a while

That is not even remotely why the question is asked. And if you think he's the only driver out there that  that so calls " WHINE'S " get it right. He tells it like it is. And he's gonna break alright...Owner/Driver records. Haven't seen the last of Tony for a while. UNSTOP ABLE OHIO. Oh ya. And whining is spelled this way. So the next time you start to whine about Tony Stewart  at least spell it right.

I've never been a Tony Stewart fan, BUT, I have to give it to him.  He has come a long way controlling himself and so far looks pretty good as a owner/driver.  I think things will work out well for Tony.  He is a good driver and seems to be level headed so far regarding the team.

The question looks to be a joke now that Smoke has proven every critic wrong.  However, this was asked at the beginning of the year, when everyone had the thought that you can't still be a successful owner/driver in this day and age.  My foot tastes pretty good by the way.

Yes this poll was about 121 days ago, but never doubted he would could do it. It is just awesome to see him do it in his first year. Every thing he gets involved in is a success. But I do thank every one who is a smoke fan for their opinions. Smoke rules.

1.) Tony has been much more grown up this year if you've paid any attention.
2.) He did not hit Reutimann's crew member on purpose, and it is not the first time that has happened.  Accidents do happen unfortunately.
