Can you help me quit smoking?
I am in the process of quitting smoking. I am going to be getting help from the ACS with support and quitting aides. So if anyone has quit smoking what did you use to help you get threw it? Also if you have any stories or advice I would love them also.

Look up pictures and stories of people who have died from lung cancer----it is a horrible way to go. I grew up watching my dad go from having chronic bronchitis, to emphysema, to finally getting the news he had lung cancer. He died at the age of 56, 8 months after being diagnosed.

Good luck! You CAN do it!

Power of the mind. When you feel like you want a cigarette, think about something else. Gotta occupy your time with something else that you enjoy.

I'd love to tell you just how to quit, but I'm really fiending for a smoke right now ... maybe later.

I actually DID quit for a few months and started up again because I'm an idiot and I'm weak  lol  but I used the gum and a "fake" cigarette called EndIt (supposed to kind of taste like a cigarette but without the nicotine) and together they did work pretty well.  Like I said, though ... I'm weak and couldnt handle all the people around me smoking, coming around me smelling all delicious (to a smoker trying to quit, smoke smells delicious  lol).

Either way, best of luck!

Got you beat ... just under $8 a pack here in NJ!  I hear they're about $9 a pack in NYC and Atlantic City (I'll be sure to stock up BEFORE I head down to AC next weekend!  lol).

I have friends that tried to quit smoking - there was hypnosis, classes, the "gum",  etc.  Not being a smoker, I am probably not much help - but I watched my Dad die of lung cancer, a heavy smoker he was, and could not kick the habit.  I wish good luck to you and I hope you find the right thing to kick the habit.

Before I quit last year, I was smoking 2 packs a day. I stopped cold turkey and just kept telling myself that I don't smoke, whenever I got the craving. It takes determination and commitment to achieve your desired goals.  I also substituted nicotine cravings with snacks and after a week or so I was able to quit for good, and I haven't looked back.

I quit for 3 years 4 months with help from the patch. Forgot I stopped one night when having a beer.lol well 4 years later I'm having to do it all over again. My point is this you can do this stay busy inhale deeply when the urge is very bad triggers the same as taking a drag, but most importantly, remember it is a one day at a time addiction dont think in 4 years you can smoke just 1. good luck.

I smoked for 14 years and quit cold turkey. Well, I prayed a lot and I feel God answered the prayer... Just change your habit at the most crucial times when you smoke like when you get in the car and drive, after eating, when you wake up or whenever you crave it the most. You can beat it 1 urge at a time.

How I wish I could quit.
I think all is up to you.
You make the decision and achieve it.that is all, nothing else can work as it works.
I had seen  many women that quitted so easily, just decided and didnt smoked after that.
But I think men are not that lucky or strong, lol.

The main thing is will power, the want and commitment  to quit. You also need some sort of support network to help ya. I wish I could follow my own advice. MY dad and others died as a result, but I cant seem to quit myself. I have though with the patch and Walmart brand Nicorette. I just end up starting up again months later.. Good luck to you and Congrats on taking that first step to WANT to quit!

JUST GIVE ME THE DAMN CIGS ALREADY, ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.
#24 | 124 days ago

Good Luck!!!

When overcoming any addiction it's helpful to understand it.  And know that your addiction is not just to nicotine, but to dozens of other chemicals too.  You can try a more 'natural' cigarette to get you off of the chemicals first.

Here's one available around here, you'd have to check and see if you could get them where you are:

Quitting is Easy, I've done it 10 times already.

But Seriously I quit cold turkey just the one time, and haven't smoked since.  My dad did it through Acupucture.

And my grandfather died of lung cancer.  So I strongly suggest do whatever it takes to stop.  As a financial advisor, it's funny when people tell me that have no money, yet they'll spend $50-100 a month on that.  Just think of the money you will save.

Ive got to "piggy-back on what bayareabeast said. Find something, anything to substitute that smoke. Nicotine is habit forming, but it is still a habit. I used to find myself just holding a pen between my fingers before I even relized what I was doing back when I was trying to quit. I used to try to eat a snack instead, then I had to lose the extra weight. I ended up changing my whole routine, but after about 3 months I quit for good. It's not easy by any means, but you can do it.
#28 | 124 days ago

Be strong, self confident and do it cold turkey! Do not do the things you used to do while smoking, change habits and snacks! It has to be a life style change and something you want more then anything in the world. If you do not help yourself nobody else can support your  habit! It is a drug and with anything else there are support groups. Good luck and pray for the strength, let go.. Let God!

I had multiple reasons to quit.  You have to have strong reasons to quit other than "I want to quit" in order to do it cold turkey.  If you don't have strong reasons, then support/accountability will help a ton.

What are your reasons for wanting to quit?

Mine were:

I have a child now, if I don't want her to smoke, I have to lead by example.
I have a child now, I want to try to live as long as possible to enjoy her.
I have a child now, I have a lot more expenses to pay.
I don't want to stink like an ashtray all the time.
I don't want my car to stink like an ashtray all the time.
etc.

And as bayareabeast said, replace your thoughts when you first think about smoking to _________ (insert a reason why you're quitting).

Nothing will stop you but yourself IF you truly want to quit.

I used to smoke a pack a day, but quit....   it took about 3 months to finally do it, but this is how I did it--

1) Bought a new car so I wouldn't smoke in it anymore (well, you don't have to buy a new car, but stop smoking in your car )
2) Stop smoking after meals, or as soon as you wake up (I always used to do this)-- it will take you a few days to get used to this.
3) Don't pick up a cigarette when you drink a beer (if you drink alcohol) immediately-- I used to like lighting up as soon as I opened a beer....  This is tough, but it can be done
3) What is left is you now smoke only when your body "wants" a cigarette-- at this point, you don't smoke when you drive anywhere, after a meal, when you wake up, have a drink, or any other association of habits.    Now, quit cold turkey--

What happens is after you quit cold turkey, if you disassociate all other habits from smoking, you will quit MUCH easier.   I didn't get any self-help B.S. about this, I just sat back and gave it a lot of thought on how to get rid of the smokes.  This was 3 years ago, and I haven't restarted again once....

To give a little update: I was smoking over a pack a day today I have only had 3 so far

I called the Florida quit line (by the ACS) and they will give me either patches, gum or Losenges for free and counseling to help me threw it but they cant get to me for over a week so I decided to put my noise to the grindstone and start working at it by myself. It has always failed me in the past but hope this time it sticks.

Great reasons...

Mine are...

I want to breathe better, and walk further
I figured out what I spend a week on cigs,x 52, and when I got my answer, I figured out I could
go to 4-5 more races a year on that $$$
I would like to be NOT addicted to anything
I have a few more good years left, and would like to be around to enjoy them.

As far as replacing my thoughts with something else, that works really well, until the cravings make my heart speed up, and I get real bitchy and people start telling me to just smoke one and quit being so bitchy!

I guess like everyone says, if I want it bad enough I will do it!

Also, something that helps is during those certain times where you "normally" would have a smoke (i.e. after eating, first thing in the morning, before going to bed, etc.) do something else, like chew gum, or drink a whole glass of water.

I also found chewing, or just having something like a cigarette in your mouth helps (I used pen caps when I needed to, or straws).

First of all, make sure you want to quit. Then find a hobby that you like that will take your mind off of the cigarettes. Try doing the Find a word Puzzle Book. each time you think about a cig, grab the book and start working the puzzles. most of these books cost a dollar. if there is a dollar store in your hometown buy at least ten. also if you chew gum this helps too. It is not hard to quit. Just make up in your mind this is what you want to do. I quit cold Turkey. the first week my be hard. get pass this and the rest is down hill. you can do THIS. take a look at a pcture of a person who smoked for years. there lungs are black and ugly from all of the smoking they did. this will make you decide very quickly. take a look see!!!!!!!!! Smile!!!!!!!!!!! also don't allow people to smoke in your house or car. you can also start walking to get your mind off of the cigaretts.
