I own a couple of UPS Stores and we always try send care packages on the house for US & Canadian soldiers. We actually don't send them overseas, we just get them to whatever base (ASAP) and then they ship it out with the rest of the mail going over there. I have friends and family over there, so i figure it's the very least I could do.

I kinda feel like I'm helping or making it a little better for people like this: (BTW, this photo is unbelievably touching. My, umm, "allergies" flared up a bit when I saw it.)

This is not a test nor is it all that serious...just some things I've seen in the last week or so (that I don't want to talk about just yet) got me thinking.

Great poll Ms Rheda!!! Everyone has some sort of problem or hardship in their lives. Lord only knows what i've dealt with, over came, and am dealing with now. The most important thing to remember is that there is always someone out there that has it tougher, that has bigger problems than you. A small gesture of kindness can brighten the lives of others more than you know, and can lead to a ripple effect.

I help others however I can, and sometimes I end up too busy to help anyone, which really aggravates me. I have my share of problems, but who doesn't. If you take time to count the blessing you have, you soon realize you have a lot more than you ever thought. Other than the way I massacre the English language, I really ain't got it so bad.... good poll, Rheda... I'm feeling all warm and fuzzy, just in time for the weekend. BTW, I think I hurt something trying to read that pic with the words on it.

I worked in a nursing home when  was 16 and a Viet Nam vet was in there and was paralyzed from the Neck down. He had no family left and he told me that for Christmas he wanted a Shot of Jack Daniels and a couple of puffs of a special type of cigarette. I smuggled it in for him, whats the worst they could do to me I was only 16 fire Me.

In the past year, we have sent small donations to various organizations... Make-A-Wish (there is a local group with a different name but I can't think of it right now...) The U.S. Navy Veterans Assn., about three different police groups, firefighter's organizations, etc. We also donate occasionally to Save-A-Child, which feeds and clothes people of all ages in the local area. Sometimes I feel like it's not enough, but I know that every little bit accumulates.

My husband helped a young couple about two months ago when they presented rolls of pennies and miscellaneous coins as payment for gas for their car. He watched as they pumped about $2-3 of gas into their tiny car. He stopped his pump and handed it to the young man so he could use the rest of the pre-paid amount. The young man expressed his gratitude, and I am sure he will pay it forward someday!

We might not always be able to do much, but the person who doesn't have ANYTHING will surely appreciate that small gesture!

America was built on helping your neighbor and looking out for each other. When we delegate this responsibility to the government, then it ultimately fails.

Everyone should be looking to know and help your neighbor when in need.

I actually signed up yesterday as a volunteer for an organization called There With Care that helps families of children with life threatening illnesses at the Childrens Hospital.  Helping them with everyday things and tasks that others think of as mundane, but can build up when you have a lot on your plate

I could not pick just one of the things that I would do to help someone so I chose other.  I would do anything within my means to help a person less fortunate than me or who truly deserves it.  When I help someone it makes me feel like a better person.  With the Christmas season approaching I hope every one stops and counts their blessings.  This has been a very hard year for my family as far as sickness with my mother and financial matters.  Still I know a lot of people are a lot worse off!  I thank GOD every day for all of the blessings that he gives me and my family!

Excellent poll, Rheda!  My biggest stress was trying to finish a paper that was due for class today that I procrastinated with and didn't start until last night.  That is nothing compared to what you're dealing with.

I went to Indonesia to help the kids recover from the Tsunami 4 years ago, and been to Romania 3 times building orphanages. What I do daily for others, is between me and GOD and those I help. BUT I always give the credit to JESUS when they thank me.

I've done a lot of what ever one has.  I've sent packages weekly during Desert Storm (my brother was there and my inspiration), bought groceries for strangers, bought gas for strangers, gave things to a new neighbor who had nothing (I knew her and didn't like her but knew she needed the basics), volunteered in my early life in nursing homes and hospitals. I now live way out in the country so the opportunities aren't there. I do help out my elderly neighbors (fight over them paying me hee hee) but we work it out.  I was raised to help people.  There have been those who have helped me out when I was down and out and I hope that if that ever happens again (please don't let it) that someone would be there to lend me a hand.  I've been battling a cold/flu lately plus the money pinch everyone experiences.  I hope to find a job in the near future, there just isn't much available around here.  Wish me luck!

My pressing issues yesterday was, my honey had two drs  appointments and we had two the day before.  That is  pretty stressful for me.
I was raised  that you only get back what you give away.
I give to charities.
I don't know anybody personally that is in real need.
God has blessed me.

Rheda, I am a Punjabi by caste and I go to worship in the Gurudwara - our Temple of Worship.

Punjabi people have been taught by our Gurus (Saints) to do "Kar Seva".  Kar Seva is doing work selflessly and without shame or fear and for a noble cause and for humanity usually.  We may be rich or poor, all are openly welcome in our Gurudwaras - be thy of any caste or creed.

As part of Kar Seva, people put the footwear of other pilgrims to the Gurudwara in proper order and uniformly.  They don't see whose slippers or shoes they may be.  They touch under these footwear with their hands while putting them in order and neatly in pairs because our Gurus had told us that 'Who knows you may have hurt one of them unknowingly or even deliberately sometime somewhere - and what better way to ask for forgiveness than this anonymous way.

In doing Kar Seva, the pilgrims help in cooking the langars (common meals for all) which are provided from the funds and items donated to the Gurudwaras.  They even wash the vessels and plates used by other pilgrims to eat the langar and throw the leftovers without feeling shy.   They wash and keep the Langar Halls clean and hygienic for the next time usage.

Kar Seva includes so many labour works -  the list is endless.  In short, all works are done that need to be done to show one's affection to the teachings of our Gurus.

I would definitely advice you to pay a visit to our Golden Temple at Amritsar and Sach Khand Hazoor Sahib Gurudwara at Nanded, both in India to practically see for yourselves what alI takes place here and in all other Gurudwaras.  Mind you, no one is interested in what you donate, or whether you donate or not.  You will be allowed all the facilities that the Gurudwaras have to offer.

And I have been doing Kar Seva all my life.  It is because of this practice from my early days that I have developed myself into a person who - when I decide once every year to go to the Blind School in my local city - likes to donate not in cash but in kind, and usually food stuff and sweets, and I do not just leave it on the management of the School to distribute them, but I take my family members all with me and with our own hands feed them.  I have seen the blind cry with happiness for when questioned, they answer that very few people feed them in this way and they know the difference because they do not get such pure and fresh food from the management - as they are served only adulterated food.

I do not expect any returns for it from any quarters - not even from the Almighty - for this service of mine as I do it for my self satisfaction and not for personal or future gains or name.  I do not even give my name in the donors list.

I really would wish many of our Q fans to follow some similar example and see for themselves the happines derived from such a humane service.

God Bless everyone !

in the sixtiies my oldest brother went to Vietnam and came back thankfully witht all that he went over with, but we would send a box the size of a huge tv full of socks playing cards puzzle books candys cookies and anything that he would tell us that they had trouble getting over there and every month for a year and a half my family did that, my wifes nephew just returned from Iraq where for a year we did the same with him and his buddies, it wasnt alot but once a month we would gather all the lottery tickets we had won less than $10 and we would spend that on the gift box......they enjoyed it just like my brother and his pals did inthe sixties and it gave my sons a lesson on giving back to soceity..........

GREAT poll-- I'd been seeing the title for a while now but never clicked on it. I don't do nearly enough for those less fortunate than me. We are a family of six living on about $70,000 a year-- that would be considered little by many of the people we know, but a fortune to some others. I try to do "random acts of kindness" even if it's as simple as leaving my change behind in the vending machine, and when I went to school downtown I would sometimes offer to by beggars food rather than just give them money. I also try to raise awareness with my students of other children in the world in dire situations. We've had "Change for Change" drives where just by collecting pennies and selling bracelets we've raised enough money to build a school in Uganda for children who had been kidnapped and forced into being soldiers. I'd like to do a lot more personally, be it from working in a soup kitchen to reading to the elderly, we all have the time to do it if we make it a priority to do so.
