Here come the Pens, winning some games and showing adversity while doing it!  I gotta give credit to Sabourin as well, he's stepped up in Fleury's absence.

The way the Kings are playing, I'd be happy to get two games where they actually play with the same intensity even if they don't get the wins. Despite their inconsistent play they aren't that far back. Now if the pricey "veterans" could step up and contribute a little, maybe they could get a win streak going. Over 50% of the Kings goals have been scored by Brown, Kopitar, and Cammy so far. They need the veterans to start earning their paychecks.

The Sharks are finally getting some win streaks under the belt and Thornton looks like he is on his way to another MVP season. Just wish Cheechoo would join in on the scoring. Penalty kill is top in the league. Overall I'm impressed with their performance, except when it comes to their record at the Tank.

I was going to put the Sharks higher until they got blown out 7-1 against Buffalo. Same old Sharks..they still play too many games where they just don't show up???

There's a lot of variables to consider. They aren't doing horrible. Every team has "one of those days." Top 10 in the league is doing pretty good if you ask me. They started slow, but they still continue to gain ground. It's not like they have a 7-1 night all the time. Nabokov is like in the top 3 goalies right now in my opinion and a highly improved defence from last season. They are still getting better every game, despite the bad loss here and there. With every mistake, there is a lesson to be learned.

This is the first week in a while that I have put them in the top 10.  They HAVE been playing better.  Goals are still way too rare.  Seems to me that if someone could pick up just a little bit of the goal scoring slack they would become a real force.

The Sharks (and Bruins) had a bit of a jump this week to compensate for dropping them last week because they only played one game.  Despite the 7-1 beatdown, the sharks have one of the better records in the nhl still.  San Jose had played the night before while Buffalo was sitting there waiting to avenge its 8-2 loss to LA.  Buffalo had to come out strong. It happens, I will not keep them there if they do it again tho.

I don't think the Devils deserve to be in the top 10.  Their 9 game winning streak came against crummy teams.  And then last night they lost to Washington.

I don't think there's much of a way you can say the Wings aren't the top team

When I evaluate the teams, I pretty much consider shootouts as ties.  Which makes the Devils 15-12-2.  That combined with the recent streak of good play in my mind puts them at #8.

I sorta kinda agree with the shootouts. I like that there aren't ties anymore, but I do happen to think shootouts occur way to often. It takes the excitement out of it if you see it all the time. 10-20 minutes OT and then SO would work better in my opinion. 5 minutes of OT is just not enough to seal the deal considering most OT games in the league end in a SO. That's not really my idea of a fair and square victory.

I never had a problem with the ties.  I don't know why people are so bothered by it.

You don't get ties in the playoffs.  Where you REALLY need winners and losers.  But the regular season?  It's pretty meaningless as it is.  Who cares if there are ties?

And then to do this ridiculous thing where games can be worth 3 points sometimes and 2 points at others.  What's up with that?  If an OT win goes in the win column, then why don't OT losses go in the loss column?  This makes not sense to me.  All this silly format does is make teams APPEAR like they have a better record than they really do.

I was thinking, if you have OT wins, SO wins OT Losses and SO losses, then make the points work that way.  Make wins worth 5 points.  OT wins 4 points.  SO wins 3 points.  SO losses 2 points.  OT losses 1 point.  And zero for a straight loss.  This would reflect how the teams are playing better.  And it can't more complicated that the silly system in place today....

If everything had its own column it would have an absurd record like this: 10-2-4-3-1-4 which doesn't make any sense. All SO and OT losses should go in the loss column and count the same as a regulation loss, because you LOST. I don't understand what the big deal is. In the NFL they don't make an extra column for OTL. The only reason they put a third column is for ties which is very rare in the NFL. If only the NHL would follow suit.

Having a record of 12-1-2-0-2-6 is no more silly than including GF, GA and other team stats in the standings.  And it makes a lot more sense than having the record be 15-6-2.  You have no idea exactly what those last two points are.  OT losses?  SO losses?  How many of the 15 wins were regulation?  How many were SO wins?  It really tells you very little about how the team has truly performed.

But, owners seem to like things that make their teams more attractive.  A record of 49-24-9 looks a lot better than 49-30-3.
