The Best Hitter & Pitcher Right Now
The background for this question is this:
If you were the GM of your favorite MLB team for 1 year, what 1 hitter and what 1 starting pitcher would you build your roster around?  Keep in mind that you have just 1 year to win it all, you are not building a dynasty right now, you are simply picking the best hitter and best pitcher for the 2009 season.  Age shouldn't play into your choice since you only have these guys for one year.

+1 thumbs upI'm biased cuz I'm a Giants fan on both my picks.  I'm scared of Manny on the Dodgers and pretty much think Lincecum is the best Giants pitcher in my lifetime.

Good for you. The only difference is I claimed Lincecum would win the Cy Young about a year ago.

And I claimed the Phillies would win the World Series this Spring too.  I'd rather get my World Series pick right rather than a Cy young award pick.

I really did, but I am a Phillies fan.  But I just had a strong feeling we'd go far this year.  I went to Spring Training for the 1st time, and comin off the '07 division win, so we had playoff experience. I knew if they could get in the Playoffs, they would go all the way.

I had a feeling the Phillies would do big things this year as well. That lineup is too stacked.

Just a quick one here. Why would you not factor in Evan Longoria in the mix?

Morneau can slap yo' momma into the gap just to drive-in some runs. He makes that team have flashbacks of Puckett for 1/4 of his contract. Halladay can be cloned and pitch everyday, but would lose the Cy Young because he would be his own worst competition.

True, it's hard to vote against Pujols when it comes to batting and Webb and Sabathia are two of the best pitchers of this generation.  Lincecum still has a lot to prove.

Cy Young Award wasn't enough either? What do you people want from him?
+1 thumbs upI think, like all others, we want him to do well for more than one season in a row.  We tried to build a team around Mark Prior for a while....he had a couple years, but that didn't quite work out.

You want a couple successful years before building around a starter....Webb's had that.

+1 thumbs upWhile I hate to go into a battle of wits against an unarmed man....here, in fact, is the comparison of each pitcher's second season:

Lincecum:
SEASON TEAM W L ERA G GS CG SHO SV SVO IP H R ER HR HBP BB SO
2008     San Francisco Giants 18 5 2.62 34 33 2 1 0 0 227.0 182 72 66 11 6 84 265
Prior:
2003     Chicago Cubs              18 6 2.43 30 30 3 1 0 0 211.1 183 67 57 15 9 50 245

Prior didn't win the Cy Young because the other pitchers were more competitive in 2003....not so much this year.  Prior's ERA was better, same # of wins, more complete games, less walks..... Lincecum better in innings pitched, HRs allowed, strikeouts.  Seem pretty much comparable.
We'll see if Lincecum is any better in the long term.

Thanks for your insightful input, though.

+1 thumbs up You want some insightful input? Very well. You asked for it.

Mark Prior is one of the biggest jokes in the history of Major League Baseball. You even mentioning Tim Lincecum in the same sentence as him is an absolute disgrace.

Tim in his second year, won the Cy Young Award. Prior has been battling to stay off the Disabled List for what? 7 years now? Are you out of your freakin head? Where are these kids coming from?

You really have a lot of nerve trying to tax Lincecum and compare him to a debacle of a loser like Mark Prior just because Lincecum has only been in the Major Leagues for not even two full seasons.

But hey, I guess it takes a certain amount of insanity to be a Cubs fan to begin with.

+1 thumbs upI didn't "tax Lincecum."  I didn't even say anything bad about him at all.  I just pointed out that his stats are comparable to Prior's at the same point in their careers.
I really do hope Lincecum fares better.

+1 thumbs upHow can you say Tim Lincecum won't be on the DL in a couple of years?  He could injure his elbow and his career will be shot.  He compared Prior's 2nd season, just like Lincecum and they were comparable.  Tim Lincecum is really good, but there are other pitchers I would take over him right now.

+1 thumbs up You can take whoever you like.

I'll take the kid who made a mockery of big league hitters at the age of 24, who people love to hate on because they are unable to understand that Lincecum is simply a freak of nature.

For some reason the laws of physics almost don't seem to apply for Lincecum. His front side stays square to the target until the absolute last possible second, and he has the longest stride of possibly any major league pitcher in history.

What he does, noone else can do. His arm will be fine.

+1 thumbs upAnd your obvious bias, being a Giants fan, isn't shining through.  Most went into this poll with an open mind, chose the best pitcher with more than one season under their belt.  Lincecum had a great season, most of the others have done it for more than one year.  If he is still doing the same thing three years from now, I'm sure most would pick him.  History usually shows that the "new" thing is figured out and major league hitter figure him out and exploit.  I hope that doesn't happen.

Responding childishly to everyone who doesn't agree isn't becoming, unless, of course, you are a child.  Sorry I never grew up.

while i will admit that i may be bias towards the giants as i am a giants fan. I have to agree with bookie buster.. While Prior and Lincecum did have similar second seasons in the big leagues, I do not believe that Lincecum will suffer the same dismal fate as Prior did. First of all their mechanics are nothing alike, Lincecum throws with is body and hips which allows him to put more velocity and break on his pitches then is imaginable for a pitcher his size.. His mechanics also put the least amount of stress on his arm, compared to any other MLB pitcher. While I am not all that familiar with Priors pitching mechanics before he suffered his injuries, from the video that I have watched of Prior I see that he throws mostly with his arm.. He doesn't rotate his hips to add velocity, instead he strides straight to his target and gains velocity through arm speed. This puts tremendous stress on his arm which often leads to injury..

That being said.. if you dont belive me when I say that Lincecum will be dominate in years to come. Then you need to watch some video of when he is throwing the ball well.. And see what a mockery he makes of even the biggest and baddest major league hitters.

And at least we are all in agreement that Pujols is the best hitter in the MLB.
