There are drivers who may drive faster, may be better at overtaking or in wet, but there was no one who had the required amount of all these plus strategic acumen, who could do it day in and day out on every track, in every weather, in different cars year after year.

Wow! I must be the only one who disagrees here. I am not denying he is one of the all-time greats - his record spreaks for itself - But to call him the best ever? No. I don´t think so. People forget some of the past drivers in history. Fangio, and Clark are for me the best drivers ever. Reason? because they were not just racing drivers, they were gentlemen, and sportsmen. And were still very successful.  Just remember Clarks record; he only drove 72 races in his career, but won 25 of them. He drove for one team only regardless of if it was good or not. He could drive anything with four wheels better and faster than anyone else. He didn´t need to set-up a car, he just went out and drove it. He was so naturally talented that he couldn´t explain how he did it. Although Schumacher comes close, he´s no "Sportsman" He has natural talent, but has to have a decent set-up, which he is good at.

What Schumacher is. Is the most successful, but NOT the best.

Wow!.... what was that .... i think u are still at old times...where cars were not complicated like todays.... to drive it naturally.... Todays F1 cars are not like rally cars... a small mistake by drivers screws the car.. and drivers input helps creating a great car... and ferrari is today the biggest sportscar brand name... and schumacher is the person who played a big role in creating that brand name. before 1997 the brand ferrari was nothing.... consecutive wins at formula1 created the craze for the brand ferrari.

Not really, you must be a youngster. Ferrari was a highly regarded sportscar brand long before Schumacher was even born.

Ferrari started out as a racing car manufacturer, then expanded into making sports cars. Ferrari have been a successful company with ups and downs before Schumacher.  Schumacher´s legacy was to turn around the team in 1997 thats true, but to say he made Ferrari a successful sports car brand is ridiculous.
The sports car brand became successful when they started winning at the 24 hrs of Le Mans, that is where they really became the prestige marque they are today.

Oh yes, before I forget. The comparisons you make on cars of different eras is interesting but difficult. Todays cars are super safe, the tracks are super safe. If you made a small mistake in the old days you were DEAD. The demands on a modern driver are more physically than they were, but the skills to drive the ultimate are still the same. If a driver makes a small mistake now he just shakes his head and gets back on  with the job. Its so safe now you can crash a car on purpose to gain an advantage for your team mate (Nelsinho-Singapore). Or crash into your rival to try and win a championship (Senna/Prost, Schumacher/Hill, Schumacher/Villeneuve) Its the sportsmanship whats missing now.

Richard..it's nice to know there is someone else visiting these pages who has keen knowlege of the sport going back to the days of  JMF, Stirling, Nuvolari et al. Michael admits it would be a colossal struggle to find himself on the grid, in a car of the period, among the greats of the 'Golden Era'. Schumi has often declared that he pales in comparison to JMF.

you seem to forget that the eras are completely different. technology is developing more and more rapidly. v difficult to keep current with tech and master it to the max. who knows? the oldies could have been duds in today's times and the other way around too. dont think we should compare people from different eras. give them the respect due to them in their times and get on with it. f1 is a great sport. enjoy seeing the best of people at present.

Unfortunately this season, he is really struggling with so much of unlucky in both Bahrain and Australian GPs...I was hoping for a sensational victory during the Aus GP, which was sort of blessing in disguise for our 'Rain Master', but the incident involving 'Cry Baby' Alonso spoiled Schumi's chances..otherwise we could have got the treat to our eyes of superlative driving from the master. As suggested by Niki Lauda...may be..after Malaysian GP he shud be at his best to challenge for the championship and make it 8 championship and counting...There is  no doubt that leaving aside some patchy controversies in his career, he certainly the best driver of all time..his hold of virtually all records in F1, simply amplifies the kind of driver he is...

However..comparing some of the greats who were virtually driving a death race in those days without any safety and technology, some great drivers like Fangio, Stirling, etc were really phenomenal with their achievements..even Schumi cudn't have achieved in a consistent basis what he had achieved and no one can deny the fact that he was the darling of Ferrari and he cud dominate mainly due to some 'team orders' ... Although..i personally like Schumi very much...but he might not be crowned as the BEST, but he certainly is the best in his time..
