Turbulence Ahead!
In two weeks, I will be facing one of my biggest fears... FLYING!

And it's by choice! ((What was I thinking???)) A friend offered me a ticket to see the Steelers and who am I to turn it down?

Anyway, as the day approaches, I find myself having bad dreams about flying, worrying that my flight is on Friday the 13th, and wondering why I didn't just tell her to give the ticket to someone else? How about the fact that illnesses like the flu and the dreaded swine flu run rampant in airports and especially in airplanes. (No worries, I already bought a box of face masks!) I have mixed feelings of both excitement for the weekend and fear of all the things that go along with flying... especially by myself!!

So I'm asking anyone who IS NOT afraid of flying to answer this poll. PLEASE DO NOT ADD TO MY STRESS LEVEL BY POSTING HORROR STORIES OR REASONS WHY YOU WON'T FLY!

Tell me why you are not afraid to fly. Happy stories are welcome! Ways of coping are encouraged! And words of wisdom are greatly appreciated!

it's all about the bernoulli principle baby! i've attached a chart that makes me yawn just looking at it, but it may clear things up for you. thing is, it's not scary, and it's when you land, you'll feel silly you ever got nervous.

Have you ever flown before? I don't love to fly, but I love to travel, so to me it's a necessity, especially when you want to be at your destination in a relatively short period of time.

Stay hydrated, relax, don't let the weird sounds coming from the plane freak you out, and you'll be just fine!

Flying is fun... When you take off it feels like you are in a car going realy realy fast then like a rocket taking off in outer space. Then it can be like your disoriented on drugs and float back and forth, and your airs pop.. Good time to take a nap. When you land it feels like your're going down a rollercoaster nad then you touch down on pavement and you have a flat tire.  ...Flying is fun

The words aren't very legible, so it almost looks like an instructional on the dynamics of sex... in a weird way. And somewhere near the bottom is a word that looks like it reads f*rnication... not sure if that had to be edited, but I figured I'd save the mods the trouble!

Thanks for that, Leigh! I'll read it on the flight... it might take me that long to figure it out!

take an ipod, book, something to not think about it.

And i would tell you why I'm not afraid to fly, but it would probably scare you.

I wouldn`t worry unless the pilot walks by you with a laptop in his arms. In that case you might want to go up and tap on the cockpit door and let them know when they are getting close to your destination.

I don't think you should fly. DON'T FLY AT ALL.

Just tell your friend to give the ticket to someone who deserves it. Like the #1 Steelers fan on the Q.

Hey, that's me! I can even drive to the Steelers game.

I'll pm you my phone number, so when you get to the airport and chicken out, then at least call me so the ticket doesn't go to waste. I can be there in 3 hours. 2 hours if I need to.
I love to fly!!

Given that you're flying on the 13th means that you're not flying to Denver to see the game here on the 9th, I no longer have interest in commenting.

Aw c'mon Leslie, there's nothing to be afraid of. I don't like heights but being in an enclosed vehicle makes it totally different for me. Everyone says that statistically speaking, flying is much safer than driving, and I'm sure the statistics are really there to prove it and I'm sure I'm not going to take the time to look them up right now. Just take a deep breath, chew some gum, read a trashy romance novel, and think about all your Q friends who wish you were coming to visit them.

This chart is all well and good, except for the last section about turbulence, on the last bullet point... "This formation of turbulence can cause an airplane to "stall" and fall out of the sky..."

Leslie, once you get in the plane you will be nervous. But I"ll bet that once you start to taxi you'll be just fine. It really is pretty cool. I love taking off its almost a rush. And you know looking out the window its almost breathtaking. So my advice take a valium or a xanax (seriously) let it work and sit back and enjoy. Have fun at the game.

Friday the 13th???? OH you're screwed. Hopefully these aren't your pilots. I LOVE flying though, it's so much fun and you just get hammered before you leave and/or take a flask with you.

#30 | 26 days ago

Keep reminding yourself how long it would take to drive to the game.

A buddy of mine was on a flight where one of the passengers was another pilot. Later in the flight, he said they experienced violent turbulence. My buddy was turning white and saying his prayers until he looked over at the pilot. He was sawing logs in his seat. Since he told me that story, I don't have any worries when flying. Those planes are made to take a beating in the air.

Girl you will be fine. The bottom line for me was this ( I dont care for flying either) If God says it's  time to go, it doesnt matter if you're  flying or walking across a street.
You will be fine. God would never take you before you got to see Big Ben play, and make it back with my terrible towel, and all the kool pics!

Go to the lounge, have a nice soothing beverage, get on the plane, listen to the safety stuff, plug in your IPOD, pull out a trashy novel, and before you know it, you'll be landing in black and gold territory!

I know you will be ok, my first flight was over seas 15 hour ride and I waited  to aboard the plane  sweating bullets but once we  was in the air  I was fine well once i got off that dang small plane and got on a bigger one , that small one was to rocky for me dang air pockets, the plane left Nashville was the small one and got on a bigger one in Ohio and then a bigger one in NY and that was it. had to wait 3 hours in NY before we took off again and of course I got in margaritaville   I was overseas when WTC got hit and I was not afraid when I flew back to the states so I'm  sure you will  be fine  just like I was. I felt the same way you did  before that. well I hope I helped

Leslie,  like you, I was a bit afraid of flying (OK, a lot).  Don't like heights when I am somehow connected to the ground, like a building, let alone in a plane.  But a few years ago I had to fly to pick up my son who was traveling with relatives in Mexico City.  I took a couple of books ( had been reading 1st one and was near end.)   The 3 hour flight was very much like riding in a bus.  What little turbulence we encountered felt just like a rough patch of road.  I even had a window seat, and watched the take-off.  The flight back was also good, I slept through most of it.  (I had stayed up all night, only staying in Mexico City airport for about 5 hours from landing to returning home.)

You have your gum, mp3 player, and your flask.  All you need to do is relax, and keep an eye on the flight attendants.  If they aren't flinching at anything, you shouldn't worry.  Have a great trip, and enjoy the game.
I don't worry about things that are out of my control.

I was like you, scared to death of flying but i took my first plane trip in June and i am 68 yrs old.  I am scared of heights but being in the plane and looking at the ground didn't bother me a bit.  I say get a window seat if you can.  I loved looking out the window.  I had a book but didn't bother reading, too much going on around me.  They will be around with peanuts, cookies and sodas and drinks for sale but i think the drinks are very high priced.  If this is your first trip you will love it.  I traveled alone also, i think it would have been fun if i had of had a traveling companion.  The chewing gum is a must.
Take these precautions...

I like flying, it's way quicker to get where you going for say leaving the state or vaction. I drove cross country last summer and it suck. I was moving though but it made a good road trip partying in different cities. I'd rather fly anyday, I think you should go on the flight.

Let's forget about the mile high club for a while, since Leslie has enough fears about just getting on the plane.  Plus it has nothing to do with the original question, and thread hijacking is something we try to limit around here.

Leslie,  I guarantee you will have a great flight, probably a Great time at the game (steeler loss being the exception), and when you are back home you'll wonder why you were scared in the first place.

Thanks Dave... and I don't mind that the thread went off-topic. ((Let's not use the word hijacked here, k?))

I have flown 3 times in the last 16 years. The anxiety leading up to takeoff can be unbearable for me. It is a little worse this time because this trip is by choice... not like the work conferences that I have been required to attend in the past. My fear of heights is not just limited to airplanes... Ferris wheels, tall buildings, and even ladders are on the list!

A couple people have e-mailed me privately, saying they have flown for years and never had any issues. Plus, this is generally a short flight so there will be very little time between stops to even listen to a full-length CD that I've downloaded. Everyone's comments have been very reassuring and I appreciate you all... thank you!!

My apologies Leslie, my comment was an attempt to use humor to help ease your stress.  It caused the thread to go off topic, which I didn't intend to do.

The first time I flew I was 18, flying from Omaha to Chicago on my way to basic training.  I was anxious for a number of reasons, flying the main one.  I remember the take off like it was yesterday.  It was quite a thrill.  I still get a little nervous when I fly today, so it's normal to feel stress.  As many have already said, it's a very safe way to travel, and it'll be over in no time.

Definitely just bring something you like to do; I always bring my iPod and my Nintendo DS. Maybe even take a camera so you can take pics if you get a window seat. That will distract you (ever notice how when you're taking pictures at a party or of your kid's school play, you miss most of what's going on around you?).

The only thing I DON'T like about flying is that I'm that person who always gets to sit by the crazy people (last time it was a rambling alcoholic reeking of alcohol at 7am), or they target me while we wait to board. I'm so busy ignoring them that I don't have time to worry about what else is going on.

Your dreams are just your subconscious messing with you because you're nervous.

When i first read what the poll was about i was thinking.....take a few Xanax and sit back and enjoy.........me and my woman are always thinking.

buy some earplugs and a good book and after they go over the safety data, put your earplugs and start reading. just try to think of the look of your friend when you arrive and are not freaking out over what should be a nice experience.........
