Too old to trick-or-treat?
Our 17-year-old daughter is going with a group of her friends to trick-or-treat tonight in my mother-in-law's neighborhood. I somewhat disapprove of this and don't really feel teenagers should be going door-to-door asking for candy, but my wife disagrees and says that until they graduate high school, they should take every last chance to "be kids" that they can. Although I did go at that age a couple of times, I also remember that when I was a younger kid, the teenagers out on the street on Halloween night intimidated me and my friends, and could often be obnoxious.

Do you think there should be an age limit for trick-or-treaters?

HATE when older kids trick or treat.....although my friends and I drunk and treat.
#2 | 22 days ago

12 should be the cut off, but all my kids are under that age, so my opinion may change as they get older.

Actually, Becky, I agree-- if they're polite and respectful I really have no problem with it. The problem is they usually aren't, and the older they get, the less polite they tend to be.

I'm actually part of the older crowd. While we normally have a party, we usually hand out goodies to the kids and adults too. In our neighborhood, the kids get candy and their attendant parents also can have a shot of their favorite libation (about 1/3 of the houses in our neighborhood offer shots to the parents) as well. By the end of the evening, most of the parents are feeling real good...

Can't wait for tonight!!!!

Hey...we tend to get some colder weather on Halloween...nothing wrong with a little "anti-freeze"...

#12 | 22 days ago

We're going with my daughter and her two friends from school ... we go to the Old Northeast section of St Petersburg and they really go all out.  It's always a lot of fun.

Happy Halloween Everyone!

My son is 13 and this is his first year not going.  He was a little hesitant about it last year.  Our town has a curfew set for the trick or treaters.  Personally, I think it is more for the younger ones to go door to door.  There are usually a lot of Churches and School that have carnivals for the older kids.

I like it when the high school girls trick or treat... they wear "interesting" costumes.

...and when i say that i mean the 18 year old seniors...ofcourse!
#16 | 22 days ago

My son is 12 and he's still going.  I was in 7th grade the last time I went.  The last time I wanted to go was 8th grade, but I couldn't.  Why you'd want to go get candy in High School is beyond me, isn't there a cool party you can go to?

Perv. I always had my suspicions about Mr. Rogers and that little "Kingdom of Make-Believe"-- now we all know where Michael Jackson got his inspiration.

That being said, there's a reason I don't teach high school.

#20 | 22 days ago

well as long as they are wearing a costume they should be able to enjoy being a kid, but when the kids are just in regular clothes that is when i would cut it off,but in the part of town i live in if you told those that didnt dress up that they wrong, you could be on the list for a drive  by later on inthe night......it sucks that some troublemakers ruin it for the ones just enjoying themselves...i had one group come by and the oldest one looked to be at least 21 or so....

I really think the age limit should be left up to parents, guardians or whoever has the children on that night. I do however think it should be for children that can eat the candy, also for those who are not drinking, doing drugs or any other mood altering stuff. Wooohoooo Game is starting!

Was actually just discussing this very topic with my son tonight. My 11 yr old son is about 5'9" and about 220.....  I told him that this year would probably be his last.... and he was upset about it. Sure enough, as I am taking the kids around, one guy says, very rudely i might add..."Thought there was an age limit on this"..... and my son, i love him, said, "I am sorry sir, but i AM only 11, just ask my mom." Sad thing, his friend that he brought with is 13, and smaller then him. I guess my opinion is that the whole idea of trick or treating is for kids, but I do say once they hit 13 they need to start planning some halloween parties, or something along those lines. Leave the trick or treating for the littler kids. As I told my son, I will let him spend up to five dollars on his own bag of candy next year. That seemed to be ok.

It was a little busier this year for us with older kids, but there was a free fireworks show just up the block, so kids and parents came from the neighboring communities (we have a bunch of them around us, we're all 100-300 strong) and we had coffee and bailies for the adults and handouts for the kids.  We didn't run out of either, but came closer than we have in a few years.  The temp was +2C or about 35F and the fireworks ROCKED!  I'm with HB, great time was had by all!

Oh and normally the kids around here just quit on their own around 12, but occastionally some of the older kids will show up.  99% of the time, they are kids we know well, and they are polite and no problem.  Once or twice a few years ago, when we were running out of candy, we told the kids that, and they wouldn't take any, they said they were just doing it for the fun, not the candy.  Now most of them dress up and do the handing out, then maybe go out for a bit at the end of the night.  That way, if you are out of candy, you can turn out your outside light and the kids won't come to the door.

Seeing that you live in New Jersey............. I'm not going to say what I was going to say.

Anyone from Jr High or above should NOT be trick or treating.  Those kids need to be out playing pranks or at parties.

The flip side is that no parent should go trick or treating with their INFANTS.  If the kid can't walk up to the door on their own, they are too young.

Trick or treating is a kids thing.  Not a teenagers thing.
