Wrestlings greatests champs? (Edited 05/22/07 03:10PM by Seth)
News:

When you think of the sport of wrestling you either think of WWE or Olympics.  Which brings me to this question.  Who is the greatest champion in each style?  Is it longevity or is it being an underdog defying all odds?

Here is a quick Bio on both styles to help you answer the question below:

US OLYMPIC:

Wrestlings greatests champs? <span style="font-size:12px;">(Edited 05/22/07 03:10PM by Seth)</span> PhotoRulon Gardner- defeated Alexander Karelin, a three time Olympic champion, hadn't lost a match in 13 years, hadn't lost a point in a decade.  This win is called the "Miracle on the Mat".  He also won a Bronze in 2004.

Cael Sanderson- Four-time high school champion. Four-time NCAA champion at Iowa State and Olympic Champion.  He is also the only undefeated four time NCAA champion.

Steve Fraser - The first U.S. Olympic gold medal winner in 1984 and All American wrestler at Michigan.  Fraser has served as coach of the US Greco Roman team since 1997.  Rulon Gardner credits Fraser's instruction as a large part of his wrestling success.

Kurt Angle - Angle captured the gold medal in freestyle wrestling at the 1996 Olympic Games.  He also was a six time WWE champion as well.  As an ameteur he won 2 NCAA titles and he won a gold medal at the World Championships in Atlanta.

WWE:

Wrestlings greatests champs? <span style="font-size:12px;">(Edited 05/22/07 03:10PM by Seth)</span> PhotoBob Backlund-
WWE champion for just under six years from 2/78 to 12/83 (2,135 days).  Backlund's second reign,  lasted a mere three days in November 1994.

Hulk Hogan - WWE champion for four straight years from 1/84 to 2/88 (1,474 days).  The Hulkster has won the WWE and WCW Championships an unprecedented six times each, with a near 20-year span between his first and last title victory. He has also held the World Tag Team Championship with Edge, and won back-to-back Royal Rumbles in 1990 and 1991.

Bruno Sammartino- Bruno had two long title runs.  He also has the record for the longest reigning  WWE champion as well.  From 5/63 to 1/71 a record 2,803 days and from 12/73 to 4/77 1,237 days which earned him the nickname the "Italian Superman"

Fabulous Moolah - Moolah was the Womens champion almost 28 years.  From 9/56 to 7/84 she held the title like no other ever has.  A champion from the 50's to the 80's!

The 16 time heavyweight Champion is a great pick.  I left him off the list because he never had a long title run like the others did.

Flair was a better technical wrestler than Hogan but he wasn't a better champion.
1. Cael Sanderson  2. Hulk Hogan

While not being a real fan of Hogan's, I believe by charisma, he was the best on that list...

Hate to say it, but wrestling wouldn't be where it is today without Hogan, I give him credit for that... ask even non-fans of wrestling who Hogan is, and they can answer correctly!

My fav champ of all-time Bret Hart, he's the reason I started watching wrestling!

Ric Flair by leaps and bounds over anyone mentioned.

And that's supposed to be other, not Moolah.   Moolah btw, lost the title on 3 occassions during her reign.  However, she actually owned the title and did what she wanted with it, but her title changes were not recognized by the WWWF/WWF.

fro Sept of 1984 until july of 91 Flair was never without his belt for longer than 3 months. He had two title reigns of two years in legnth. He comletely dominated the 80's as world heavyweight champion. What do you mean he didn't have a long title reign?

and that why WWE had him lose the belt to Kevin Nash in 8 seconds.

What is the longest he ever went without cheating to win a match?  Or had the other horsemen take out his rivals?

The fact that you have ANYTHING negative to say about the excellence of execution, a wrestler who could succeed in the "80's" style and then come back and form the "New" Hart Foundation with his in laws during the 90's wrestling boom and come off as credible and successful in both eras, shows your lack of intellegence.

You do not know wristlock from wristwatch. Liking a punk ass like this Hart is as ignorant as it gets.

By the way, REAL hook & shoot wrestlers like Danny Hodges, Lou Thesz, Verne Gagne, Billy Robinson, Kurt Angle would twist this guy into a pretzel.

Bring any of the above mentioned dinosaurs into the old Stu Hart dungeon, and it would be THEM getting twisted into a pretzel. Bret wouldnt even have to get on his gear, Owen Hart could take care of that bunch.
