Can You Tell Me How To Get To Sesame Street
Can You Tell Me How To Get To Sesame Street Photo

Happy Birthday Sesame Street!
'Sesame Street,' the daytime staple of public television that taught the alphabet, counting and lessons about getting along, opened its 40th season Tuesday.
Jim Henson's Muppet's had their first airing as "Sesame Street" on Nov. 10, 1969, and new episodes for the 2009 season premiered Tuesday. The images of Big Bird, Oscar the Grouch, Cookie Monster, Elmo and Bert and Ernie -- Henson's homage to "It's a It's A Wonderful Life" -- are well-established as part of U.S. culture.

Part II

Following upon the heels of Jim Henson's death on 16 May 1990, rumors circulated that Ernie (one of the Sesame Street Muppet characters Henson provided the voice for) might be killed  off. Reasons given for the puppet's demise ranged from no one else being able to do the voice to this being the show's way of helping children learn to deal with death.

What do you think the best way would have been to kill off Ernie?

Ernie gets skinnier and skinnier, is forced to wear a robe at all times to keep warm and eat soup, for his fragile intestines can't handle anything more..  Since nobody wants to be around Ernie, he gets a little poodle to keep him company during the day while Burt works to pay off Ernie's growing mountain of medical bills.  Eventually all his hair falls out, and he and Burt hire Denzel Washington to be their lawyer to make sure Burt is taken care of after Ernie's battle is over..
Ernie wins an Oscar, and Burt finds a young Dominican gentleman, the end

Not Ernie! He's twice as likable as that buzz-kill Bert. Actually, that show devotes way too much time to Elmo. He's got his own show-within-the-show. That high pitched voice and the incessant giggling drive me crazy. If any muppet should be put down, it's Elmo. Maybe they'll let Oscar snap and go postal on Elmo as a way to introduce the child viewers to anger management. Maybe Snuffalupagus could accidentally step on him. I'm open to anything.

Don't let my kids know I wrote this.

I'm going to hell.

Like Van Halen fans (Hagar or Roth), I think Sesame Street viewers fall into two camps; Pre-Elmo and post-Elmo. When they added Elmo, it took some of the bloom off the rose for me. It was no longer the Sesame Street of my youth. He's trying too hard. Elmo should tone it down a notch. And, yes, I'm aware I'm referring to a puppet as if he's a real person.

You're so right man.  I'm part of the pre-elmo generation.  I think that attention grabbing wh*re Elmo ruined Sesame Street for an entire generation...

Edit:  added the smiley so people know I'm not being serious...

Send him to visit his grandma and then next week grandma needs him to stay with her and so he never comes back.  He is at grandmas and he can just fade away.

You're probably right but if he brings it down a notch I would not love him. I bought my baby an elmo live and I swear me, my sisters, and my friends play with him more than her. For us, Sesame Street would've been just okay without elmo. I just learned recently that he wasn't always a character on Sesame Street so I guess I can see your point. But that giggle is just infectious and remember, he's only 3 years old dude

Actually, when Elmo has appeared on other shows as a guest (Good Morning America, The Tonight Show) the puppeteer gives Elmo show a little personality and he's actually pretty funny. He'll tease the interviewers and smart off a little. That's good stuff.

Or Oscar the Grouch gets recruited by Radical Islamics and implements a campaign of Terror against the rich, democratic pigs who have kept him down and living in a garbage can for 40 years. He could rig garbage cans to explode and take out the entire block!

This is very wrong Gina. I got Bert & Ernie puppets one Christmas when I was little. Loved those things. Oscar was always my favorite though. He may have been partial inspiration for another staple of my childhood, Garbage Pail Kids.
But no one mentioned The Count... maybe The Count bit him.
Sesame Street is in New York City. Maybe he went to hide out in the bowels of old Yankee Stadium.
Maybe he and Bert can just live happily together forever and be advocates of gay marriage platonic male roommates. (Actually it would appear they were modeled on the The Odd Couple which would have been on TV 40 years ago).

Sesame Street remains head and shoulders above most of the current crop of kids' shows and trust me, I've seen just about all of them, from Dora to Thomas to Veggie Tales to Wonder Pets.

Ernie wanders into Sesame Street and gets hit by a bus like Wile E. Coyote.....wouldn't that traumatize the kids?
