I agree with Marcus and Stoney on this one.  It's elite ... always has been and likely always will be because that's how the system is set up (I mean c'mon, when was the last time we had a president who wasn't wealthy and successful?).  It's far from a dictatorship, though.  There are far too many democratic checks and balances in place to allow a dictatorial system to take over.  I think when the presidency and the congress is ruled by one party (with a majority), it may seem like more of a dictatorship, but remember, it's ALL comprised of ELECTED officials.

And I do have to say that President Obama has actually made great strides to ensure that it doesn't seem that way.  We all forget that often times a President can push a bill through Congress without giving any time to debate. The health care bill is a great example.  If the president wanted it in place already, it would be, through a process called Reconciliation.  This process bypasses all filibuster debate and forces a vote ... a vote that also requires LESS of a majority to pass legislation through (which the Democrats in congress could have easily attained).  He chose not to do that because he didn't want it to appear as though his leadership was dictatorial and he was trying his best to put partisanship aside as he said he wanted to do from the beginning.

Changes"

[1]
Come on come on
I see no changes wake up in the morning and I ask myself
is life worth living should I blast myself?
I'm tired of bein' poor & even worse I'm black
my stomach hurts so I'm lookin' for a purse to snatch
Cops give a damn about a negro
pull the trigger kill a nigga he's a hero
Give the crack to the kids who the hell cares
one less hungry mouth on the welfare
First ship 'em dope & let 'em deal the brothers
give 'em guns step back watch 'em kill each other
It's time to fight back that's what Huey said
2 shots in the dark now Huey's dead
I got love for my brother but we can never go nowhere
unless we share with each other
We gotta start makin' changes
learn to see me as a brother instead of 2 distant strangers
and that's how it's supposed to be
How can the Devil take a brother if he's close to me?
I'd love to go back to when we played as kids
but things changed, and that's the way it is

[Bridge w/ changing ad libs]
Come on come on
That's just the way it is
Things'll never be the same
That's just the way it is
aww yeah
[Repeat]

[2]
I see no changes all I see is racist faces
misplaced hate makes disgrace to races
We under I wonder what it takes to make this
one better place, let's erase the wasted
Take the evil out the people they'll be acting right
'cause both black and white is smokin' crack tonight
and only time we chill is when we kill each other
it takes skill to be real, time to heal each other
And although it seems heaven sent
We ain't ready, to see a black President, uhh
It ain't a secret don't conceal the fact
the penitentiary's packed, and it's filled with blacks
But some things will never change
try to show another way but you stayin' in the dope game
Now tell me what's a mother to do
bein' real don't appeal to the brother in you
You gotta operate the easy way
"I made a G today" But you made it in a sleazy way
sellin' crack to the kid. " I gotta get paid,"
Well hey, well that's the way it is

[Bridge]

[Talking:]
We gotta make a change...
It's time for us as a people to start makin' some changes.
Let's change the way we eat, let's change the way we live
and let's change the way we treat each other.
You see the old way wasn't working so it's on us to do
what we gotta do, to survive.

[3]
And still I see no changes can't a brother get a little peace
It's war on the streets & the war in the Middle East
Instead of war on poverty they got a war on drugs
so the police can bother me
And I ain't never did a crime I ain't have to do
But now I'm back with the facts givin' it back to you
Don't let 'em jack you up, back you up,
crack you up and pimp smack you up
You gotta learn to hold ya own
they get jealous when they see ya with ya mobile phone
But tell the cops they can't touch this
I don't trust this when they try to rush I bust this
That's the sound of my tool you say it ain't cool
my mama didn't raise no fool
And as long as I stay black I gotta stay strapped
& I never get to lay back
'Cause I always got to worry 'bout the pay backs
some punk that I roughed up way back
comin' back after all these years
rat-tat-tat-tat-tat that's the way it is uhh

[Bridge 'til fade:]
Some things will never change

It's an oligarchy, not a dictatorship. Once the Supreme Court ruled that money = free speech, only the very rich are heard in Washington.

The office or President is a figurehead position only.. it's the people behind the scenes that pull the actual strings, whether it be Obama, Bush, Clinton, Reagan, whomever...
As far as elite goes, all politics is elitist, but nothing was more elitist than the previous administration..

Those who control the purse strings, control the U.S.  The Chairman of the Federal Reserve has the most power of anyone in the U.S. including the President.

Of course it's elitist but a dictatorship, really? When the actors on SNL get thrown in jail for poking fun at the President or anyone else in political power, then we'll talk about dictatorship.

With all this talk about a salary cap in baseball I've been engaged in recently, I've got a great idea. How about a salary cap on those eligible to run for elected offices? I'm thinking... what would it be like if no one with a household income exceeding $100,000/year could run for office? THEN we would see some real change!

how can someone attend a church for 20 jyears and not hear hate speeches every time he went? Ask Bush, Carter, Reagan and others. look it up. They love Hagee who said about Pamela Anderson: The woman is “the Great Whore,” Mr. Hagee explains, and she is drinking “the blood of the Jewish people.” That’s because the Great Whore represents “the Roman Church,” which, in his view, has thirsted for Jewish blood throughout history, from the Crusades to the Holocaust. How about Falwel?
Didn't bush pass the Patriot act @ 3:05 am? I watched it done with the majority and minorty whips snatching people out of restrooms and said to be charged with Treason if they didn't comply.

Very well said. Can we all say "1913"? Those that don't know history is what? There's no difference between the dumocrats or the redummicans.

There are some great points and commentary above, but the above quote comes closest to my own perception of the current power structure / operation of our government.  More specifically though, I consider the U.S. to be more definitively a "corporate oligarchy" that thrives from a mass populous that believes what they are told and follow accordingly.  Such is manifested through the corporate mass media and telecommunications industry, whereupon theirs, and the interests of those who support their efforts are presented in a manner of fact to "guide" the population to a desired opinion.  One tactic that goes in-line with such an effort is keeping the more confrontational issues at the forefront of peoples attention.  By doing so, the interests that support the corporate oligarchy and political power bases can maneuver freely, and almost undetected by the vast majority of the populous and continue to thrive whilst those whom are focused upon the 'lesser' more confrontational issues become oblivious to changes that are more often than no going to adversely affect some of the hardest working people in the nation.

I'm going to close this diatribe with an Old Roman proverb:  "Keep them fed, keep them entertained, and no trouble will you reap" (pertaining to the non-ruling majority).

Let's re-visit what we were all taught in school, there are three branches of the government, they are the Administrative, The White House, the Legislative, The House of Representatives, and the Senate, and the Judiciary, the Supreme Court.
Why three.? Because no one form of government can operate without the other two, or, in other words, a system of checks and balances. The President cannot simply impose his will on the American citizens
, that is what a Dictator does. The President relies on policy yes, but his programs must be approved by Congress.
Congress cannot simply pass ant legislation it wants to without fear of Veto by the President, or having the Law stricken down by the Supreme Court.
And finally, the Supreme Court is appointed by the President, but must be confirmed by Congress, and they make no laws, they simply interpret the Constitution of the United States of America.
No other government in the world is as unique and representative of its citizens as is the Government of the United States of America.
We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect union, establish Justice, and ensure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution of the United States of America.
