Colorado Rockies 2010 Needs
It may be the offseason, but roster moves are already being made and the free agent sweepstakes will soon be in full swing. The Colorado Rockies are in an enviable position-- a mid-market team which has proven it can contend, with two playoff appearances in the past three seasons. Still, the ultimate goal remains as it is for every team: the franchise's first World Series Championship.

Rockies fans-- what do you think are the team's most pressing needs for 2010?

Excellent question... how many options can I vote for?

I like the starting rotation.   Even without Marquis, I am hoping Jeff Francis comes back strong and is able to pick up that spot in the rotation.   I also think it is time to give the full-time job to Eric Young Jr.   EY, Cargo, and Dex would be able to do a lot of things on the base paths.    If Manny Corpas comes back strong, he will be needed as a setup man especially if the Rockies lose Betancourt (who I really hope O'Dowd can find a way to resign).

That said, I have given this a lot of thought and was going to vote for trading Garrett Atkins - he is dead weight in Colorado and it would be nice to see him get a chance with another club, bu I question his trade value.  Therefore, and this is hard for me to say, I will go with the "Trade Brad Hawpe" option.   I've always liked Brad Hawpe and I still do.  I was actually surprised to learn that the Rockies were possibly looking to move him, but it makes sense.  Hawpe will draw a lot more in a trade than Atkins.  If the Rockies can get a strong right-handed bat as well as a middle reliever and/or prospects for Brad, I would be all for it.   The Rockies definitely need to address their weakness vs "lefties" and although I would hate to see Hawpe go, it may be necessary to move him.

I am really looking forward to this offseason.   The Rockies are no longer in "rebuild" mode - a tweak here and a tweak there and they should be right back in the thick of things in 2010!

And, of course, we know the only team that can guarantee getting him if they want to...

Well the Rockies already filled one need for 2010... and 2011 and 2012 as well, by rewarding Jim Tracy with a 3-year contract, less than an hour after he was named NL Manager of the Year in a landslide.

Tracy received all but one (29 of 30) first-place votes, and the abstainer apparently gave him the 2nd-place vote, while rewarding Joe Torre with his only 1st-place vote.

I don't think Toronto is going to trade within the division. It'd be bad enough to their fans if they traded Halladay, but if he were pitching for Boston or New York and faced the Jays several times a year, that would be too much.

Congrats to Jim Tracy!!!   Didn't really think there was any doubt he would win that award, but with the typical East Coast bias, you just never know...  Jim did an incredible job turning that team around after Clint Hurdle was fired - the real test is whether or not he can now keep the players' attention, especially if they experience any adversity in 2010.   I have no doubt that he will continue to do a great job as the players all seem to like to play for Mr. Tracy.   I just hope the Rockies can hit the floor running next Spring - digging out of those huge holes they seem to dig in the standings is really doing the "hard" way!

Well now Atkins has been non-tendered, which we all expected to happen. The era of Ian Stewart at the hot corner has officially begun. That creates the question of who will back up Todd Helton. I'd like to see them re-sign Giambi, but I doubt he'd want to stay if he could be an everyday DH for an AL team. Honestly, I think he's much more valuable coming off the bench at this point in his career. They want to lock down Street, Barmes, and Ianetta long-term, which is all well, I suppose. I really like Barmes for his scrappiness, but I can't stand watching him strike out a dozen times a week and hit .230. Hopefully he can cut down the swing and learn to exercise more patience. Hawpe needs to do the same. I wouldn't be surprised if Hawpe is still traded. He's a great guy but the Rox outfield is crowded, and they've already shown they want to keep Spilborghs along with the dynamic duo of young Dexter Fowler and CarGo. Hawpe might command a decent reliever or back-end rotation guy in trade. If there's one thing that has become even more evident in recent years, it's that you can never have enough good pitching. There's no such thing as too much.

Ha!   Good one.   You are right though... also a little worried about the Giants' pitching.   Could be a pretty interesting race in the NL West next summer!

That's for sure. Colorado's miserable 4-14 record against LA last year was definitely the biggest difference-maker in the division.

I don't see the improvement...  Edwin Jackson for Scherzer is at minimum a toss-up.    Jackson was in the All-Star game last year and had a great season, but faltered down the stretch.   I was upset at first, but I am actually looking forward to seeing Scherzer in a Tigers uniform.    The D-backs need a lot more help than Edwin Jackson and Ian Kennedy, especially with that lineup.    The NL West is going to be tough - this trade does nothing to push the D-Backs closer to the Dodgers, Giants, and Rockies.   Sorry.

(Edited by spartymon)
My point exactly... unless the D-Backs do something about their own lineup, they are really not going to scare anybody.   They have some young guys in that lineup, but as a team, do you realize they had a weaker hitting team last year than the Giants?   Not by much, but according to Yahoo, the Giants were ranked 25th in batting last year...  the D-Backs?   27th!!!   Pitching isn't everything, but it certainly puts a lot less pressure on the lineup...  that San Francisco pitching staff gives the Giants the capability to win a lot of low-scoring and close ball games.

A lot of things can happen in a long season and teams have been able to make huge improvements in the standings from one year to the next (and maybe even easier to fall from the top), but again, unless a bunch of the younger D-back players have "break-out" years, I just can not visualize them being a huge threat in the NL West in 2010.   They finished 22 games below .500... just getting to .500 would have to considered a huge accomplishment.

Regardless, I am really looking forward to the battle in the NL West next summer... all this talk about baseball already has me longing for Spring Training!

All the best and Happy Holidays!!!

The Rockies improve just by getting a year older. Colorado has a core of young players under age 25 (Carlos Gonzales, Dexter Fowler, Seth Smith, Ian Stewart, Ubaldo Jimenez, and of course Tulo)... and Chris Iannetta, Jorge De La Rosa, and a few others are just slightly older. As they mature together they will become a force to be reckoned with. History shows that most players peak and have their best seasons around ages 27-28.

You clearly have no respect for the National League. That's fine. The Phillies may repeat, or they may not. They are not so far ahead of the other 15 teams as you seem to think.

The fact is that the Phillies nearly never made it out of Colorado. They needed two 9th-inning come-from-behind (or tied) rallies to win that series. They're a great team, yes. But there's other great teams in the NL. You've got your Yankees blinders on again and apparently you're bigoted towards the Yankees' league as well. As for the World Series, the NL holds the advantage against all AL teams except the Yankees. And the Yankees won all those AL pennants between 1920-1978 because the AL was a WEAK LEAGUE. One day you'll see reality.

Exactly who are these powerful teams top to bottom in the American League? You have the Yankees, Red Sox, and Angels. Three teams out of 14. What teams out of the other 11 are truly great teams? The Tigers, Twins, Rangers? They're good, not great, and the remaining teams are either .500 teams or worse. The NL has two terrible teams, the Pirates and Nationals; the AL also has two terrible teams, the Royals and Indians. So again, where is your evidence that the Yankees' competition is so much stronger, outside of the fact that they have to play the Red Sox 18 times?

everyone has their biases based on wher they live and who they grew up liking and watching.. done?  good..
The Rockies have a good bit of talent, they just need individuals to keep improving.  It would be nice to see a big bat in the outfield. Brad Hawpe looked like that guy to start last season, but he was brutal down the stretch.  On offense, the keys are going to be the continued development of Stewart, Dex, CarGo, and Iannetta
As far as pitching goes, hopefully Francis comes back strong, which would be an upgrade over losing Marquis.  And guys like De La Rosa and Jimenez continue to get better and keep figuring how to "pitch".  A little bit of bullpen depth would be nice also.
At least there's reason to be optimistic for the coming year.. That's always nice

Really? Why? Just like the Pirates, they trade away any decent players they have. I'm amazed they still have Sizemore.

You're right as usual. The trend in town lately is for teams that aren't expected to do anything actually performing very well (Broncos, Avalanche); so it almost scares you to wonder what will happen to teams that are now expected to succeed (Nuggets, Rockies).

exactly.. so far the Nuggets, I would say, have been doing a good job meeting those expectations so far..  But remember what happened to the Rox in 2008?   That's why I remain cautiously optimistic and hopeful, not confident, for now about 2010

I agree-- however, I'd add that the current Rockies roster is much more solid than it was at the end of 2007.
