Do you think it is time to get rid of the Lions playing every Thanksgiving?
Even Detriot is having an issue selling the Thanksgiving day game (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3729033) Lions needed a 24 hour extension by the League to get avoid a black out last season.

I know it has been a long (not so rich all the time) tradition.  Is it time that we get some better games on Thanksgiving Day.

No way, it's part of my Thanksgiving tradition. Have folks over, cut the turkey, eat, get more to eat, attempt to eat desserts (one of each), sit in recliner, undo my britches, turn on the Lion's game, go to sleep, wake up, watch the Cowboys win, tell everyone goodbye, get more to eat, and then go to bed, but only after noodling on the computer a bit.

I do like tradition but I would love to see some better games on Thanksgiving Day. It does however make me spend more time with the family since at least the Lions game is generally not a great match up.  It is times like these that I miss Barry Sanders and Wayne Fontes or even Billy Sims.

Where's that NFL Network/NBC Flex-Schedule option when you need it?

Let Dallas and Detroit play each other. Then schedule two AFC teams to play in the other game...........Or even better.............As a Steelers fan, it would be nice to play the Cowboys every year on Thanksgiving. Now that would be a tradition!

What other time are the Lions gonna get on national TV?
NO-It is a tradition dont change it

This is the only day the Lions get the spotlight on national television...even if they look like their games should be broadcasted on Comedy Central.

No one was calling for the Lions to be off Thanksgiving when the Lions were a competetive team before Matt Millen was put in charge.
Millen is now gone...the Lions will be back.
Thanksgiving, and the Lions are a NFL tradition, and the Lions should ALWAYS PLAY AT HOME ON THANKSGIVING.

The Lions have been playing on Thanksgiving Day since before anyone on this site was born(1934) it used to be for many years just the Packers and it has been during good years and bad.  There were many years of multiple teams playing on that day and for a long time just the Cowboys and Lions, but thanks to the NFL Network which not everyone can get there is a 3rd game, which gives everyone a choice of who you would like to watch.  I say leave it because it is fine and teams are rotated in and you can usually see a good team play.

The Detroit Lions are one of the most useless teams in NFL history, Over the past 11 seasons they are an amazing W 49 - L 120 @ 28.9 Win%. I just shake my head writing these numbers down. Even the Cleveland Browns have been better since they were awarded their franchise back in 1999 with a record of W 55 - L 114 @ 32.5 Win%. Do I want to watch them play, how about, No! Do they deserve to play, No! The NFL should try something like a rematch of the two Superbowl teams, or  have rematches of the Division championship games. At least you have better odds of watching a half decent football game. The statement of "Tradition" or how old the franchise doesn't fly with me either. There are at least 4 organisations older than the Lions, Cardinals, Bears, Packers and Giants. Throw those 4 teams together and I'll watch any one of those games.

You can't make the game a flex game because alot of people make travel arrangements around going to games.  I do think they should let other teams play on that day though.  I don't care about the Lions or the Cowboys.

I would much rather they do away with the Cowboys...... I despise watching the Cowboys.
#16 | 1733 days ago

They are tired and I am tired of watching them!!!  At some point they will give us a better team to watch after getting stuffed on Thanksgiving.

Get rid of the Lions on Thanksgiving???   Absolutely not!!!   The Lions started the tradition of playing football on Thanksgiving - even if they stink, that game belongs to the Lions and the city of Detroit, even more so than the Cowboys in the 2nd game of the day.   The NFL has added a Thanksgiving night game which gives two other teams a chance to play on the holiday...  To be honest, I even wonder how many players outside of Detroit and Dallas actually want to play on Thanksgiving - they miss out on family time  (especially the road team) and with the short week of practice, a lot of those guys are probably still hurting from the previous game four days earlier.

Leave the Lions alone...   If you don't like them and you are on the West Coast, sleep in!  If you are on the East Coast, just plan your dinner when the Lions are on and then you won't have to worry about it!

The only problem with that is, that the lions and Cowboys dont play each other every year so we couldnt do that. Same thing with the Cowboys and Steelers. The NFL schedule is set up by record and rotating divisions each year..so they couldnt set somthing up like that.

Cowboys vs Steelers every year?  That would be to frustrating.  I can't expect them both to lose the same game...

There actually is room for two games that are not predetermined for every team in the NFL..................The Steelers vs Titans in week one was the first one. The second will be the last game of the season against the Dolphins. The Cowboys have the Seahawks and the Packers this year.

My comment was intended to heckle my Cowboy friends. Much like this Steelerette picture does...........

Not really. Each team Plays each division opponant twice (6). Then they play an entire division in each Conference (8). The other two games they play the teams who finished in the same spot in their division as they did the previous year. 1st plays 1st, 2nd plays 2nd and so on.

IE: Packers finished 3 in the division last year so this year they played the Bucs and the Cowboys with those two extra games.

So for the Steelers the Dolphins and the Titans Both Won their divisions last year and so did the Steelers that is why they played those two teams. So who you play is set the day after the season in the NFL. Only two games can flucuate Year to Year. It is a pretty good set up.

No I believe you are wrong,   6 games against your Div., 4 Conference games against another Divison, 4 games against Div of other conference, and the last two are games in your conf. against the teams that finished the same place you did, i.e.  1st place plays 1st place, 2nd plays, 2nd...etc.   That's why the Vikes play NYG and Panthers this year as the get Cards because they play the whole NFC West.

Sorry folks, I sound like a copy cat I didn't see uwgb44's comment before posting mine.

No way should the Lions be the team of the day. They need to do away with them. Don't even want to turn on the game because you already know who will loose. My family hopes they change this up so we can watch a serious game for a change.
