Even though i Respect all the Martial Artists but In my view BRUCE LEE was Best. I have read his Book "Tao of Jeet Kune Do". Bruce Lee was just Great. The way he taught in his book the way of living and the way to look at the Martial Arts, his philosophy and teaching is just Great. Also the movies of great BRUCE LEE, they are just amazing.  Well known faces of practitioners are many, but there are many more who are like the fruits behind the leaves in the tree of humanity.Bruce Lee was the best known face, Steven Seagal is also as good and well known as Chuck Norris and many named herein.

Self  defense as martial art is the oldest of techniques of Buddhist monks , Bruce Lee brought it to the knowledge of all with the films and books and thus gave another dimension to this science and art of living, the earliest exponent is the Buddhist monks, sangamitta and her brother who are siblings of Monarch Ashoka, who embraced Buddhism after winning the bloodiest war, renounced the crown to be the follower of Buddha.

this i snot a simple question.  the names presented are no doubt virtuoso martial artists, but the are practitioners most people have never heard of that have or have had more ability than the mass appeal ones noted.  my sifu, 'johnny' kwong ming lee is the most accomplished martial artist i am aware of, he is a 10th degree grandmaster in my jhong law horn, pua qua chang, and woo style tai chi.  there are others as well who are rediculously awesome practitioners...but i guess the question is who among the list is best...i would have to say bruce lee.

Bruce Lee's great contribution to us here in the West was his opening up of this secretive martial art of kung fu, which was one of his major arts and skills.  Before his time, the masters kept their teachings and techniques secret even to each other.  While I believe Bruce goes down as the greatest known martial arts master in the West, there are other great masters in the East where it all originated, and whose names we hardly know.  Bruce was extremely humble before them and openly acknowledged his debt to them, especially his own great teacher Yip Man.  We are very Hollywood bonded, and maybe we miss out on the less famous but equally dedicated and skilled masters who aren't interested in appearing on the big/small screens, but only in living their martial arts lives and passing on their knowledge to new generations.  Bruce is the great American martial arts icon, disdained by Hollywood and other producers for looking too Chinese, passed up for the Kung Fu TV series for that reason.  So he returned to his native China, where he also goes down as a great but not necessarily the greatest m. arts master and certainly a gifted director of his Chinese films.

That's Yip Man, not " Kip Man."  Also Bruce's contribution which propels him to supremacy is his seeking for truth in combat & his rejection of the phony mysticism associated with the traditional martial arts.

Are you able to excuse a typo? Thank you. It's not opinion that determines "supremacy"--supremacy is not a goal in martial arts. The phony mysticism sprang from Hollywood, not martial arts masters. Who's projecting anybody to supremacy? Certainly not the real experts, only the media-enslaved self-proclaimed pundits.

I guess you were replying to my post although you , in fact replied to you're own. Be that as it may;  If ANYONE has a single shred of scientific proof for the existence of Qui, Chi, or Ki I'd love to see it. I grew up in traditional martial arts & it took me years to free my mind of all the mind-numbing  manipulative mysticism with which I was indoctrinated.   "The truth will make you free ! "

John, You seem a bit confrontational with the martial arts scene.. Strange that you even write on this site. Your latest reply has nothing to do with the question above. Hope you solve your own problem, which is a deviation from the topic. Adios.

The reply was to the topic of " Qi " which you brought up, as you well know in the twin thread to this one.   " There's a deadly move that the highest masters know, called dimmuk.  In case of life-threatening need for self defense, dimmuk is a lethal shot of one's qi or energy straight to an enemy's  vital organ.  The attacker is permanently disabled or can even die without being touched at all. "  Your comment here is in the context of expressing the opinion that B.L. opened up the secretive world of Kung Fu which was inhabited by greater unknown masters & that his major contribution was in his theatrical endeavors. What I'm saying in contrast is that his main contribution was as a kind of martial arts Messiah .... freeing us from the religio-charlatans & mysticisms of an earlier age.  Caio.

So far he has a whopping 77% in this poll.  That's really amazing.  Thanks to Hollywood his style became well known and he shared all the techniques that traditionally were reserved to Chinese masters.  He was brave to do that.  Of the choices given in the quiz, I also voted for him.  They are mostly film stars, so Hollywood takes some well-earned credit for making them famous and their styles available to the public.  Wasn't Steve Seagal originally a dancer?  Like Ralph Macchio, who returned to dancing after the Karate Kid movies?  They learned martial arts moves for their movies.  I wonder if Seagal stayed with it, or also returned to dancing.  Good luck with your own choice.

"Wasn't Steve Seagal originally a dancer?" Where on earth do you get your "information" ???  Seagal was a legit aikido instructor ... even having his own dojo in the country of his arts origin. Not that aikido is the end all & be all of martial arts practicality, ... but still; He's no ballerina! You're not taking any consciousness expanding substances along with your Zen meditation are you?     LOL
