The Big Debate.
Big debate here. We are having a argument here with a relative because she says I am not a CHRISTIAN. I don't believe that you have to go to church every Sunday or I don't  raise my family according to her standards. I do believe in God and I think everyone worships him  in there own way. I pray and ask for forgiveness and for help guiding me. The question is= Do you think you are a Christian?

It is not up to humans to judge other people's hearts.  It is a matter between that person and God.  And yes, I am a Christian.

First and foremost my brethren, anyone that is wasting their time to make you feel as though you're not going to go to heaven and acts as though they are worried about your soul, ask a few questions. Will you pay my bills for me? Will you stop critising people to hide what you fear? What do you do Monday through Saturday? It's the same if I get a knock at the door telling me I am going to hell when I may be hungry at that same time. No hope has come to my door but they tell me they care for my soul? What happens all the other days of the week? Why do I not see you then? Why are the door only open on Sundays and maybe one day in the week? My door is always open to THOSE whom Jesus
#3 | 1248 days ago

came to save. Why is your door closed to those people? Fret not what others think, live in your heart and get closer to the almighty. Know thy self my friend. Fear the Lord not man. I am not a Christian, I believe in Christs ways and Christ was no CHRISTIAN. I DON'T NEED A GLORIFIED FASHION SHOW TO MAKE ME BELIEVE I WILL MAKE IT IN HEAVEN!

I know exactly what you are going through!  I don't go to church, but I am a born again Christian.  I was raised going to Church every time the doors opened, I went up until I moved back to my home town after my divorce.  The community I was born and raised in has a church that I joined and was baptised at as a child.  Everyone tells me "you need to get back in to church" or "Why don't you come to Church".  I feel like they are implying that just because I'm not going to church that I am doomed.  I know GOD and I know what is in my heart.  I can sit in my home and read the bible and pray! There is a church service on TV that I enjoy and watch it every Sunday.  My mother was sick for over half this year and I had NO help.  Not one person from this church called or stopped to see if there was anything they could help with and believe me I needed help with her!  I don't feel the need to get up and go sit with people and "fellowship" for a couple of hours on Sunday and then see them in town on Monday and they don't speak!   I can feel GOD in my heart and if he leads me to a church then I will go but as for me I will worship my Lord the way I choose!

I still call myself a Christian, despite never being a regular churchgoer since I finished confirmation classes at age 12. But I think a lot of people who call themselves Christians don't really know what the term means. It's not simply believing in God. Jews, Christians, and Muslims all believe in God, essentially the same God in fact, the God of Abraham. But going beyond that simple core belief, there are significant differences between these three related religions and even more so among all the different belief systems present in the world.

A Christian must believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and co-equal with God the Father and the Holy Spirit, and furthermore, that in His earthly incarnation was at once fully human and fully divine, and that his death was the only way humanity's sins could be redeemed, and his resurrection was the only way that death, which was the penalty for sin, could be ultimately conquered for all God's children.

That is the core belief. Of course, on top of believing in that, Christians are also supposed to conduct their lives after the model Jesus exhibited and taught in his time on earth.

That's just the facts. I'm not here to judge anyone and I don't make a practice of it in my daily life, which is one reason I don't attend church. So I don't really care if you are Christian or Muslim or Buddhist or if you want to live in a compound, drink Kool-Ade and lace up your sneakers when the comet comes. What you believe is up to you. But religions do have prescribed beliefs and you can't rightfully call yourself a "Christian" if you don't believe in the precepts above, no more so than you could call yourself a Muslim if you don't want to pray towards Mecca five times a day, or call yourself a Buddhist if you don't really believe in the cycles of karma and samsara.

Many Americans tend to treat religion like some kind of all-you-can-eat buffet; you have a little of this belief, and a little of that one, and you can mix and match how you choose, but that doesn't really work because if you do look at these belief systems strictly, much of them are mutually exclusive to each other.

The last point I'd say is that there's a huge difference between religion and faith and I believe much more in the latter. Religion is prescribed practice followed by ritual. You brush your teeth religiously. But you take it on faith that you're killing the gingivitis bacteria as you can't actually see that happening.

Going to church no more makes you a Christian than standing in a garage makes you a car.  I call myself Christian because i believe in Christ.  I have great faith but i am not religious.

Easy, read John 3:16.  If you believe that, you're a Christian...

Half the Christians that go to church every Sunday, Saturday (depending upon one's view of the seventh-day), or even Wednesday services will be the first in line for the Christian Hell--as they believe.

Those who achieve Heaven, or other location of their beliefs after death will be determined by their actions on a day to day basis during the course of their lives on earth (what I call Midgarðr).

In short, action talks and poo-poo walks.

yeah, but it's just because I was brought up that way. it's just a label for me, it has nothing to do with what i believe or don't believe. I think it matters more to other people.

I'll tag myself Christian, but I'm not religious about it. My faith is strong. I  believe there is a higher power. I pray. I give thanks. I count my blessings. I don't go to church.

It shouldn't matter how you think or worship God - the fact is that you do.  To fault someone for not being a certain 'religon' or particular sect is not of another man's right...believe however you feel makes it right by you.

(Edited by ms_hippie_queen)
i grew up methodist and even attended a chrysallis (faith walk) right before i went to college. i have always hated services and worship but loved the doing for others in things like mission trips, habitat for humanity, UM Army, etc. i think talking about jesus, god, and feeding 5000 with two loaves of bread is a waste of time and breath - and more importantly cuts into the first quarter of texans games.

i now work in the church i grew up in and once confused christian i am now a full blown agnostic. i'd rather brush my teeth with steel wool than sit for one more minute in the audience of another bloviating clergyman. i have always believed and always had faith but i also believe Einstein when he said "Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results." and for me that is what sitting in church is. week after week, one hour minimum singing the same hum-drum hymns, taking on the same gut-wrenching guilt trips with some ridiculous chant talking about how we turned our backs on the homeless, didn't love our neighbor, failed to witness, etc etc. to wrap up each weekly episode. witnessing isn't shoving bible knowledge down someone's throat. it's showing that your higher being works through you and actions speak an eff ton louder than words do:

From Instead of a Show by Jon Forman
give love to the ones who can’t love at all
give hope to the ones who got no hope at all
stand up for the ones who can’t stand up at all
instead of a show...

if we are giving ourselves religious label, I will take atheist..  People can believe whatever they want to or feel they need to, but I like the idea of knowing that I am in charge of my life, and the things I do or don't do and the decisions I make affect what will happen to me in the future..

I'm not a Christian, but I have very strong faith. That's what counts ... the pomp and circumstance is just that.

Going to church every Sunday doesn't make one a Christian, just like me going to a garage every week wouldn't make me a mechanic.
#30 | 1245 days ago

I'm an Atheist. Grew up a Lutheran, but was never a believer.

I do have what I just call 'common sense' and I don't think it's anything that makes me a "lesser" person because of it. I just simply am in control of my own being, I don't think I need to excuse my feelings or thoughts to another "being" that people don't really even know if it exists or not.

Faith is cool and I think those who have plenty of it are usually much stronger people, but just something that's not for me.
#31 | 1245 days ago

Well basically if you believe in Christ your a Christian....... Catholics are Christians , Lutherans are Cristians, ..etc. etc...... they all just worship and translate individually but, its all Christianity........ and its as simple as "I BELIEVE"  .......

Religion gets too personal and hits deep into the heart and soul of each individual..

Its a freedom that we enjoy and one that built this country!! so believe how you believe and remember how lucky we are in this country!!!

On, my mind is thinking and using its intellect to ponder, who is this  "  I  " ?
Is this " I " the body in which my mind is found its home, is this "I " the mind that which is part of the "soul", this  "I " if it is the body, when age or any event snatches away the life, soul departing, this " I " is gone to decay in the ashes to ashes, sands to sands of time, then who is this " I ".
The material body has a soul, as a child the body and soul gather the knowledge and experiences of living life, as soul active part of it is "mind" learns to behave with the body to be socially responsible, to lead a life, without tramping the hurt on others in the life, in society.
All faiths are like light houses in the voyage of life, showing the way of life, to one goal, to reach sublime presence of absolute truth, the Super Soul, the GOD, to the soul of each of us individual bodies, with soul. All faiths talk of good ways of life, the presence of place of worship is a place to focus on good of life, to remind oneself of good facts of life, to be good in life, to be filled with love, to be compassionate, to be humane .
Mind being fickle, is difficult to control the mind for the body with the soul, and faith gives ways to be good at control of our own minds, to be humane instead of being just animals in community with only animal insticnts to suvive at any cost, even at the cost of good morals and ethics, which are embedded in soul, mind.
Organised faiths are religions, with rituals to enforce the body and mind to fall in line with those who organise the faith for their survival, cajole, command and convince to attend the rituals of the faith so organised, with the fear factor, that if you are not with us, you will not get haven, you will rot in hell.! What mind and intellect can not understand yet, is belief, but hope is one belief that makes us live good life,
Christmas is the festival of HOPE to humanity, to enlighten us that a baby born in abject poverty, grew to be noble, show the way of good life, to be humane, with love and compassionate, attain divinity by nobilty of good acts and words, that is Jesus Christ for me, not GOD, but who hoped that humans will understand that they are , can be noble in their acts and deeds, thus be noble, divine
I am a ordinary human, believe in humanity, the good of humanity is GOD to me, my faith is in me, in humanity, to be good in life, not to hurt anyone life, in body, mind and soul. Being human, I do make mistakes, sins, for which, I learn to atone, not to make them again, life goes on, as intellect undersatand the mind is part fthe soul, conscious mind responds to material life with intellect sub-conscious mind corrects the mistakes in responding to life, to be humane, soul absorbs the good and all thoughts that are good, to be noble, thus nearer to divinity of humanity.
Mind absorbs good of all the faiths as they are words of wisdom, to be verified and accepted, so that only truth is accepted without the layers of untruth such as so and so is the only saviour.! Each of us can save ourselves from the hell, as the actions which hurt other lives are hell for those who suffer because of these actions.Hell and haven is HERE on earth as we make it haven or hell with our words and actions.Love and regards,
