Baseball Hall of Fame Re-Do: Aaron-Boggs
The Hall of Fame debate continues in earnest after the election of Andre Dawson. But what if there was a re-do, in which every player currently in the Hall of Fame had to reevaluated with the same 75% barrier as the current system allows. What if it was just a one-shot "yes/no" question, as some think the voting should be?  Some also think there should be less players in the Hall. These series of polls will allow them to give their say on who they'd take out.

In this series of polls, every player that was elected by either the writers or the Veterans Committee will be reevaluated. Like the current process, 75% of the vote is required to stay in the Hall. This vote will not include managers, umpires, executives, or Negro League players (the latter because I honestly doubt many of us could properly judge those players due to their circumstances, I know I couldn't). Who would the Q keep in the Hall? Who would they leave out? Only one way to find out.

Note: For each player, I included their year inducted and how, BBWAA for elected by the writers, and VC for elected by the Veterans Committee.

Boggs was the only "No" that I felt that should have never been there in the first place - I don't think he belongs. My other "No"s are simply ones that I didn't have enough knowledge of to have an informed opinion to give them such lofty status.

Or you could go to baseball-reference.com and look it up yourself. I only have so much time, and I want to get all the polls out this weekend. Looking these guys up can be time-consuming, but I'd like to think people would do it.

A player like Beckley is really hard to cast a vote on.  He played so very long ago.  I don't consider myself that qualified to decide.  I looked at his numbers and made the choice because I had to cast a vote on everyone to get counted.  But that one was really an uninformed vote.

I heard Cap Anson was an officer in the KKK - that alone should get his butt kicked-out of the Hall!!!

I get it - you are trying to start conversation - Boggs not in the Hall?!?!? 12 All- Star games, 7 Silver Sluggers, 2 Golden Gloves, 3010 hits, .328 lifetime average (seasons of .349,.361,.325,.368,.357.,363,.366,.330,.303,.332 and .342)... Please tell me you were joking - lol

No, actually I wasn't joking. Yes, 3000 hits is impressive, but not overwhelming. As for Cap Anson, you would have to kick out Ty Cobb for his racist views, too. Good luck with that! For that matter, you would have to expel anyone pre-1947 because all of Major League Baseball was a farce, not allowing many of the best players of all-time to play in their leagues.

OK, who are the 11% who voted "no" for Hank Aaron.? From now on, please stop doing anything on the Q related to baseball before you start complaining about  Babe Ruth and Cy Young not belonging in the HOF.

You sure you don't want to re-vote on Ted Williams? He doesn't make it by your standards-- after all, he had a miserable .200 postseason average, and that's what REALLY counts, right?

I'd really like to participate, but there's no way I have the time to research the numbers. Maybe if we did this in summer. Great idea though!

In an attempt to stimulate discussion, I'll try to explain all my choices.

Aaron, Alexander, Banks, Bench, Berra, Boggs: All obvious choices.

Anson (yes): Major league ass, but as important as anyone on the field during the beginnings of pro baseball.

Aparicio (yes): He's in for his defense, which by all account was amazing. Not much of a hitter, but I still learn towards yes. If he wasn't a shortstop, I probably would field differently.

Appling (yes): Another fine defensive shortstop, but with a much better bat (career OBP of .399)

Ashburn (yes): Not a lot of power, but a fantastic leadoff hitter for over a decade.

Averill (yes): On the surface I would've said no, but then I looked and saw a career 133 OPS+ in the 30s.

Baker (yes): Also known as Home Run Baker (and I'm thinking I did him no favors by using his given name). Was the top home run hitter in the deadball era.

Bancroft (no): Not even an average career hitter. Has players like Ozzie Guillen in his most similiar player comps.

Beckley (yes): A remarkably consistent hitter and first basemen in a 20 year career. It doesn't sound that impressive, but this was in the 19th century and turn of the century. That kind of career was very rare in that time.

Bender (no): Closer than I thought, but Bender was only a top pitcher for four seasons. A 2.46 career ERA is good, but was only a 112 ERA+ due to it being the deadball era.
