Baseball Hall of Fame Re-Do: Mathews-Newhouser
The Hall of Fame debate continues in earnest after the election of Andre Dawson. But what if there was a re-do, in which every player currently in the Hall of Fame had to reevaluated with the same 75% barrier as the current system allows. What if it was just a one-shot "yes/no" question, as some think the voting should be?  Some also think there should be less players in the Hall. These series of polls will allow them to give their say on who they'd take out.

In this series of polls, every player that was elected by either the writers or the Veterans Committee will be reevaluated. Like the current process, 75% of the vote is required to stay in the Hall. This vote will not include managers, umpires, executives, or Negro League players (the latter because I honestly doubt many of us could properly judge those players due to their circumstances, I know I couldn't). Who would the Q keep in the Hall? Who would they leave out? Only one way to find out.

Note: For each player, I included their year inducted and how, BBWAA for elected by the writers, and VC for elected by the Veterans Committee.

Newhauser was a Particuarlly tough call.

If anyone says "no" to #3...  They need to turn in their baseball fan card and walk a way in shame.

The obvious picks (to me): Mathews, Mathewson, Mays, Molitor, Morgan, Murray, Musial. Couple of other near obvious picks, but I want to look it up just to make sure.

Mazeroski (no): Amazing defender? Absolutely. Great moment with the homer in the 1960 WS? Yes. A career .299 OBP? Ouch.

McCarthy (no): 102 career OPS+ in the 19th century. Bill James calls him the worst player in the Hall.

McCovey (yes): This was a near-obvious pick that became obvious once I looked.

McGinnity (yes): Average 344 innings a season. Led league in wins 5 times. 120 career ERA+

McPhee (yes): Considered the best defensive second baseman of his time (1880s and 1890s). Had his moments as a hitter, OPS hampered by lack of power.

Medwick (yes): Looking back, the NL's last Triple Crown winner was an obvious choice.

Mize (yes): Hit the crap out of the ball, missed 3 years due to WWII, then went back to hitting the crap out of the ball. Retired in 1953. How did it take almost 30 years to get him in?

Newhouser (no): It's close, but of his seven real good years, two came during the War, and in fact were his best ones.
