Cult Classics
On Friday my wife updated her Facebook status to "Good, bad, I'm the one with the gun." I and several of her friends knew instantly that this was a reference to the classic film Army of Darkness and soon her wall was filled with quotes from the movie. OK, AoD isn't Casablanca, Citizen Kane, Gone with the Wind or The Godfather, but it's a "cult classic," beloved by legions of fans who consider it one of their favorite movies, including me. When it came out in the theater, I saw it twice in less than 72 hours.

AoD was actually the final installment of the Evil Dead trilogy (after The Evil Dead and Evil Dead 2). The first two films were the epitome of low-budget, campy, cheesy 1980s horror-comedies. AoD (1992) actually had a bit more budget and higher production values, but still looks cheesetastic now in the CGI age. Director Sam Raimi, who had by that point enjoyed moderate success with Darkman, of course went on to become rich directing the three (to date) Spiderman movies-- all of which feature a cameo by ED/AoD star, Bruce Campbell. Campbell is Army of Darkness, a B-movie comic-action star who quips one-liners to put Schwarznegger to shame.

So... what movie is your favorite "cult classic"?

"Slither" was f**king HYSTERICAL!

I'm into horror cult classics, personally.  Like the ORIGINAL "Black Christmas" (scared the hell outta me), which is my favorite that I can think of, off-hand.

it was especially good since my friends and i got drunk while watching at the theater. but i can top that. My bloody valentine 3D was super terrible and we were super drunk and despite the fact that we were in the wrong and we couldnt stop talking or laughing, i thought i was gonna have to slap a b*tch! good times.

No way, Kenne ... that was from the lame-ass (but funny/good in its own odd way) remake.
The original was way better (and had Margot Kidder in it as a big ol' ho-bag lush    does it get any cooler than that?).

A few of my favorite Cult Classics-
Eraserhead: Saw it when I was 13 it changed my life.  Suddenly I realized that the mind was the ultimate video game.

Repoman: Amazing soundtrack, the best work of Emilio's  career and the great Harry Dean Stanton.

Pink Flamingos/Polyester and Female Trouble- At 14 these all completed warping my fragile little mind.

Emmanuelle was not quite porn but that and Young Lady Chatterly made many of us offer to get a part-time job to make sure we could afford Cinemax.

In the Realm of the Senses and Devil in the Flesh both straddled the porn/art film line but had enough foreign pretension to be cult films.

Myra Breckenridge is one of the strangest films ever, of all times, anywhere, trust me.

Spike of Bensonhurst- Former Warhol acolyte Paul Morrissey tried to make a 'normal' movie this was as close to normal as he could do.

Quilombo and Xica by Carlos Digues are to of my favorite foreign films and cult movies.  And my other foreign favorites:

Y Tu Mama Tambien.  If you like your comedy uncomfortable and your friendship lines blurred you'll love this.

Takeshi "Beat" Kitano is essentially Japan's Harvey Keitel and Boiling Point is one of his most striking performances.

Back in the USA- Blood Simple- The Cohens would make many more well-known movies but their 1st remains a favorite of mine, tight film noir done right.

Starship Troopers- A darkly tongue-in-cheek send up of 100 other climactic battle in space films, Verhoeven at his sharpest.

Videodrome and Crash 2 movies that will mess with you that Cronenberg has issues and I love to watch him grapple with them.

Pow Wow Highway- There are thousands of movies about Native Americans, but only a handful are made by them, this is not just a cult movie but a great one and an underrated one.  This and Smoke Signals are worth seeing.

Sweet Sweetback's Bada$$ Song  Is not merely a Blaxplotation flick though it is often classified as such, it was a 1st on so many levels, it helped create Earth, Wind and Fire, was the one of the 1st independently made features to gross 7 figures but it is a mess and to say warts and all is to slight warts, however it is a powerful if wildly uneven historical document.

Black Dynamite Like CB4, Fear of  a Black Hat and Don't Be a Menace to Society While Drinking Gin and Juice in the Hood, is a spoof but more lovingly and carefully crafted than the others.  Michael-Jai White is pitch perfect in the title role and has the build, martial arts prowess and knowledge of the genre that makes Black Dynamite click it might be too early to call it a Cult Classic but it will take it's rightful place soon.

Yes.  I actually almost called her Lois Lane in my post, but I figured some douche would be like "Umm, you mean Margot Kidder!" because they wouldn't get the joke.
I just tried to alleviate another public Q-b*tchslap, in case I ever decide to run for office.

Television. Television is the explanation for this - you see this in bad television. Little assault guys creeping through the vents, coming in through the ceiling - that James Bond sh** never happens in real life! Professionals don't do that!

ElevenBravo-- now THAT is a detailed comment.

A lot of my own faves and some I've never heard of here... I love educational polls.

I know when I was in school kids talked about watching Faces of Death and I always wondered if it really existed. I've still never seen it-- and I still don't know how much of it is legit. Of course, these days you can easily see snuff pix on the Web.

I saw The Big Lebowski when it was out in theaters and didn't really "get" it-- but I was not under any influence.

The South Park movie was OMG hysterical. Hard to believe that was 10 years ago.
