ArenaBowl XXI Mini-Preview & Live Game Thread

ArenaBowl XXI Mini-Preview & Live Game Thread PhotoAfter 16 regular season games, plus the playoffs, we are finally down to the final two! The San Jose Sabercats will take on the Columbus Destroyers in ArenaBowl XXI today in New Orleans.

On paper, this matchup looks lopsided. At the same time, Columbus' last 2 games looked the same way and they won them both. Despite finishing the regular season with a 7-9 record, the Destroyers have made it to the big game. They are undoubtedly taking inspiration from the Chicago Rush, who won it all last year despite having an identical 7-9 regular season record.

San Jose comes into this game as the clear favorite. They have won 12 straight games, including last week's semifinal matchup against Chicago. They have the experience, led by Mark Grieb, who has won 2 ArenaBowl championships with San Jose.

Everything says that San Jose should win this game, but given Chicago's performance last year, and given the fact that Columbus has already taken down 2 heavily favored teams in the playoffs, anything can happen. The neutral-site crowd in New Orleans will most likely be behind them since they are the underdog, so if they can get out front early, they just might pull it off. Lucky for Columbus, this game isn't being played on paper and they have every chance of winning.

Join us in the thread below for comments on all of the ArenaBowl action. The game is live on ABC at 3pm Eastern (12pm Pacific).

I like how currently 61% picked San Jose in Question #1 but San Jose only has 56% in question #2.  Classic...

We'll you figure it isn't a dumb idea.  If Columbus does somehow pull off the victory putting down a margin will earn you more points.

I never said it was a dumb idea.  (although, I'm not sure that picking the winner should be worth fewer points than picking the margin of victory).

Personally, I'm not going to contradict myself after two picks.

I wasn't saying you said it was a dumb idea...I was just implying it wasn't completely stupid.  Yeah I didn't contradict my picks either.

I love that the NASCAR race is on ESPN, and this is on ABC today. It's hilarious given all the NASCAR-pimping that's been happening.

I may be around off an on.  I don't have a whole lot of cpu access, but I'll probably be watching the game along with Cubs/Reds.

This game is really a freakshow. Since it is a neutral site, it seems all the costume-wearing diehard fans from each team are present, wearing their team's gear. It's like some bizarre cosplay convention.

Columbus goes for it on 4th and goal and gets the TD. Big play there.

14-14 now.

27-14 San Jose at the half. Columbus is not out of it, but they did not look good in that 2nd quarter.

I don't know what it is. I love football, more than any spot, but I just can't take Arena seriously.

This player tracking could have potential somehow, but you've got to be pretty stupid to not be able to follow a receiver running a simple route.

It's much, much better in person. Go to a Rush game sometime next season if you've never been to one.

In all honesty, it can be pretty boring on TV sometimes, especially with commercial breaks after every score.

Don't bring little kids to sit in the front row if they can't handle being hit by a player or the ball.

That would ruin the game. Part of the appeal is that the fans can catch balls and players sometimes get hit over the side boards.
