How do you choose between your lover and your child(ren)?
Watching Dr. Phil.  This segment is on a lady who is dating a man who is 18 years younger than her.  They are perfectly happy in their relationship.  Problem is, her son is only four years older than her "cub."  The relationship with the younger man is threatening her relationship with her son.  What do you do?

Honestly I don't. My kids come first always. I wouldn't risk my relationship with them for anyone. Anyone that I am with knows up front that my kids will come first. My daughters are pretty mature about me dating even dating someone younger which I have, they don't have anything against age differences, its mostly the way that person treats me.

That's kinda weird actually. I don't think I would have been down with it either.

Cougar! That would be hard.  If her son is grown and has a life of his own then he would have to adjust.  However, if he is stilling young enough (under 18) I would choose my child.  The son should think about what makes his mother happy.  Even though I think 18 years younger is too young for any woman to date.

Well if her son is 4 years older than her lover, that means her son is an adult and should be acting as such.  Yeah, it would be weird to have a parent dating someone younger than you, but seriously ... it's really not so much your business, especially when you're dealing with grown adults (mother, son, and new lover).
Eventually, her son will have a life of his own, potentially a husband/wife/partner of his own and children.  His mother deserves to be happy and to have someone to spend her life with, too.

It seems like all parties are grown up, so I'm with Janet on this one.  The son needs to grow up a little bit.  Unless he know that his mother is being mistreated in some way, he's going to have to respect his mother's wishes on this one.

Before I would step in and tell my mom I had a problem with her dating someone 18 years old younger than her, I would check to see if the guy had a hot looking sister...

When my X husband and i were married we moved 13 times in 10 years, and i am not meaning just across town...I latter found out the truth about all of those moves. My x has been remarried for the past  8years now and he and his wife have moved at least 6 times. But this is where it get's funny..While he can't stand still she decided to move back home to Nebraska and he has moved close to the Utah Border. The point i am trying to get at is this...I HAVE  and ALWAYS  will choose my children over any man. Any good mother would do the same. I have three little blessings that i call my little people and they are my gift from God ...

Love should mean not having to make that choice, maybe some great communication, explaining some understanding from all involved. Its natural for a kid of that age to be upset, its not fair for a mum /dad to have to choose. Life isnt always fair and sometimes we have to do the best for another for what ever reason. What are the long term ramifications of the whole thing.

If I can pick and choose his girlfriends, then he can be in my business like that. Otherwise, he needs to stay out of my bedroom.
Then just to torture him, I'd go around singing Bill Withers' 'use me up'http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ROGOHNSEBs

Dr Phil is the new Jerry Springer? I`d LOVE to see a tag team match, Phil and the b**ch Oprah against Springer and Leno. The winner gets "The Tonight Show"

To begin with the mom shouldn't have gotten into this relationship.  There is just too big an age difference and we do have choices.  Children under 20 should always come first.  After that  it is up to the parent who they are with, but the parent needs to show some responsibilty and dating someone 18 yrs younger is not doing it.   Just my thoughts.

For Stifler's mom pic at the top.

And I agree with Janet - since all three parties are adults, the mother and lover can make that decision on their own, and the son should respect that and not make it a strain between him and his mother.

I would be happy that I was almost done raising my kid. I doubt I would want to raise another one... mute point.

now i would say if  it was a child, then the child comes first, but if its a grown adult child, screw it, have fun

I happen to like Dr. Phil.  It's not necessary to insult anyone for their preferences or imply that i'm too lazy to get up to change the channel if I so desire.

I'm sorry if I came off as rude. I'm on a blunt streak, and I've been saying what I mean and meaning what I say with not much regard for tact.

I think dat no mother should leave her children for someone else...coz when a woman has children it's no longer only about her..
